| Third period just after the fish scored on the open net Benson delivered one punch to (can't remember who on Toledo) and knocked him down. It was a great shot and as the ref pulled away Benson had a huge smile on his face. Despite the loss, that was a pretty exciting game. |

Hopefully he'll get suspended a couple games...that way he can't turn the puck over at blue line/center ice and just stand and watch as the other team gets odd man rushed/goals.
Total liability on the ice tonight... |

It was. I don't know if anything was said beforehand, but it looked pretty classless to me.
I doubt he'll get suspended for an unsportsmanlike conduct call; I thought he'd get a lot more for it. |

Only thing I'm worried about is our horrible powerplay. Toledo was in the box all night long. Someone take control of the damn puck and make something happen!!!

| Benson and Tremblay were jawwing all night but Tremblay was afraid to go through with it. He shouldnt have been giving little cheap shots and cross checks if he's too much of a ***** to drop the gloves. He is soft. Whether Hans gets suspended or not is another question but he will most likely be back with Portland by the 22nd after the all star break. |

| As for the powerplay, well it just blows when Cashman isnt there |

| Agree, Unfortunatley Nashville and Milwaukee better get 100% healthy or I dont think we will see Cashman again unless we go deep into the playoffs and Milwaukee doesnt, same goes with Mueller but he is too good at the AHL level to be sent down anymore last year and this year prove he can stay in the AHL |

Clearly a sucker punch, however Tremblay did draw a penalty (two for turtling?) along with Benson. A suspension for Hans is very likely.
I have yet to see what Benson brings to the ice other than being a tough guy. He doesn't pass very well, certainly doesn't shoot and doesn't create space in front of the net. He loses as many battles in the corner as he wins. Defensively he tends to chase the puck forcing the rest of the defense out of position (although last night he was certainly not the only guilty party). Lastly he takes way too many stupid penalties (especially with referees who are known to blow... a quick whistle!).
Unfortunately he spends some serious time with the scoring lines and the powerplay units effectively handcuffing both units. I know we are somewhat shorthanded offensively but Hans isn't the answer. Until we get some talent sent back down (if that even happens at all) we may have to look at signing some lesser talents from the CHL/SPHL/College.
Hans is very good at what he does best; namely being a fighter. Most of the guys here in the ECHL won't even go with him and those who do won't do it again. He does keep the cheap shots down on our skill guys but in my opinion at way too high of a cost. Instead of trying to make him an offensive threat he should be a part time guy that goes in to straighten the other team out or to make a statement. |

Sucker punch.
Not sure what was being said or what happened earlier in the game, but there is no place for sucker punching in the game. If the guy won't drop 'em... So be it. Make him pay in other ways.
Personally I'd like to see Hans on the 3rd line playing the enforcer role instead of working on his game skills on top lines, but the coach knows better than me, and the roster cupboard has been pretty bare lately.

| I agree with Catch 22 about the fact that Hans is best on the 3rd line. Now with Sproat and McLean back I think that it will be easier for Chuck to move him down to the 3rd line where he belongs |

I agree. The crappy part is that Benson was doing a great job at connecting with the younger children at the game that night. You have Benson giving pucks to kids during the warm-ups, the kids pick up on his name/number, and then he turns around and sucker punches a guy later on.
I would've preferred another Morehouse mutual high-speed thrashing than Benson doing his best Sgroi impression.

Yeah. The Sgrois of the world are why you need the Bensons and Johnsons on your team. Without a good deterrent the goons tend to start doing things you don't want done to goalies and scorers.
Its a fine line between being an enforcer and being a goon. From where I was sitting Saturday it looked like Hans crossed that line. That's unfortunate.
Maybe we saw it wrong or something happened that we don't know about. If not, I'm sure Hans got some coaching after that little display. I love a good enforcer on the home team, but I can live without having a suckerpunching goon.
By all accounts Hans is a really nice guy, and I've also noticed him working with the kids after warmups. Lets hope this was an isolated incident, or again, something beyond what it looked like on the surface.
On another note, I see Sgroi is back in the conference. Nice. We'll be needing Hans. Or somebody needs to go to Alaska and get Justin on a plane.

Maybe the other guy talked about his mother, or dead puppy from when he was a child, and it just put him over the edge...

| There's a clear issue here that Chuck may have to deal with. You can't tell Hans to quit playing his physical game but at the same time he cant cross that lone |

| I was hoping someone had the whole thing on video so I could see it again but so far I haven't seen it. It looked to me like Benson was tripped hard doing a flip before hitting the ice and when he came up he threw the punch. I am not sure I would call that a sucker punch. The other player had to know a response was coming. It happened in the second period by the way. I was driving and listening on the radio by the 3rd period. |
