Jaroslav Halak would be the No. 1 goalie with several NHL teams and with Carey Price the present and future in Montreal, it is time the Canadiens traded Halak to fill a need before other goalies hit the market, such as Kari Lehtonen of the Atlanta Thrashers.

Philadelphia and Detroit would seem to be places where Halak would be a good fit, although the time has come for the Red Wings to find out what Jimmy Howard is. But with all the injuries they've had this season and a struggle to score goals, goaltending will end up being the difference between making or missing the playoffs for Mike Babcock's contingent.

Unless Montreal received a goalie back in return, Curtis Sanford would be a competent backup to Price which would elevate Desjardins to the No. 1 job in Hamilton.

there have been rumors since mid october that mtl wanted to move halak or sanford. it all comes down to what the best deal is. halak would no doubt bring in more, but it seems sanford is expendable as well.

regardless, this would move cedrick to #1 in hamilton. and move mayer up to hamilton as well. however, mayer is not ready for the ahl yet. personally i think they'll sit tight this year since next year the habs have 2 prospects that will be coming out of juniors and thatr gives them a lot more depth and depth means options. that being said, if the right offer comes along, either sanford or halak are expendable.

Nobody would give up anything for Curtis Sanford because he's not going to upgrade a team's goaltending at the NHL level. He's a solid insurance policy to have as the No. 3 goalie in your organization, someone that could be a backup that plays little in the NHL if necessary.

It would be very interesting to really know how the Canadiens brain trust regards Cedrick.

They know he can win at every level. They couldn't ask for any better statistical performance this year. Last season his numbers were almost a mirror image of Marc Denis'.

I don't follow the Canadiens closely. Is there reason for them to shake up their goaltending tandem? I always understood Price to be the goalie of the next decade and Halak to be a very capable player in his own right. What incentive would they have to trade Halak? Is he a salary cap burden or would it be to ramp up their offense?

Most teams prefer to have two quality goalies on their roster. Montreal has that and any trade of Halak which doesn't include a goalie in return couldn't be taken as anything but a positive for Desjardins-unless I'm misreading something.

Halak's contract is up this year and will be an RFA, and he would get offers from other teams for starter level salary that Montreal couldnt afford to match since he is just the backup here. Sanford proved in Vancouver he is capable as a backup/spot start. I would love to see Ced the #1 goalie in Hamilton and get 45-50 starts

i agree that halak is the guy to move, but right now mtl doesn't have a lot of depth between the pipes. a deal that doesn't involve a minor league goalie, makes them extremely thin.

given that halak will be a RFA at the end of the season season means that mtl would most likely want to move him rather than match an offer or get nothing in return.

Thanks.

I wasn't aware of Halak's contract status.

One of the things I have found that I like the most about following minor league hockey is the (almost) complete lack of focus upon contracts and the like. The game is front and center instead of the money.

I thought it was the beer prices at the minor pro level you liked the most.
