Van Guilder and Voakes Lead Cyclones to Victory, 3-2

Date: 02/25/2010

CINCINNATI Cincinnati Cyclones forward Mark Van Guilder netted a pair of goalsincluding the game winner at 1:20 of the thirdand rookie Mark Voakes added the other in a 3-2 triumph over the Wheeling Nailers on Wednesday night at U.S. Bank Arena. Rookie Jeremy Smith turned aside 29 shots, while Jimmy Kilpatrick, Brett Motherwell and Dustin Sproat each had two point evenings.

The Cyclones have been exceptional in the month of February, posting a 9-0-2 mark this season. Cincinnati has outscored its opponents, 37-19, during this run. The squad had a one point lead in the North Division on February 1 and has now extended that to ten.

The Cyclones netted the first two goals of the contest to build a 2-0 lead at the first intermission. Rookie Mark Voakes took a pass in the slot to rifle home his eighth goal of the campaign. Dustin Sproat flipped the puck out of the left corner to Voakes for the opening marker. Brett Motherwell tallied the second assist at 13:56. Less than two minutes later at 15:14, Mark Van Guilder, just assigned from Milwaukee, sniped his second goal of the season. Motherwell held the puck at the left point against the half wall and sent it ahead to Jimmy Kilpatrick, who located Van Guilder on the left wing side. The shots favored Wheeling, 11-0, in the frame.

Wheeling scored twice in the second period to knot the scores at two each. Billy Ryan netted his first score of the season on the power play at 3:54. Cleve Kinley and Kevin Schmidt had the assists. Andrew Lord leveled the scores with his 13th score at 6:55 from former Cyclone Thomas Beauregard and Ryan. The shots again favored the Nailers, 13-9, in the term.

The story of the period was Cincinnati goaltender Jeremy Smith, who faced three breakaway scoring chances in the final four and a half minutes of the period. He was able to turn aside two of the chances and got help from a backchecking forward with the other opportunity. The effort kept the game tied heading into the third.

Van Guilder scored the game winner at 1:20 of the third period. Slipping a shot past Nailers netminder Michael Lee Teslak for the tally. Dustin Sproat and Kilpatrick had the assists. Cincinnati won the shots battle, 15-2, that allowed the Cyclones to win the game total at 32-26.

Jeremy Smith picked up his 18th win of the year, stopping 24 shots. Michael Lee Teslak absorbed the defeat, his 14th, with a 29 save effort. Cincinnati was one for six on the power play, while Wheeling was one for four with the man-advantage.

Cincinnati is 36-17-3, while Wheeling is 27-26-4. Up next for the Cyclones is a Friday (Feb. 26) game against Charlotte that is Twister Goalie Bobblehead and the final home game before the club departs for a six game road trip that will keep the squad away from U.S. Bank Arena until Thursday, March 18. The week ends with a trip to Johnstown on Saturday (Feb. 27) at 7:05pm.

Cincinnati leads the North Division with 75 points. Kalamazoo is second with 63, while Toledo is third at 60 and Wheeling rounds out the division with 58 points. The Cyclones have led the North Division for 50 days this season and for 311 days over the past three-plus seasons.

Tickets for the 2009-10 Cincinnati Cyclones season are now on sale. The Cyclones Sales Department can be reached at 513-421-PUCK, extension 3. Selected Friday night games are carried on 1530-AM Homer, while all 72 regular season games can be heard on the clubs website at: www.cycloneshockey.com. The next game on 1530 ESPN 1530 will come Friday (February 26), when the Cyclones host Charlotte at 7:30pm

Does anyone else think the game where they hide Twister under ice cream or whatever and you have to follow him and guess which one he's under is rigged?? Everyone in my group last night followed him and said he was under three, everyone sitting around us said he was under three, and even the guy guessing thought he was under three... But nope, he was under two. It's fixed! Just thought that was kinda funny.

What a sleeper of a hockey game. The lack of physical play and the worst power play I have ever seen in USBA forced me to leave with 5 minutes left in the game. I know that the game has changed but it is on the verge of becoming boring. Why sit both Morehouse and Benson?

If we run into a team that is skilled and play a physical style of hockey, we have no chance!!!

We won this game and have the most wins in the entire league, tied for second most points in the league.

Also, how many enforcers were there on the Kelly Cup Championship team?

This team does not have even close to the amount of talent that they Kelly Cup team had. Chuck has done an incredible job getting these guys to produce.

That being said, the power play continues to be nothing short of dreadful while the style of hockey...simply puts me to sleep! It's nothing more than an opinion from a fan that prefers a more physical style of hockey. Has nothing to do with enforcers as I am speaking about simply finishing checks and standing people up at the blue line. Other teams should fear going into the corners. I saw one good hit last night. I believe that it was Motherwell that hammered his guy into the boards which took him out of the play. One pass later we had a goal.

I acknoweldge that the game has changed - not for the better in my opinion. I happen to believe that the decline in physical play at all levels of hockey is a major contributing factor to the declines in ratings (NHL) and attendance (All minor leagues). Generally speaking, the casual fan in the US does not have an appreciation for the skilled player. Go to any arena and look at the jerseys that the fans in crowd are wearing. 9 out of 10 times it will be the enforcers name on the back. There are obvoiusly exceptions like Crosby and Ovechkin.

It is what it is....boring if you ask me!

The clones just dont have any skilled PP guys. Its really unfortunate Beauregard didnt want to come back here, as he was tops in the league when he was here, and is again among the leaders with Wheeling.

I dont know why it is they have such ineptitude on the power play, but at least they are trying to mix it up and use different combinations. We need another Desharnais type passer who knows how to find people and dish up easy power play goals.

Luckily for them, they are quite good a killing off penalties so its not as bad as it could be. Also they are +19 in the third period and only +8 and +6 in the first and second, so goes to show they are deeper/better conditioned than most teams. Only Elmira and SC are better in the 3rd.

Hopefully chuck can find a reliable (20%) power play line by the playoffs. As much as I like the Ads, maybe they wont make it / go far in the playoffs and send us some help.

I have $10 that says Morehouse and Benson weren't dressed because there simply wasn't room on the bench due to the AHL players that have been sent down for playing time.
When you are the affiliate of multiple higher level teams, as the Cyclones are, you take the good with the bad.

And "physical play" is often more a function of the team(s) energy on any given night than what players are on the bench. Sometimes it is there, sometimes it isn't.

It really is THAT simple.

In terms of the power play... No. Its not great. Hasn't been all year.

Yes, I grew up playing hockey... In Alabama.

I was really impressed with Van even though he is now an affiliate player. All of these movements are because of the Olympics most likely but looking at the roster their are only 5 affiliated players and 4 are from Milwaukee, just think if we still had Leitch, Cashman, Mueller and McLean if we didnt have much player movement we would be the Milwaukee Admirals of Cincinnati in the ECHL. Send downs are part of the game, you just get players a much deserved game off while you have the extra bodies and you rotate.

Good point cyclonehole. We did have 2 players that would drop the gloves then (Avery Wilson and Jimmy Bonneau) but wouldn't call them enforcers.

What you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

ZINGER!!!!!

Going a step further, Avery Wilson didn't make the Playoff Roster and Jimmy Bonneau didn't play much down the stretch.
