Desharnias has been what Montreal thought he'd be -- a guy that would fill a roster spot for its AHL team in Hamilton.

Desharnais didn't fit into any of the 30 National Hockey League team's parameters or they would have drafted him.

So did many others who went on to play one game or less in the NHL.
quote: Originally posted by hrc666 He performed admirably in his first AHL season and has really stepped it up a notch this season.
No matter how much he steps it up he's still 5-foot-6 and an average skater. Watch clips of the few shifts he had in his NHL debut; he struggled to keep up with the play.

An NHL team signing an unsigned draft pick from another team or an undrafted free agent age 23 and under to their first NHL contract must sign the player to a two-year contract. The rules did not permit Montreal to sign him to anything less, or anything more. A drafted player signing their first NHL contract with the team that drafted them is signed to a three-year entry-level contract.

A lot of first, second and third-year pros look good early in training camp when they're playing against a team's recent draft picks that are 18-19 years old and are going to be spending the season in the OHL, WHL and QMJHL and other first, second and third-year pros, but then the vets begin to play more and guys like Desharnais go from being impressive to ordinary.

He might be a great battler for the puck and have great vision on the ice, but he's not going to play in the National Hockey League. He needs to have more than that going for him to get there.
I could see Montreal calling him up if they wanted to cut down on their travel bill since he fits into the overhead compartment of most planes. |
