TRENTON, New Jersey - The Cincinnati Cyclones received their Christmas gift a little early this season following a 2-0 win over the Trenton Devils on Sunday afternoon. The club moves into a tie with Kalamazoo for the North Division lead. Rookie goaltender Robert Mayer stopped a career-high 34 shots for his first professional shutout. Mark Van Guilder had a goal and an assist to pace the attack.
Cincinnati and Kalamazoo each have 35 points to lead the North Division, while Toledo is in third place with 34 points. Wheeling is fourth in the division with 28 points.
There was no scoring in the first period, but Trenton had the better opportunities. The Devils outshot the Cyclones, 13-7, and had two power play chances to Cincinnati's one.
The Cyclones scored the first goal at 7:53, when Dwayne Zinger collected his third goal of the season from Mark Van Guilder and Dustin Sproat. The score came one second after a Cincinnati power play had expired. It was the 20th time in 28 games this season that the Cyclones scored the first goal of the game and the ninth time in the last ten contests that this has occurred. For the third straight game on the road trip, Cincinnati opened a 2-0 lead when Maxime Lacroix lit the lamp for the first time in a Cyclones uniform as Barret Ehgoetz and Van Guilder had the assists on the power play goal at 12:39. Cincinnati took advantage of its chances in the frame--outshooting Trenton, 18-8, and connecting on one of four man-advantage chances while the Devils came up empty in their two chances.
There was no scoring again in the third period, as Trenton outshot Cincinnati, 13-7. For the game the Devils held the upper hand on shots, 34-32. The Cyclones were one for six on the power play for the afternoon while Trenton was zero for five.
Robert Mayer improves to 7-5 after the 34 stop blanking. Gerald Coleman drops to 5-6-4 after eliminating 30 shots. Mayer rebounded from his performance on Tuesday when he surrendered three goals in 16 minutes and was pulled in the 5-2 loss to Toledo.
Cincinnati is now 17-10-1, while Trenton is 9-14-6. The Cyclones return to U.S. Bank Arena on Saturday, December 26 against Toledo at 7:30pm. Its is another 'Kids Eat Free' promotion where patrons bringing a canned food item are given a voucher for a kids meal. Canned food items will be donated to the Freestore Foodbank.
Tickets for the 2009-10 Cincinnati Cyclones season are now on sale. The Cyclones Sales Department can be reached at 513-421-PUCK, extension 3. Selected Friday night games are carried on 1530-AM Homer, while all 72 regular season games can be heard on the club's website at: www.cycloneshockey.com. The next game on 1530 Homer will come Friday, January 8 when the Cyclones travel to Wheeling at 7:30pm.

Mayer (if one forgets about 18 minutes of Tuesday's game) has given up 5 goals in his last 4 games.
The team seems to be really coming around. Hopefully, Kilpatrick's return will kick the offense into a really high gear.
If the goaltending continues to improve, then this team can be counted in the mix of contenders for the Kelly Cup. |

i agree spot on with the goaltending. we have seen what both of the youngsters are capable of, unfortunately we've also seen the results when there are break downs in front of them. the goalies are continuing to mature with their games but the defense needs to play consistently solid in front of them to really stand a chance.
the offense misses killer for sure, but the biggest gun we need back is mark voakes. killer logged 0g-4a-4pts in 6 games. voakes cranked out 3g-2a-5pts in 4 games. voakes has shown the finishing touch the team has lacked at times this season. we all know what killer brings to the table but i haven't seen it out of him so far. perhaps if he gets back into the line up with van guilder, those two can recreate the chemistry they had last year. |

| I for one am very happy for Mayer, I think he has finally come around and has become comfortable with the pro game. Hopefully this week will get everyone rejuvinated, healthy and ready to go for the most important stretch January to April |

I'm hoping to see a Kilpatrick of pre-injury form. He gutted his way to a point per game in the playoffs last season, but wasn't the same player that he had been prior to getting injured in his brief stint with Houston in the AHL.
If he comes back 100% physically, then he can dominate at this level.
Voakes looked good as well. I'm just a lot more familiar with Kilpatrick.
If I'm not mistaken, the Cyclones are second or third in the league in goals allowed per game. We're outchancing opponents significantly, and if the "finishing" improves and the goalies continue their improvement, then it's hard not to put this team in the mix for the highest honor. |

I don't know what we are doing, travelling to Kalamazoo in the middle of lake-effect snow season, but we will be up there for the game on the 27th and to look around at my old alma mater.
Should be a great matchup as both teams battle for first place! Wish the New Years Eve game was on the 28th. |
