CINCINNATI - Cincinnati Cyclones defenseman Brian O'Hanley scored 1:42 into overtime to give the Cincinnati Cyclones a 3-2 triumph over the South Carolina Stingrays on Friday night. Goaltender Robert Mayer stopped 35 shots to take his twelfth win of the season.

The contest was the first regular season game between the Cyclones and Stingrays. The teams had met in both the 2008 and 2009 American Conference Finals. Cincinnati won a five game strugglewith three overtime decisionsand captured the Kelly Cup in 2008. South Carolina swept the Cyclones en route to its third Kelly Cup championship last season.

The Cyclones opened the scoring at 16:03 of the first period when Jimmy Kilpatrick notched his sixth goal of the season on the power play. After Barret Ehgoetz slid the puck from the left point to the right point, Brock Sheahan fired a shot that rebounded to the left post and Kilpatrick slapped it home. South Carolina rebounded with a Matt Scherer scorehis twelfth of the yearto knot the scores at one each at the first intermission. South Carolina outshot Cincinnati, 10-8.

Cincinnati grabbed the lead with the lone marker of the second period when Mark Voakes, appearing in his first game since January 2 (eleven games)notched his fourth goal of the season. Voakes fired a puck past Shane Connelly from the left wing side as Dustin Sproat and Brian O'Hanley had the assists. The Stingrays won the shots battle, 13-8, in the frame.

South Carolina evened the scores at 1:40 of the third period, as Keith Johnson picked up his 19th goal of the season on the power play. The Stingrays won the shots battle, 13-9.

In the overtime, O'Hanley's heroics ended the game at 1:42 with his fifth goal of the campaign. Cincinnati outshot South Carolina, 2-1, but the Stingrays won the shots battle for the game, 37-27. Cincinnati went two-for-four on the power play, while South Carolina was one-for-three. Cincinnati now leads the North Division by four points over Kalamazoo.

Robert Mayer took the win, stopping 35 shots, while Shane Connelly took the overtime loss, stopping 24 shots.

The crowd of 5857 pushed the Cyclones season attendance to 80,034an average of 3637 per game. It was the 19th largest crowd in team history. The Cyclones sit 16th in the ECHL in attendance, 25.6 percent ahead of last season's pace through 22 games. Cincinnati, which has finished first or second in attendance percentage improvement in each of the prior two seasons, has attracted more fans than it had through 28 games in 2008-09 (through February 25, 2009).

Cincinnati is 27-16-1, while South Carolina is 30-11-7. The Cyclones complete the week with a trip to Kalamazoo tomorrow night at 7:30pm. Next Wednesday (Wheeling) and Thursday (South Carolina), the Cyclones have home games at U.S. Bank Arena.

Tickets for the 2009-10 Cincinnati Cyclones season are now on sale. The Cyclones Sales Department can be reached at 513-421-PUCK, extension 3. Selected Friday night games are carried on 1530-AM Homer, while all 72 regular season games can be heard on the club's website at: www.cycloneshockey.com. One of those games when we played well enough to win but could have easily lost.

The power play sure didn't miss #2. LOL. I thought that the puck movement was far superior to what we've had of late with the exception of one of the four pp's-which was real bad. I like the idea of either O'Hanley and/or Sheehan at the point. Jozsa nor Motherwell is an accomplished passer and neither has a powerful shot. I think that O'Hanley and Sheehan can generate more goals and rebounds that the team of Motherwell/Jozsa due to their superior shooting skills.

I don't know about anyone else, but Mayer's puck handling and passing seems really strong to me. He stops and controls pucks going around the boards behind the net like nobody's business at this level and he passes with great authority. I also likes the way he challenges shooters by cutting down the angles. It's obvious that he has very good physical tools-no wonder Montreal signed him.

He also holds his glove saves for a ridiculous amount of time. I think even Desjardins would blush over Mayer's level of h-dogging it on the glove saves

The tandem of Mayer and Smith has really taken shape. The biggest
difference in Mayer is his use of the side net bar. Early in the season
he tended to stay in the middle and rebounds were being slipped in. Now
he locks against the bar and the proper "goalie wall" is being achieved.
Are those the new uniforms that was rumoured? I hate them. The word
"CINCINNATI" is just way too long to go down like that. Maybe smaller
letters and put the crest up by the heart and the number down by the
waist would help. Good to see clean hard hockey for a change. What a shock
to see players pulling up and stopping 2' from the goalie and an instant
mugging not happening. Now why didn't we have the same effort on Monday
against Johnstown ?

Didn't make it to the game, but saw the highlights on Youtube. Did Bill Cunningham really get ejected by the ref? If he did what did he do?

What you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

ZINGER!!!!!

I liken it to sort of a bad pro wrestling skit. Before the game Willie announced the starting lineups and the scratches, calling them "The Lowly South Carolina Stingrays" and mis-pronouncing players names.

Throughout the first period, Willie was making some comments off-play like "Ref make some calls" and things like that all throughout. SC scored with 6 seconds left in the period and at the end of the period, he went into his typical Willie-style rant about the officiating, saying there were off-sides that weren't called, shots in the goal crease and basically ripping the officials, and saying they were incompetent.

The head official, who had already gone off the ice skated back on and he and Willie got into a shouting match and then the ref "ejected" him. I swear I saw the referee fight back laughter several times during the exchange. It was definitely intended to be comedic in nature (at least I found it funny). Then Wildman took over for the rest of the game.

Very cool of the officiating crew to agree to be a part of something that probably would've seemed quite outlandish to them. I'm sure SC was told beforehand what was going on, as well, because they didn't seem to bat an eye about Willie either.

The "referee" wasn't the game official. Funny, never the less. And Willie got to leave early to attend to whatever he had planned for Friday night.

Great description of the goings-on JK! That wasn't the actual ref who skated back on after the period. He didn't have a number on the back of his shirt and his pants didn't fit. Couldn't skate, either.
Got to admit, he had me fooled for a minute...

We sit on the penalty box side in Section 130. I never could see the back of "the ref's" jersey because I only saw him as he skated toward the PA box. Then he and Willie got into it, and I never thought to look at the ref again as he skated away. Thanks for clearing that up!

Very hard fought game by both teams. South Carolina to me was impressive (as of course were the Cyclones). South Carolina is facing teams that are pumped up and ready to play them every night, and that has to be hard to maintain that kind of intensity night in and night out. I can certainly see why they are at the top of the ECHL.

...And on the eighth day, GOD created the Cyclones!

A great game!! I thought the only time the Cyclones look somewhat disorganized was the first third or so of the final period. Otherwise I thought they played very well throughout. Makes you wonder what was going on against the lowly Chiefs the other night? The way they celebrated after O'Hanley scored the game winner showed how much winning that game meant to them.
