Anyone actually want to chat about the Clones??. My observations after last night game.

1) Last seven games or so have seen a big change in offensive tactics which are working out great. Biggest are using the point to start the sequence more both on both PP and even strength rather than relying exclusively on cycling in the corners . 2nd is that when they do use the corners to start the play they are also moving in someone into the high slot rather than just the low slot for back door attempts. 2-3 goals last night came that way from the high slot. I dont think they are big enough to park themselves right out front but they are quick enough to use the high slot.

2) Both goalies have come a long way since October--especially Mayer who is now using his athletic skills to make saves rather than just rely on his positioning to block shots. Both are moving so much better and anticipating. Both still give up a few soft ones but they have become a strong tandem. My concern is using two 20 year olds once playoffs arrive but hopefully they will surprise me.

3)Two new defense men really have helped out moving the puck out of our own end. Not to pick on him, but the clones have won all the games since Zinger went on the DL. He is not quick enough to work in the Clones system and especially can't move the puck out. Some players are better in specific systems and a big slow d man doesnt fit with the clones system.

4) Noticed during the 2-3 rd period how more and more adults wear Clones gear which to me is a sign that many more non season ticket holders are becoming fans rather than just curious attendees. The steady weekend crowds of about 6000 shows that these games have been a destination for a much stronger fan base. Last two years 6000 was a special event headcount. It has now become routine for the weekends. Also lots of kids which helps build for the future.

5. No one finishes his checks better than Chirs Morehouse.

Anyone else want to talk about the team and the fact they now have the best record in the conference rather than about the the other crap floating around?

Great points, but they are also undefeated wearing the new uniforms.

What you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

ZINGER!!!!!

Last night Sullivan really let the players be physical during the first part of the first period, I thought Sullivan missed alot of calls but at least he didnt cut us short when we got physical with Johnstown. Great Game, Great Crowd, and I think for the weekends the crowds will get even better because this team WINS!!

Nice points.

I too have noticed a huge improvement without Zinger in the lineup. Things are much smoother, and we no longer have that issue where the rest of the team is gone and Zinger is all alone with the puck in our defensive zone. That was happening alot, and it caused turnovers and confusion.
Not to pick on the guy, but I agree. He just doesn't seem to fit in the system. It was painful to watch sometimes.

Prokop and Marchesi both seem to be working out well.

Morehouse isn't fast, isn't big, doesn't have a great shot, and doesn't handle the puck particularly well. But nobody plays harder on every single shift. He's like a blender on skates. Our own Jordin Tootoo.
I like it. Every team needs a guy like that.

I love Morehouse. As far as his speed goes, I think he might not be back to 100% yet. He got injured earlier in the year (don't know what the injury was) but he hasn't looked as quick since then.

I agree on Morehouse. Everyone has to have his role. He is like the energizer bunny--also his checks are legal--doesnt get the elbows up etc.

Also a good point on Zinger. Things just seem to slow down when he is on the ice and this team gets into trouble when they slow down. Witness the last ten minutes of the 2nd period in last nights game. Am sure they got a talking to by Chuck between periods because they cam out skating again in period three.

Went back to check on the last four home weekend games and home weekday games. Weekends averaged 6130 while weekdays averaged 1690. This about twice what both numbers were prior to championship playoffs when we would get maybe 3K on weekends and 1k--if that--during the week. People are becoming fans and not just curious spectators.

I'm starting to really get the feeling that this team will be a cup contender. It seems as if all of the pieces are starting to fall into place. Of course a lot can happen between now and the playoffs, but you have to like where the team sits with 21 games left to go. Let's hope the Clones continue to play the way we all know they can.

Also, has anyone noticed that South Carolina is in the midst of what appears to be colossal free-fall? 2-5-2-1 in their last 10 games and while they still lead the E in points with 73, Idaho is only one back with 72. The Clones are also in the hunt for the Brabham Cup with 67 points. If we continue to play well and get some help along the way, the Points title could be a realistic possibility. GO CLONES.

I'm glad we're back talking about the Cyclones..team..fans..etc. Really tired of reading all that other c--p! I'm a long-time Cyclones fan and not as versed in statistics & stuff like that, but I know good play when I see it, and that's been happening a lot lately by this team. I do know their passing has improved tremendously (in my opinion.) They seem to be very aware where their team-mates are on the ice, and also are getting very good at stealing the puck from the other guys. Let's keep this thread going so the Section 60 site can be meaninful once more and not a place for whining, pot-shots and just plain meaningless chatter.
GO CYCLONES!

Have to agree that the teams' passing has improved tremendously!! Have also noted that more often than not, they are 'standing up' the opposition at the blue line, not making it so easy to cross with the puck!

I agree that there has been quite an improvement in the ability to steal the puck right off the stick of the opposition. Especially liked the steal in the first period where (not sure who) reached his stick between the skates of the Chiefs' player and got the puck!

Only area where I would like to see improvement, would be for the guys to spead out a little bit more in the attack zone. Have noted quite often that they tend to congregate to one side in the attack zone. This leaves a wide open slot for the goalie to clear the puck. Would like to see a player there to pick up those rebounds!

Plus, the 'clones are one of the stingiest teams to give up goals. That bodes well knowing they don't always have to rely on someone catching fire every night.

I haven't updated CycWords, but I have a few ideas rolling around in my head which I'll hopefully get to this week. But until then here's my quick 2 cents.

- I've always been a fan of setting up in the high slot versus low. There are only a hand full of guys that can work on the goalies door step well and guys like Voakes, Reynolds, Robinson, Kilpatrick and conmpany seem better served setting up high and then attacking the net rather than starting down low. Morehouse on the other hand can reek so much havoc working down low that I like seeing him head there.

- Offensively Kilpatrick has found his stride and getting Voakes back has helped the offensive production. The 'Clones are rolling 3 productive lines now which makes them hard to match up against.

- The D is surely quicker without Zinger. I have been very critical of Zinger over at CycWords, but to Dwayne's defense I don't think he played a single game healthy all season. I don't know if we really had a chance to see what he really had to offer as a player.

- Speaking of the D. I was talking with a friend and the name Jason Jozsa came up. He'll most likely be in Milwaukee through the Olympic break, but we discussed wheather he would crack the line up with the way guys are playing on the blue line right now. We both agreed it would be hard to break things up. The D-core is playing very well. The weak points are probably Marchesi and Prokop, but would replacing either of them with Jozsa be an upgrade?

More of my ramblings can be read over at www.cycwords.wordpress.com something new should be up this week.
