Last nights crowd of 4,756 against Wheeling was really good and I even got to bring my seven year old cousin to her first hockey game, she loved it. I had a few observations though of where I think the Cyclones are really missing out on some good opportunities.

1)Group Sales: Last night I came with my dads company who had a group of 30+ including kids and family members and such. The Cyclones staff does a decent job with this, but last night they kind of dropped the ball. When my dad and I showed up early the staff member asked us: "Uh, weren't you guys supposed to be here Wednesday night?" Nope. We had tickets for last nights game for weeks. As part of the group sales promotion your group gets t shirts for everyone and your group's name on the scoreboard and announced over the PA. Since there was some sort of mixup they just gave us a box full of random t shirts and odd sizes, not the sizes we had sent them a list of. They also didn't announce the company name over the PA or put it up on the scoreboard, probably since they thought we were supposed to be there wednesday. Although, I was at wednesday's game and they didn't say the name. All in all we had a great time, but I think with a few alterations the Cyclones could have a much stronger group sales approach.

Despite how large your group is, tickets are still $12 a piece. I realize that's not much, but if you offered tickets at $10 a piece for groups that have x amount of people, its strong encouragement to come back. Don't just put the name on the scoreboard, maybe offer a advertisement in the game program and when you do announce the name maybe do it more prominently. Like "this power play brought to you by the folks at such and such company who are in attendance tonight." Or like I've seen in Fort Wayne they say "Will the folks from so and so please stand up!?" Then they shine the light on them during time outs.

2)Last night's dollar hot dogs: Don't get me wrong, I love the dollar hot dog special and I'm not the strictest observer of Lent, but I think the Cyclones could really take advantage of this. If instead of dollar hot dogs on Friday nights during Lent (when most Catholics don't eat meat in observance of their faith), why not offer dollar fish sandwiches and dollar slices of pizza? Throw in cheap beer and you make it just like the fish fry's they hold at Catholic churches. I bet you'd get a lot of people to come down and really drive up concession sales from those who are there.

Just some observations, anyone else have thoughts?

You could try to talk to the USBA staff, but I'm sure you will get the same result as the rest of have had, nothing. First the cheap beer already happens on Wednseday and Thursday night's, and the security is about fed up with it.
Some of us up here on the board have already petitioned USBA to have $1 soda night's. To no avail we get a no.I'm sure you already know this. But tonights game is $1 slice of pizza night.
Good luck on your endeavor's.

Thanks Tam. I understand that the cheap beer gets to be somewhat of a problem, but I think if the security/staff had better communication they could control it better. $1 soda nights isn't a bad idea, its a shame they didn't take your suggestion. Hopefully in the future we'll continue to see better promotions as the crowds seem to be getting steadily larger.

As I've said before, Cincinnati is just not a "Hockey Town." Even when we get good crowds its typically because there is some sort of promotion that has nothing to actually do with hockey, or its a Saturday night and there just isn't anything else to do.

Of the 20 people in our immediate area last night, MAYBE 4 or 5 people were actually paying attention to the game. And its extra frustrating when these folks stay in their seats during intermission to watch tent pitching contests and try to catch T-Shirts, and THEN they all get up to go to the bathroom WHEN THE GAME STARTS.
Ugh.

And the cheap beer nights are the same type of stuff. 1 out of 10 people actually watching the hockey game. The rest are getting drunk and building beer can pyramids.

This might be insulting to some of you, but Columbus Georgia is actually more of a Hockey Town than Cincinnati. Small crowds and SPHL level play, but the folks there are actually WATCHING THE GAME.

Again, tough town for the organization to be successful in. But we'll hope they keep trying and in the meantime we'll deal with the extra curricular crap if thats what it takes to have a team here.

Its just kind of sad that this city has exactly one continually successful pro sports team and there are probably about 2000 people that actually care.

Yes, I grew up playing hockey... In Alabama.

you will not eat a hot dog(or meat) during Lent But you will drink $1
beers? Oh the Catholic Faith kills me lol. I never did understand that. But oh well who am I to judge? If you want your company name announced during a power play or a time out become a sponsor and spend the big bucks they do. I do agree with you that they need to have their stuff together when you spend the money on a big group and the flub it up. They should have your T-Shirts ready and your name should go on the big screen. I for one wish they would do $1 sodas but they are not going to do it . I hope if you ever bring another group to a game it goes smoother next time.

P.S.
Doesn't Pizza sauce of meat in it? lol J/K

The idea of $1 fish sandwiches during Lent could definitely pack the place.

While things like the Power Play and Penalty Kill are already sponsored (although you rarely hear the sponsors at the game, it's more of a radio thing) but spotlighting groups of 25 or more is a great idea. I also agree that groups of a certain size should get a ticket discount or even a voucher for a drink would work. It sounds like they really dropped the ball with your dad's group.

I heartily agree with Catch 22 about some attendees (a lot really) don't even know there's a hockey game going on aand probably couldn't even tell you who was playing. I'm really disgusted with the constant traffic up and down the steps while the puck is in play. It's very annoying especially from where I sit on an aisle. The signs and sign holders really don't do much good. I wish Wildman could announce it a few times during the game. It might also help if they put the announcement up on the jumbotron Guess I'm just dreaming! Worst thing is...some of the regular offenders are regular hockey fans.

Ha, well notice I said I wasn't the strictest observer of Lent. However, my dad and many people in our group last night (and I'd imagine many other in attendance as well) do follow the practice. The whole not eating of meat is symbolic and if you really want me to go on a long winded explanation, come find me at a game and I'd be happy to explain it (all that Catholic schooling has to be good for something, right? :D ). My point was, if they offered fish sandwiches it would be a great promotion. You see lots of restaurants and entertainment places offer Lenten specials, I think it be a big hit at the clones games.

You know as much as I or my dad would like to support the team in that way, neither of us have the power to do that. He's not the head honcho at his company, rather he just got a bunch of folks in his department together for a game. I don't think its too much to ask when you spend good money and bring in business that they announce your name more prominently than they currently do.

I'm sure it will. Don't get me wrong, we still had a great time and I'm pretty sure most of those folks will be back in the future.

haha, no I don't think Tomato sauce does. However, one time in high school (I went to a Catholic High School) I tried to order Pepperoni Pizza from a parlor my math teacher owned. He refused to sell it to me since it was a Friday during Lent.
