JOHNSTOWN, Pennsylvania - The Cincinnati Cyclones used a two goal third period from Mark Voakes to blow past the Johnstown Chiefs, 5-1, on Sunday night. Former Johnstown forward Ryan Del Monte notched the game winning goal in his first game at the Cambria County War Memorial as a visiting player. Jeremy Smith turned away 17 shots for the win.
Johnstown got the first goal of the season when former Cyclone Bryan Marshall picked up his 16th goal of the season from the left wing side. Matthew Kang and Jim McKenzie had the assists on the score. Cincinnati answered at 14:27 when Barret Ehgoetz nabbed his 20th goal of the year. After a heavy check at the Cyclone blueline was delivered by Jamie Coghlan, Scott Reynolds picked up the loose puck and led a three on two rush. Reynolds fed the puck in the slot to the trailing Ehgoetz, who ripped the shot into the upper left corner of the cage. Four Cincinnati shots clanged off goal posts in the opening period. The shots favored the Cyclones, 6-5, in the opening term.
The Cyclones took their first lead of the night with the lone goal of the second period. Ryan Del Monte, in his game against his former team at the Cambria County War Memorial, snapped his fourth goal of the season from the high slot over the right shoulder of Chiefs goaltender John Murray. The power play goal occurred when Brian O'Hanley had a shot deflected onto the stick of Del Monte, who ripped the shot. Brock Sheahan had the other assist on the marker. The shots favored Cincinnati, 10-9, in the frame.
The Cyclones exploded for three third period goals to put the game away. A pair of five on three goals twenty seconds apart sealed the victory. Mark Voakes got his seventh of the season at 8:10, as Dustin Sproat and Brett Motherwell had the assists. Scott Reynolds netted his 19th at 8:30 to build the lead to 4-1, as O'Hanley and Sheahan had the helpers. The scoring was closed out by Voakes' second of the period at 15:51 from Pierce. Cincinnati gained the upper hand again in shots, 7-4. For the game, the Cyclones won the shots battle, 23-13.
The Cyclones were three for eleven on the power play, while Johnstown was zero for two with the extra man. Jeremy Smith stopped 17 shots to pick up his 17th win of the season. John Murray turned away 18 shots in taking the loss.
The Cyclones extended their winning streak to a season-best seven games. The last time Cincinnati had a stretch as long was during the Kelly Cup championship season of 2008, when the Cyclones assembled a 17 game winning streak from January 16 through February 29. The victory was also 16th away from U.S. Bank Arenatying the Cyclones with South Carolina for most by an American Conference team.
Cincinnati is 34-17-1, while Johnstown is 14-29-8. The Cyclones return to U.S. Bank Arena for three games next week, when Toledo visits on Wednesday and Wheeling is in for games on Friday and Saturday. All three games start at 7:30pm.
Cincinnati leads the North Division with 69 points. Kalamazoo is second with 58, while Wheeling and Toledo are tied for tied with 56 points.

The next game on 1530 Homer will come next Friday (February 19), when the Cyclones host Wheeling at 7:30pm.

I love seeing all those assists from defensemen on the score sheet!
And it looks like the 3rd period got seriously chippy. Morehouse and Hendrixx are kind of understood, but a fight and a misconduct from Prokop is a surprise. Someone must've done something pretty dirty to spawn that response.

There will be major changes in the ECHL for next year with the owner of the Checkers (ECHL) buying Albany (AHL) and moving the team to Charlotte next year. ( http://albanyriverrats.com/news/latest/index.html?article_id=2034 )The Checkers will probably disappear and Johnstown may have to stabilize the South .
Sad to see a legendary franchise move or shutdown. Sucks big time for the fans (Johnstown and Albany). |
