WHEELING, West Virginia - The Cincinnati Cyclones seven game road winning streak came to an end in a 4-2 loss at Wheeling on Friday night. The defeat also ended a four game overall winning stretch and knocked Cincinnati out of the top spot in the North Division, as Kalamazoo won a 6-5 overtime decision from Trenton to take the lead.
Wheeling scored both goals of the first period on special teams. Former Jordan Fox tipped in his tenth goal of the season Thomas Beauregard and Mitch Ganzak on the power play at 9:10. The lead extended when T.J. Fox intercepted a pass in the Cincinnati end and worked his way loose on a breakaway. The shorthanded goal in the upper right corner of the net was his 13th of the campaign and was assisted by Brad Thiessen. The shots favored Wheeling, 12-2, in the opening term.
Wheeling extended the lead to 3-0 when Jon D'Aversa netted his first of the season with a drive in the high slot from Casey Pierro-Zabotel and Kyle Bushee. A little more than a minute later, Cincinnati forward Brett Robinson lit the lamp for the seventh time from Brian O'Hanley and Jimmy Kilpatrick. Cincinnati won the shots battle in the second period, 11-7.
The Cyclones closed the gap to 3-2 when Scott Reynolds banged home his 14th score of the season on the power play from Hans Benson and Dwayne Zinger. But a major penalty for charging to Cincinnati's Max Lacroix took a top offensive threat away for the rest of the game. A five-on-three power play allowed the Nailers to score an insurance goal and make it 4-2. Thomas Beauregard's 19th goal came from Jordan Fox and Ganzak at 10:57. The shots in the period favored Wheeling, 9-6, and for the game Wheeling had the upper hand, 28-19.
Cincinnati was one-for-eight with the power play, while Wheeling was two-for-six with the extra attacker. Brad Thiessen picked up the win with 17 saves. Jeremy Smith absorbed the loss, stopping 24 shots in taking his seventh defeat of the year.
The Cyclones played the game a skater short, as center Dustin Sproat was loaned the Milwaukee Admirals (AHL) minutes before the team bus departed for West Virginia. Cincinnati has now sent ten players to the American Hockey League this season.
Cincinnati drops to 21-12-1, while Wheeling is 18-16-2. The Cyclones finish off the weekend with a 7pm clash at Reading. That game will be carried on the club's website at: www.cycloneshockey.com.
