CINCINNATI - Cincinnati Cyclones forward Max Lacroix netted a hat trick and the club ended a three game losing streak at home with a 5-2 win over the Trenton Devils on Wednesday night. Mike McLean, celebrating his 24th birthday, added a goal and an assist for the winners.
The Cyclones continue to lead the North Division of the American Conference, remaining one point ahead of the Kalamazoo Wings, 5-4 overtime winners at Johsntown tonight.
There was no scoring in the opening period, but Cincinnati had the better chances in the frame. The Cyclones had two power play chances to Trenton's one and outshot the Devils, 10-3.
The offensive fireworks came in the second period as the teams combined for five goals. Trenton opened the scoring flurry when Jeff Prough picked up his 13th goal of the season at 7:33 from Tim Kunes. Less than a minute and a half later, Maxime Lacroix netted his third lamplighter from Barret Ehgoetz and Matt Pierce at 8:48. Less than a minute after the game was tied, Trenton regained the edge with Slavomir Tomko's fourth goal from Chris Poli at 9:24. Mike McLean tallied his ninth goal of the season with a shot from the left wing side from Scott Reynolds and Hans Benson at 11:37. Cincinnati's first lead of the night came courtesy of Dustin Sproat and his eleventh goal of the season from Brock Sheahan and Jimmy Kilpatrick at 15:52. Sproat re-directed a shot from the point from Sheahan to give the Cyclones the lead at the intermission. The shots favored the Devils, 11-10.
Lacroix scored a pair of third period goals to close the scoring. His second of the night at 9:03 from McLean and Pearce extended the lead. Lacroix completed his hat trick with an empty net goal (his fifth of the year) with 11.2 seconds remaining. The shots in the third period were even at ten each and for the game, Cincinnati won the shots battle, 30-24.
Jeremy Smith had his stretch of 100 minutes without surrendering a goal end, but stopped 22 shots to collect his tenth win of the season. Dave Caruso took the loss, his tenth of the year, turning aside 25 shots. Trenton was one for five on the power play, while Cincinnati was unable to convert in five tries.
Cincinnati is now 21-11-1, while Trenton is 12-16-7. The Cyclones put their seven game road winning streak on the line Friday night at Wheeling (7:30pm carried on 1530 Homer The Sports Animal). The club closes out the weekend with a 7pm contest at Reading on Saturday.
Tickets for the 2009-10 Cincinnati Cyclones season are now on sale. The Cyclones Sales Department can be reached at 513-421-PUCK, extension 3. Selected Friday night games are carried on 1530-AM Homer, while all 72 regular season games can be heard on the club's website at: www.cycloneshockey.com. The next game on 1530 Homer will come Friday, January 8 when the Cyclones travel to Wheeling at 7:30pm.

Yeah, the beer cans going on the ice was kind of ridiculous, especially when the guy threw that one from the upper bowl that sprayed everywhere.
Great game though. Pretty good fight in the third period. |

| Forgot to add, kudos to the clones on the blood drive today. Seemed like a lot of people turned out for that this morning. First time I gave blood. |

After Wednesday night's victory over Trenton, the Cyclones now have the largest differential between goals scored and goals against in the league. The Cyclones have scored 21 more goals than they have allowed. Kalamazoo is second in this category with a +20.
The KC team scored 292 goals and allowed 178. This net of +114 equated to over 1.5 goals per game. The current Cyclone team's advantage is about 40% of that (.6 per game). |
