STOCKTON, California - The American Conference claimed a 10-9 shootout victory from the National Conference at the 2010 ECHL All-Star Game presented by Reebok Hockey on Wednesday night. Cincinnati Cyclones goaltender Jeremy Smith stopped seven of nine shots faced in the third period and overtime and then turned aside three of the four efforts he faced in the shootout to collect the win. He becomes the first Cyclones player in team history to earn the win at an ECHL All-Star Game. Cyclones forward led the American Conference in scoring with three points.
Smith was one of three Cyclones representatives at the ECHL All-Star Game. He was joined by forward Matt Pierce and trainer Bob Case, all representing the American Conference.
The American Conference jumped out to a 3-2 first period lead. Pierce assisted on the third goal of the frame, breaking a 2-2 deadlock late in the stanza.
The second period saw the National Conference score five goals to build a 7-5 lead going into the third period.
The Cincinnati players then stepped forward.
Pierce assisted on the opening score of the final period, a score from Gwinnett Gladiators rookie defenseman Drew Paris to close the gap to 7-6. His helper on Johnstown Chiefs rookie forward Connor Shields' second lamplighter of the night tied the game at 9-9 with less than four minutes to go.
Smith then outdueled Idaho Steelheads rookie goaltender Richard Bachmann in regulation time, the overtime and the shootout. Bachmann, who leads the ECHL in goals against average at 2.22--statistically leads Smith, second on the circuit with a 2.61 goals against average in the regular season.
Smith turned away six of the eight shots he saw in regulation time. Stopped the only effort either netminder saw n overtime and then came up big in the shootoutallowing just one goal in four tries. He becomes the fourth netminder in club history to play in the contest and the first to collect a victory.
Pierce becomes the eighth skater to participate in the All-Star Game for the club and produced the second-most points at the event in team history. Only Sheldon Gorski (1997-98 with Louisville) had more points. He turned in four assists at that contest.
