 Cyclones Win In 3-2 Shootout at Trenton

TRENTON, New Jersey - The Cincinnati Cyclones got a goal in the sixth round of the shootout from Hans Benson to defeat the Trenton Devils, 3-2, on Thursday night. The win launched the Cyclones into sole possession of second place in the North Division of the American Conference.

The Cyclones opened the scoring at 6:26 of the first period when Barret Ehgoetz picked up his ninth goal of the season from Chris Morehouse and Hans Benson. It is the second straight game that Ehgoetz scored the first goal of the game, the first point for Morehouse in a Cincinnati uniform and the third straight game with a point for Benson. On the first power play of the night, Cincinnati extended the lead to 2-0 when defenseman Jason Jozsa delivered his second goal of the season with Mike McLean and Dwayne Zinger adding the assists. Trenton cut the deficit in half when Jack Combs picked up his second of the campaign from Jeff Prough and Chris Murray at 16:13. The shots on goal favored Trenton, 16-11, in the opening term.

Trenton scored the lone goal of the second period, a power play tally at 15:01. Rookie defenseman Justin Pender picked up his third goal from Brett Wilson and Chris Poli. The Devils again outshot the Cyclones, 11-10, in the frame.

There was no scoring in the third period, but Trenton had the best opportunity of the stanzahaving a five on three power play for 1:01 near the midway mark. The Devils outshot the Cyclones, 8-6.

Neither team was able to score in overtime with Cincinnati outshooting the Devils, 3-2, in the bonus frame. For the game, Trenton outshot the Cyclones, 37-31. The contest moved into the shootout phase.

In the shootout, Dustin Sproat and Hans Benson (sixth round) scored to seal the win for the Cyclones, ending their two game losing streak.

Jeremy Smith picked up the victory, stopping a season high 35 shotsimproving his record to 7-5-1. Smith prevented five of the six Trenton shooters to score in the shootout. Gerald Coleman took the shootout loss, turning away 28 shotsdropping to 5-5-4.

Cincinnati is now 15-10-1, while Trenton is 9-13-5. The middle contest of the three game set in Trenton takes place on Saturday at 7pm. The teams also play on Sunday at 4pm. Those games will be carried on the internet at: www.cycloneshockey.com.
