Cyclones Drop 2-1 Shootout Verdict to Wheeling

Date: 02/21/2010

CINCINNATI The Cincinnati Cyclones dropped a 2-1 shootout decision to the Wheeling Nailers on Saturday night at U.S. Bank Arena. The fourth-largest crowd of the season (7175) was on hand for the Pink In The Rink promotion. Despite the extra session defeatthe Cyclones extended their unbeaten streak in regulation time to 8-0-2 in the month of February.

Wearing pink jerseys that were auctioned off for the Patty Brisben Foundation, the Cyclones and Nailers would put on a defensive struggle through the evening.

Wheeling opened the scoring 7:00 into the first period when Andrew Lord tallied his twelfth goal of the year from Billy Ryan. The Cyclones would bounce back with one of their own at 17:43. Mark Voakes snapped off a shot from the high slot area for his eighth score of the campaign with Jimmy Kilpatrick and Dustin Sproat handing out the assists. The shots favored Cincinnati, 7-2, in the period. The Cyclones had two power play chances to Wheelings one.

There was no scoring in the second period, but the Nailers had the best chance of the term when a shot clanged off the crossbar behind Cyclones goaltender Jeremy Smith. Wheelings defense in the first 14 minutes was solid, not allowing the Cyclones a single shot on goal. However, the club more than made up for the lost timebeing outshot just 11-10 in the period.

There was no scoring in the third period, as Cincinnati outshot the Nailers, 10-4.

In the overtime, there was no scoring, but Wheeling had the opportunitiesshooting six shots on goal to the Cyclones two. For the game, Cincinnati outshot the Nailers, 29-24. The Cyclones were zero for five on the power play while Wheeling was zero for three.

In the shootout, Wheeling scored three times on four shots from Joey Haddad, Thomas Beauregard and Billy Ryan. Cincinnati got scores from Dustin Sproat and Voakes.

Adam Berkhoel made 28 saves on the Cyclones, to defeat the club for the first time in the regular season since April 5, 2007. Rookie Jeremy Smith stopped 21 shots in the shootout loss, dropping his record to 17-10-2 on the year.

The crowd of 7175 pushed the Cyclones season attendance to 104,604an average of 3607 per game. It was the seventh largest crowd in team history and eighth time this season that Cincinnati has attracted in excess of 5000 for a game. The Cyclones sit 16th in the ECHL in attendance, 25.9 percent ahead of last seasons pace through 29 home games. Cincinnati, which has finished first or second in attendance percentage improvement in each of the prior two seasons, has attracted more fans than it had through 35 games in 2008-09 (through April 3, 2009).

Cincinnati is 35-17-3, while Wheeling is 27-24-4. This was the third game of a five game homestand that will run through February 27. The Cyclones host Wheeling Wednesday (Feb. 24), which is another Wet Wednesday. The game next Friday (Feb. 26) against Charlotte is Twister Goalie Bobblehead and the final game before the club departs for a six game road trip that will keep the squad away from U.S. Bank Arena until Thursday, March 18.

Cincinnati leads the North Division with 73 points. Kalamazoo is second with 61, while Toledo is third at 60 and Wheeling rounds out the division with 58 points. The Cyclones have led the North Division for 46 days this season and for 307 days over the past three-plus seasons.

Tickets for the 2009-10 Cincinnati Cyclones season are now on sale. The Cyclones Sales Department can be reached at 513-421-PUCK, extension 3. Selected Friday night games are carried on 1530-AM Homer, while all 72 regular season games can be heard on the clubs website at: www.cycloneshockey.com. The next game on 1530 Homer will come next Friday (February 26), when the Cyclones host Charlotte at 7:30pm.

Well that did not go so well. For some reason ( no excuses here ) the ice not drying fast enough after resurfacing. Could it have been the dye they used to make ice pink?It appeared to me that it took nearly half a period before it finailly dryed. I hope the auction goes well. Good night evryone.

Actually a pretty crappy game by both teams in my opinion. I think Wheeling had 2 shots in the first period and we went over 12 minutes in the 2nd without one.

The ice has been horrible the past two nights. The puck is bouncing alot as well. Could be a problem with the Zamboni.

Yes, I grew up playing hockey... In Alabama.

Someone had mentioned in a previous post that the ice was (could be) substandard for the last two nights. I wasn't in attendence last night but tonight the ice seemed to be slower and choppier than usual. I seemed to remember that we were faster than Wheeling and that wasn't the case tonight. Hopefully its the pink's fault and we can go back to the better ice.

And at least we got a point.

Kilpatricks went for 1000. Storks was lowest for 400
Twister 900
Jozsa 850
Coghlan 800
Weber Lacroix and Benson 750
The others were between 600-700 with only 2 players at 500.

This ice was indeed terrible the past few nights. Tonight it could have certainly had something to do with the coloring of the ice. I'm no expert but a guy who maintains the ice at a local rink told me that when there are large temperature changes (it hit the mid 40's were I live today and it's been in the low 30's the past few days) it can reek havoc on the ice and even if he cranked up the compressors and the AC it would usually take 12 to 24 hours for the ice to improve. I can remember a game I played at sports plus a year or so back on a rather mild January day. I noticed it was colder than usual in the rink but the ice was still a soupy mess for all of the 1st period so there could be some truth in the guys explanation. If it is true, and you put the warm temperature together with the 7175 in attendance (all those people warm the building up) it could lead to some bad ice conditions. If Guido is creeping around these boards at all maybe he can shed some light on the subject.

I don't know what was the matter with the Cyclones last night---they looked very sluggish and just didn't seem to have it together at all. Wheeling looked like they were playing harder on offense than we were, although it was a heck of a defensive game.

I had $400 burning a hole in my pocket for that jersey auction, because I was determined to finally get my wife a pink game worn that she's been wanting forever. The past couple auctions it seemed $400 was the average price that the game worns were going for (throwback night and military appreciation). They were averaging $600 last night, but we bit the bullet and got one, even though it hurt the pocketbook a little.

Jason was one of the last jerseys auction and maybe the people who really wanted to take home a jersey were bidding higher to get one.

Jozsa has played here when hes not been in the AHL. Think 30 games or so in a Cyclones uniform.

Last night was about the only time I have ever seen one of Chuck's teams ever knocked off their game. Give Wheeling credit--they arrived at the cyclone players the same time the puck did. Cyclones need some space to operate and Wheeling took that space away both weekend games. Wheeling has made a big move in recent months and now I can see why. Will be interesting to see how the Cyclones respond to this strategy Wed night.

Nice job by Kyle Bushee playing cheap d-man and slamming himself into the net with Cyclones pressuring in the offensive zone. Two nights in a row for this guy. Play some real defense like the rest of your team there, Kyle!

Our power play is terrible and has been all season. All the time we get 5 on 3 and almost never capitalize.

All I can say is the Cyclones were quite lucky to get three points in the last two games the way they've played. Maybe the ice had something to do with the way the puck bounced, but it didn't have anything to do with what seemed to be a very lackluster performance. Wheeling didn't seem to be at their best either, but they still played more like a team whose backs are against the wall.

With the Cyclones sitting in first place, for the most part they are going to get the best the other teams in our division have to offer over the rest of the season.

...And on the eighth day, GOD created the Cyclones!

I apologize for not being so clear... I love the cyclones, I do. but Jozsa kills me. In my opinion Jozsa is not up to par, that's why I questioned the 850, because killer deserves the 1000 put up for his but Jozsa doesn't seem to play with heart and i don't see how his went so high (it must've been that his was near the end)... although it was for a good cause so...

I Cannot tell someone how to spend their money, but $1000 dollars? I bought the Pink in the Rink jersey worn by Daigneault several years ago for my Wife and spent $500 and felt that was alot. Add into his auto being....well less than physician like and cannot fathom $1000 or even $600 for one of our midlevel players. I get it's for charity and a fantastic cause......

Lastly,A quick search of medigray jerseys and one can find midlevel NHLers game worns for half of what kill'ers went for......amazing
