Mayer Recalled By Montreal, Van Guilder Assigned By Milwaukee

Date: 02/23/2010

CINCINNATI, Ohio - The Cincinnati Cyclones, ECHL affiliate of the NHL's Montreal Canadiens and Nashville Predators, announced this afternoon that goaltender Robert Mayer has been recalled and re-assigned to the Montreal Canadiens (NHL) and that they have received forward Mark Van Guilder from the Milwaukee Admirals (AHL).

Mayer, 20, is in his rookie season and has already spent time this season with Montreal's AHL affiliate, the Hamilton Bulldogs. Robert has played in 25 games with Cincinnati this season and has a 16-7-1 record with a pair of shutouts. His 2.68 goals against average is fourth best among ECHL goaltenders. During February, Robert has a 4-0-1 with a 1.75 goals against averagesecond-best in the league during the month.

Van Guilder, 25, is in his second professional season, having appeared in 21 games with Milwaukee this year. He has collected four assists with the Admirals. Last season, Mark appeared in 65 games with the Cyclones, leading the team with 26 goals and 44 assists for 70 points. Three of his goals were overtime scores. This season, he has played eight games with the Cyclones, notching a goal and adding three assists for four points.

The six-foot-two, 205 pound native of Roseville, MN, played four seasons at Notre Dame, earning four varsity letters and racking up 42 goals and 56 assists for 98 points in 163 games. Van Guilder and current Cyclone Brock Sheahan played for a Fighting Irish squad that advanced to the National Championship game in 2007-08.

In other Cyclones news, forward Brett Robinson was placed on the seven day injured reserve list.

The Cyclones host the Wheeling Nailers tomorrow night (7:30pm) on another Wet Wednesday with one dollar Pabst Blue Ribbon and Miller High Life cans. Friday night (Feb. 26), the Charlotte Checkers are in on Twister Goalie Bobblehead Night.

Tickets for the 2009-10 Cincinnati Cyclones season are now on sale. The Cyclones Sales Department can be reached at 513-421-PUCK, extension 3. The Cyclones have selected Friday night games carried on ESPN 1530 and all contests aired on their website at www.cycloneshockey.com. The next game carried on ESPN 1530 will be Friday, February 26 at 7:30pm against Charlotte.

Robert will most likely be back when the NHL break ends at the conclusion of the Olympics. Even so it will be a good opportunity to face NHLers in practice and have a dedicated goalie coach for a change.

Can only help him (and us) in the long run.

Even if its just for the break and he doesn't see an NHL game, talk about getting great experience. I bet he was excited to hear that news.

Hopefully Smith holds up well against Wheeling tomorrow night.

Yep. The only reason they would do this is for coaching and practice opportunies. Obviously they are looking at him.

Look for Carey Price to be the goalie Montreal trades, as new GM Pierre Gauthier has a thing for European-born players.

You'll be fine. The Nailers have Teslak in goal while Berkhoel nurses an injury. If Smith can hold Wheeling to less than double figures, it's two points for the Cyclones.

Smith is an outstanding goalie. We all know this. He made the American Conference All-Star Team. Jeremy is awesome- all this does is take away the best goalie tandem in the ECHL but that just means Smith is going to play more so I think we are fine.

NHL teams resumed practice today and with Halak in the Olympics and Hamilton playing a schedule full of games, the Habs need another goalie for practice. Practicing against NHL talent should only make Robbie better and hopefully it will slow things down for him when he gets back here.

Smith is an excellent goalie as well and I think the team is just as strong regardless of who is in net. The part that concerns me is, just as cyclonesfan7180 pointed out, breaking up the tandem. This call up is most likely for practice reasons so Jeremy won't have to carry the load for more than the next 3 to 4 games. However, it's well documented that MTL probably wants to move a goalie by the March 3rd trade deadline. Regardless of whether it's Price or Halak that get's moved it means Robbie get's recalled to Hamilton, unless there is another goalie involved in the deal. In 06-07 Cedrick just flat ran out of gas against Dayton in the playoffs after carrying the load down the stretch. This team is much better than the 06-07 team and I'd hate to see their chances get squelched do to goalie fatigue.

elvis77 i believe that you are right- Carey Price is probably going to get moved. Which as you pointed out keeps Mayer in Hamilton or Milwaukee. But I think Jeremy can handle the load. After all didn't Cedrick play everyday pretty much in 06-07? I'm not sure this roster is quite as good as 06-07 but they are playing better hockey because of the defense

Cincinnati:
Delete Lee Lansdowne, G released as emergency backup goaltender

I'd take this as a good sign that Mayer will be back tomorrow night.

I think they have to add and delete an EBUG every game. So don't count on it just yet.
