Melt down?

The game I just watched wasn't a "melt down," it was one team completely dominating the other one. In every way.

I keep telling you guys, the Cyclones do not match up well with this team. If we don't get some weak goalie play or some mistakes the Cyclones won't win this series. They got shoved around badly tonight.

About the only high points of the game were Smith and DelMonte taking up for his captain IMMEDIATELY. THATS how its done.

On another note, #44 is a punk. He hides from Benson but will get all up in the face of anyone that weighs less than 190 all night long. Thats NOT how its done.

"I keep telling you guys, the Cyclones do not match up well with this team. If we don't get some weak goalie play or some mistakes the Cyclones won't win this series."

So you're saying the Cyclones can't win without the Chokers messing up and giving it to the Clones. Nice job supporting or believing in the Cyclones.

What about erasing a 2-goal deficit TWICE in the first game to win and the 9-5 whooping Wednesday?
What about the fact that the Chokers are getting away with A LOT and that factors into the play?

Is anyone here aware that a couple Charlotte guys waited in the parking lot for Benson and took their pathetic BS off the ice?
These things are part of what's going on in this series against these punks! They suck and we can take them as long as we put the puck on net more and gain better control on the offensive zone... we're doing well in our end and the neutral zone, just need to fix the offensive end. Jeremy is doing great despite the many goals allowed, we just need to give him a break with more time in their end!

So far, two back and forth series.....hopefully they pull this one out and Smith can hang in and don't wear out. It would be really good for a chance to move up showing he can be an everyday goalie.

I personally think Charlotte sucks and Munce is no better than a roller hockey goalie down at your local roller rink. That game was way out of control in the first period and Charlotte's game plan has been the same everytime I've seen these guys play (including the season games) - go out and try to goon it up and draw a penalty so they can get a powerplay goal or two, sit back and play defense and get out of town.

I have absolutely no respect for this team at all. I can't say one good thing about the Checkers.

Exactly.
Thats nothing new, and its working. As long as its working, Charlotte would be idiots to quit doing it.

It doesn't matter how much you hate/disrespect Charlotte or like the Cyclones. It doesn't matter what you think about style of play.

What matters is that it is playoff hockey and playoff hockey can be rough and nasty. Charlotte is bigger, rougher and nastier right now and IT IS WORKING.
The "blowout" game was largely on piss poor goalie play for Charlotte. Sure, the Cyclones won, but I doubt Webber was pleased with his team giving up that many shots and 5 goals in that game. Friday's game wasn't dissimilar except that Munce didn't have his head up his ass Friday. Jeremy played VERY well or Friday would have been an ugly blowout in the other direction. The 'clones are lucky it was "only" 4-1.

And that "roller hockey" goaltender only gave up one last night, on a penalty shot. Fact is that he doesn't have to play all that well if the 'clones struggle all night to get it out of their own zone.

The 'clones are in trouble right now. We are struggling with their forecheck, their backcheck and their willingness to goon it up and draw retaliation penalties. Thats just playoff hockey.
We probably won't be getting any help from above, so we need to adjust and start being the instigators instead of the reactors. We need to stop trying to just skate around their forecheck (it ain't working) and we need to start pounding the boards. Thats a tough order for the 'clones because thats not how this team is built.
Like I said... Not a good matchup. This is THE worst playoff draw we could have gotten.

Its not that we can't win the series. We can.
But we likely won't if we keep playing like we are right now. You can't put fate completely in the hands of the goaltenders EVERY night.

We are getting outshot, outhit, and if I could find a time of possession stat I'd bet thats very skewed to Charlotte as well. Thats not a recipe for winning a playoff series, especially when you add the retaliation penalties we keep getting sucked into.

Right about now I'm wishing we had Morehouse out there. He's way outsized, but he can bring the nasty. We need that pretty bad at this point. Last night was painful to watch for me. I felt like the home team was getting bullied in their own back yard and couldn't do anything about it.

My opinion. Yours may vary.

This is an ahl team the cyclones are playing right now so a victory in the series would pretty much be an upset.

Nothing like this happend last night!! the wife and i were out there waiting on Jamie Coghlan and we seen Hans Benson come out walk down said a few thing to some guy and then he got in his car and left. I don't know what you seen or where u were to see what you said but it didnt happend. For one nothing like that could go on bc usba has their staff out there making ppl stand across the street and i think they would have had Cincinnati police down there fast if this would have went on. Most of the other teams players come out and are on their cell phones talking or they get right on the bus or come stand over and look at the river. So I call bull**** on this one!!! sorry

Nice reply Catch 22. I agree. This is playoff hockey. Charlotte plays a rough game but the penalty calls have been fair for the most part. Easy to blame the refs and the dirty play of the opposition but the problem is with the match up of styles.
The key to their success has been the same as with Toledo during the year in my opinion: their ability to forecheck and keep us tied up in our zone with lots of turnovers. Leads to lots of shots by them and by the time we get out of the zone we need a line change and just chip it in which leads to only a few shots for us. We led the league in shots differential during the year with a Plus 7. The last three games we have been outshot 111-68 or a minus 14 per game!!!.

Yep.

You can't win if you have to dump and change damned near every time you finally manage to get out of your zone.

Sorry, ClonesFanNKY, but you can call BS all you want on that one. You don't know what you're talking about. Benson got jumped in CHARLOTTE. Don't believe me? Ask him while you're out there waiting... and stop assuming such judgement on here, doesn't look good:)

Please try not to be an idiot.

SOME of us actually understand the game.

And some people think that every call against the home team is wrong, the ref always hates "our guy" (insert Benson, Morehouse, Johnson, whoever), and the good guys only get their asses kicked because something unfair happened somewhere.

If you want to be in that latter group... More power to you. Have fun. I guess you probably see yourself as a great "fan," and you may be, but I sure as hell don't want to actually discuss the game of hockey with you.

I'm as big a 'clones supporter as anyone here, probably moreso than most. We have season tickets, buy jersey's at auction, yada yada yada... But I've also spent a great deal of my life around hockey, and understand that sometimes when the good guys get their asses kicked... They plain old got their asses kicked. Plain and simple. And yes, sometimes you can get your ass kicked and still win, but you sure as hell don't want to rely on that system.

I'll promise you this... If Munce was our goalie and Smith played for Charlotte this series would already be waaayyyy OVER. With the exception of goal, the Cyclones are getting steadily outplayed by Charlotte in just about every facet of the game. But sometimes a hot goalie is all you need (thankfully) to survive.
But just remember that this works both ways. You can die by the goalie just as easily as you can live by the goalie.

In closing, I simply don't believe that mindlessly drinking the home team Kool Aide or blaming everything on the ref is a requirement for being a fan. I think a real fan, one that really understands what they are looking at, can sometimes shrug and accept that the good guys are taking a beating.
Maybe I'm in the minority. I probably am.

PS - If there was a time of possession in the offensive zone stat for this series (if there is I can't find it) I'm betting it'd be frightening for the 'clones. I'll also betcha Chuck knows what it is, and is working his ass off on it. The last game was much better than Friday night (which was a horror show), but it still needs work. The Charlotte forecheck is KILLING us.

Not so much the forecheck but winning the battles in the offensive zone is what hurts this team against Charlotte.

Its both. Its basically just physicality in general.

The big issue Friday was with the Charlotte forecheck and consistently not being able to get out of their zone. Often, when they finally did, they were gassed and just dumped the puck and went for a change. That was a big part of the lack of offense.

Just to be clear, I'm not picking at the boys or suggesting a lack of effort. The problem is that they aren't built to bang. Charlotte is bigger and more physical yet skates well enough that we just can't skate around their checking.
Again... Bad matchup.
I think we can win this series, but I promise that we'll be tired and banged up if we do.

Well the boys are doing all they can do with what they have. i think most of us here realize they are outmatched in physical play. But I think we are playing well enough with who we have. Doing what we have to do to win these games. That's all it boils down to. I hate dissecting this game with numbers because sometimes thats all it is when you get down to it. Some of us just want to go down to the game and be "homers" for a few hours. A lot of us "know" the game but we really could care less. It's OUR team out there. I'll argue calls just like our own players do. Cheer and have fun. After all, it IS minor league hockey.
