KALAMAZOO, Michigan - Cincinnati Cyclones Head Coach Chuck Weber does not look like Mel Gibson, but his club's 'Road Warrior' mentality paid dividends with its sixth straight win away from U.S. Bank Arena, 3-1, at Kalamazoo on Thursday night. The victory propelled the club into first place in the North Division. Scott Reynolds, Matt Pierce and Barret Ehgoetz had the goals for the winners while Robert Mayer stopped 25 shots.
The Cyclones scored the only goal of the opening frame when Scott Reynolds netted his 13th score of the season at 15:06. It was Reynolds' eighth goal of the season against Kalamazoo. The play started just inside the Cincinnati blueline when defenseman Brock Sheahan fired a puck cross ice to forward Chris Morehouse at the Wings blueline and headed up the right wing side. Morehouse worked along the end wall and flipped a puck in front of the net that Reynolds re-directed past Kalamazoo goaltender Ryan Nie. The Wings outshot Cincinnati, 11-9, in the opening frame and had three power play chances to the Cyclones two.
There was no scoring in the second period, but each team had chances. Kalamazoo was offered two power play chances, but was unable to convert. Cincinnati was unable to convert any of its three chances with the man-advantage in the periodincluding a 33 second five-on-three opportunity. The Cyclones outshot Kalamazoo, 11-7, in the period.
The game winning goal came from Matt Pierce at 9:54 of the third period. Kalamazoo's Mathieu Curadeau had the puck in the right corner and tried to slip it cross ice when Pierce jumped into the slot and gloved the puck, dropping it on his stick and ripping his 15th goal of the campaign past Nie. Kalamazoo closed to 2-1 when Andrew Forunier collected his 15th score at 15:28 of the third. The final goal was a shorthanded empty net effort from Barret Ehgoetzwho ended the scoring at 19:18 with his twelfth score of the campaign. The shots again favored Cincinnati, 9-8. For the game the Cyclones outshot Kalamazoo, 29-26. Each team had six power play chances, but none of them was converted.
Robert Mayer picked up his ninth win of the season, stopping 25 shots. Ryan Nie took the loss for the Wings, turning away 26 shots.
Cincinnati is now 19-11-1, while Kalamazoo is 17-8-4. The Cyclones play at Johnstown on Saturday (Jan. 2) at 7:05pm ending the three game road trip. The game can be heard on the internet at www.cycloneshockey.com. The club returns to U.S. Bank Arena on Tuesday, January 6 for a 7:30pm clash against Trenton.
Tickets for the 2009-10 Cincinnati Cyclones season are now on sale. The Cyclones Sales Department can be reached at 513-421-PUCK, extension 3. Selected Friday night games are carried on 1530-AM Homer, while all 72 regular season games can be heard on the club's website at: www.cycloneshockey.com. Great to be in 1st place to start the new year.
WOOHOO!!! First to post in 2010! |
What you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

The Nailers say "You're welcome."
Any word on Sproat after the hit from Jurynec? I believe your radio guy said he went back to the bench, so I assume it's not too serious. |

We don't pass on information to the enemy
He's fine. He's never felt better. In fact, he wanted to run a marathon after the game was over.
See ya on the 8th-weather permitting. |

Depending on the weather, I'll be there. The plan is to finally visit your barn on 2/20.
Congrats to your boys on the win. I won't be at all surprised to see them go on another mid-season tear.
The Nailers are threatening to climb out of the basement, which is good enough for now. |

| This is certainly shaping up to be a very exciting season with the clones, Toledo and Kalamazoo all so close in the standings for the whole first half. Glad to see the Cyclones performing so well as of late, can't wait to go to the game on the sixth. |

Was a very lazy effort by Kalamazoo, all-around. The Wings tried making the long pass from behind their own net to the other blueline all night long and to Cincy's credit they just concentrated on shutting that down. I don't think they sprung one of those all night long, the Cyclones just clogged up center ice and kept their sticks down to get after any pucks that came near. The lone goal Kalamazoo got was generated by them carrying the puck into the zone, getting it deep to a corner, and then throwing the puck in front of Mayer and it pinballing a bit until it was banged into the net.
The Cyclones also kept their offense simple -- bring the puck up along the boards, work it in deep, and then try to get a pass back to out front of Nie and see if a Cyclone can get to it. Nie stopped a couple point-blank (including one or two off his toe) but Wings got caught chasing the puck deep too often and left the slot open or mostly-open.
Was frustrating to watch as a Wings fan, but Cyclones get credit for playing a good, simple road game and the officiating was more than fair both ways -- the refs let both teams just play and I can't tell you how happy most of us in Kzoo were to see that. |

@gordon - nice article in the paper today (1/5/10) on you and your urban photography. good form.
@primis - you've obviously watched the wings play more than i have but i have yet to see them be a consistent threat once established in the offensive zone. in the games i've seen the wings create most of their scoring in transition, so any team that can clog the transition game up has a chance. the wings have plenty of skill but when they establish offensive zone possession they seem a bit lost. there is plenty of puck cycling and thats about it. i've lost count how many times they've cycled for what seems like minutes on end only to take a point shot with no traffic in front or a bad angle shot that misses the net and clears the zone. |

You're right about the transition game. It's not their only game (they really stuck it to Reading early in the season with puck possession at times, oddly enough, and they've also done it to Toledo) but it seems at times they get lazy or something and they instead try to hit Lloyd, Cleaver, and a couple other forwards with long passes.
They absolutely can skate in the zone and set up, they just don't seem very interested in doing so some times. It's very similar to how the Red Wings inexplicably will go into a game and do nothing but fire shots from the point and fail to score, even though it's clear they could work the puck to the front of the net and do something better.
The times they struggle, it's because they're not doing the basic things to score, like putting the puck on net and crashing to get a rebound, or failing to make shorter passes into the offensive zone. Considering how physical of a team they have, that's frustrating... especially now that they have Bootland back, who can be a demon around the crease. |
