CINCINNATI, Ohio - Charlotte Checkers goaltender Ryan Munce stopped all 25 shots he faced in posting a 3-0 shutout victory over the Cincinnati Cyclones. Kenny Roche had a goal and an assist for the winners.
With the defeat, the Cyclones and Checkers will go to a seventh game in the best of seven series tomorrow night to decide the winner of this American Conference Semifinals. The victor will face the Reading Royals in the American Conference Finals. The best of seven series will start this Friday either at Cincinnati or Charlotte.
Charlotte scored the lone goal of the first period when Kenny Roche notched his third goal of the playoffs at 2:24, redirecting a pass at the top of the goal crease. Trevor Hendrikx stole a Cincinnati outlet pass and fired it from the right wing side to Roche. The Cyclones, who have not led a game after a period of play in the playoffs, outshot the Checkers12-5in the period.
A late power play goal in the second period put the Checkers up by two. Randy Rowe tipped a shot in from the low shot area on a shot from the point for his first of the postseason. Julien Brouillette fired the shot from the point that was tipped by Rowe. Aaron Slattengren had the other assist. The Checkers had three second period power play chances for 3:07. The club with the best home power play percentage in the postseason (33.3 percent), also outshot Cincinnati, 13-7, in the stanza.
The Checkers would close out the scoring 13:46 into the final period on Andrew Carroll's fourth score of the playoffs. Brouillette and Roche had the assists. Charlotte won the third period shots fight, 10-6, and for the game claimed a 28-25 advantage.
Charlotte was one-for-six on the power play, while Cincinnati was scoreless in five chances. Ryan Munce stopped 25 shots for the win, while Jerry Smith turned aside 25 shots in the loss.
Charlotte won the South Division title and American Conference regular season championship by posting a 43-21-8 record. The Checkers were a conference-best 25-8-3 in games at the Time Warner Cable Arena. Charlotte was the number one seed in the conference playoffs and knocked out Toledo in the opening round of the postseason in four games. Cincinnati finished as runner-up in the North Division with a 44-25-3 record and upended the fourth-seeded and defending Kelly Cup champion South Carolina Stingrays in five games. The Cyclones are the fifth-seeded team in these American Conference playoffs. Cincinnati is the only team in the ECHL to have advanced to the second round of the Kelly Cup playoffs in each of the past four seasons.

If I'm correct, the Cyclones haven't been able to win an even numbered game in either of the play off series so far, winning all the odd numbered games! Hopefully, that trend will continue tonight, since this is their "LAST" chance in this series with Charlotte. Hopefully we will have something to cheer about after tonight!!!! |
