CINCINNATI - The Toledo Walleye scored a power play goal with 1:36 to play to tie the game and then netted another man advantage goal 1:43 into overtime to beat the Cincinnati Cyclones, 2-1, on Wednesday night. The goals wrecked the Cyclones seven game winning streak, the longest of the season.

Cincinnati scored the only goal of the opening term, to grab a 1-0 edge. All-Star rookie Matt Pierce ripped his 26th lamplighter of the season at 4:19streaking up the right wing side and firing the puck just inside the left post past the outstretched right leg of Toledo netminder Alec Richards. Hans Benson and Jason Jozsa picked up the assists. The Cyclones had an opportunity to extend the lead with a 1:28 five-on-three power play chance, but were unable to convert. Cincinnati outshot the Walleye, 10-6, in the first period.

There was no scoring in the second period. Toledo had two power play chances to a brief 28 second edge to Cincinnati in the frame. The shots favored the Walleye, 9-7.

Toledo tied the game up at 18:24, when Sebastian Piche slipped a shot through Cyclones netminder Robert Mayer to tie the game up. Piche's fifth goal came on the power play and stopped a shutout streak of 127:23 that the rookie had against Toledo. The Walleye had three man-advantage chances in the third stanzaincluding a 23 second stretch of two-man advantage. The shots favored Cincinnati, 11-7, in the final frame.

A holding call against Cincinnati's Scott Marchesi with 13 seconds left in regulation gave Toledo a power play to start overtime. On the first shot of bonus time, Chris Robertson tipped a shot from Maxime Tanguay past Mayer at 1:43 to end the game. It was Robertson's 13th score of the campaign.

For the game, Cincinnati was zero for five on the power play, while Toledo went two for six. The Cyclones outshot the Walleye, 28-23. Alec Richards took the victory, his 14th of the year, turning away 27 shots. Robert Mayer absorbed the overtime loss, dropping to 15-7-1, bu stopping 21 shots.

Cincinnati is 34-17-2, while Toledo is 27-21-4. This was the first game of a five game homestand that will run through February 27. The Cyclones host Wheeling on Friday (Feb. 19), which will be team photo night with one dollar John Morrell hot dogs. Saturday (Feb. 20), Wheeling is also in for Pink In The Rink Night with the Cyclones wearing pink jerseys that will be auctioned off after the game with proceeds benefitting the Patty Brisben Foundation. Donatos pizza slices will be one dollar each as well.

Cincinnati leads the North Division with 70 points. Kalamazoo and Toledo are second with 58, while Wheeling is fourth with 56 points.

Tickets for the 2009-10 Cincinnati Cyclones season are now on sale. The Cyclones Sales Department can be reached at 513-421-PUCK, extension 3. Selected Friday night games are carried on 1530-AM Homer, while all 72 regular season games can be heard on the club's website at: www.cycloneshockey.com. The next game on 1530 Homer will come next Friday (February 19), when the Cyclones host Wheeling at 7:30pm.

Despite the outcome, it was a hard-hitting and exciting game to watch. Wish the Clones could have pulled it off but I guess you can't have everything.

Toledo's goalie, Alec Richards, should have been selected the No. 1 star. He was terrific -- the best player on the ice tonight for either team. He made some big saves, including a spectacular save on a two-on-none break the Cyclones had with 16 minutes to play in the third period to keep it a one-goal game. It was the turning point of the game, as I told the people I was with to remember that save.

Pierce should have been the second star, and Robertson from Toledo the third star. Sure, Robertson had the game-winner but if Richards doesn't make the big save on the two-on-none to keep it a one-goal game midway through the third, Robertson doesn't net the winner in OT.

Did anyone else see the drama with that kid? About halfway through the third period a Toledo player's stick broke and flew up into the stands. That small kid in the orange shirt ran down, grabbed it out of the aisle and then tossed it back on the ice while the crowd around him chanted "throw it back." Gotta give him credit, he was a small kid and got it all the way back out there.

However, soon after the crowd cheered and hi-fived him for throwing it back, a memeber of the arena staff came down and started talking to the family he was with. Eventually the entire group started walking up the aisle, the crowd chanted "Let him stay" and they sat back down. The arena staff and people from the group kept going up and down the stairs and eventually the kid wound up with a real hockey stick, the group stayed and the crowd cheered. We passed them on the way out and the kids mom said: "they tried to arrest us." Having worked there in the past I know that's the policy for people who throw beer on the ice, but what do you guys think of how they handled it?

I can't believe they gave the kid another stick. The parents should of stopped the kid from throwing it back on the ice and controlled their kid. Then the fans egging the kid on and high fiving him just encouraged the kid and will not help his behavior in the future. Plus any good parents should of in some way disciplined him because they could of been arrested for his actions.

Oh, and what if that kid didn't get it over the glass and hit some fan in the head in the front row or hit a player in the head (either one of theirs or ours)?

I decided to test out some new equipment at the game. Nothing special, just some random shots quickly thrown together.

That would require a little parenting, a lot to ask of some people who have kids. It's nice that no one was hurt, but asking them to leave certainly would have been reasonable.

How does it go from 1. almost being arrested, to 2. going back to your seat with a souvenir hockey stick. They should have tossed the kid and his parents. Shame on all of the drunken fools in the arena for their behavior and condoning of this act - could have been ugly!

I have never seen a stick break and fly that far into the stands. makes me like the net.
My kids would never have thrown the stick back. They would have said "it's a game used stick are you crazy?" Hockey fans vs casual fans I guess.

Back to the hockey game. Team played well for 55 minutes and Richards did stand on his head but 3 penalties--all well deserved, in the last five minutes!!!. What started it was a real stupid penalty against Del Monte. Five minutes left in the offensive zone and he slashes the goalie after Richards had frozen the puck and the whistle had blown. Then he even smiled at the goalie afterwards on the way to the box. Absolutely no need especially in a 1-0 game. O Hanley's hooking penalty was from aggressive play but Marchesi's was a lazy penalty for holding in the corner with 13 seconds left. Could see his arm around the guy from the other end where we sit. Such lack of discipline is unusual for a Cyclone team and it cost them a point last night.

I couldn't go to the game but when I looked at the box score and saw all of the late penalities it told the story.

Lately we've had a better handle on Toledo but its still not good enough.

Yes, I grew up playing hockey... In Alabama.
