CINCINNATI, Ohio - The Cincinnati Cyclones used a goal and two assists from Brett Robinson, a pair of goals from captain Barret Ehgoetz and a 14 save effort in relief from Jeremy Smith to take a 6-3 win over the Reading Royals on Wednesday night at U.S. Bank Arena. The win was the third in a row for the Cyclones in this best of seven series. Cincinnati looks now to become the sixth team in pro hockey history to rally from a three games to none deficit to win a best of seven series.
With the victory, the Cyclones have created a game seven 'winner-take-all' contest tomorrow night at 7:30pm at U.S. Bank Arena. The Cyclones are in the American Conference Finals, a series that the club has advanced into three consecutive seasonsjoining Greensboro (1989-91) and Alaska (2004-06) as ECHL teams to accomplish this. The winner of this series will play the winner of the National Conference Finals (where Idaho currently leads Stockton, three games to two) for the Kelly Cup. Tickets for game seven are available through Ticketmaster right now and will be available at the U.S. Bank Arena Box Office starting at 10am tomorrow morning. The game will be a Wet Wednesday promotion with one dollar Pabst Blue Ribbon and Miller High Life being the specials.
This was the fifth time in the Kelly Cup playoffs that the Cyclones won a game when a loss would end their season. In elimination games over the four seasons under Weber, Cincinnati is 8-2.
Reading scored the first two goals of the game, as Ryan Cruthers netted his eighth of the playoffs at 3:06 on the power play from Aaron Brockelhurst and Ben Gordon. Four minutes later, at 7:07, Marc Cavosie's seventh goal from Greg Scott and Gavin Morgan extended the lead to two.
Cincinnati would get on the board at 8:51, when during a five-on-three power play, Barret Ehgoetz would ram home his seventh goal of the playoffs. Reid Cashman rifled a shot from the center point that got through traffic and rang off the crossbar. Ehgoetz grabbed the loose puck at the bottom of the right circle and found the opening for the score. Mark Van Guilder had the second assist. It was the first power play goal Reading allowed in 23 chances in seven road games in the postseason. With a four-on-four situation happening for a 1:12 stretchCincinnati scored twice for a 3-2 lead. Dustin Sproat netted his seventh score at 10:06 from Mathieu Aubin and Jason Jozsa. Ehgoetz picked up his second of the period and eighth of the postseason at 10:26, tallying a score as he worked from the right corner to give Cincinnati the lead. Brett Robinson and Kevin Roeder netted the assists. The Royals would get a late goal from Daniel Steiner at 18:29, his fifth of the playoffs to tie the game at three each. Scott and Stefano Giliati had the assists. The shots favored Cincinnati, 13-7, in the period.
The Cyclones would score both goals of the second period to build a 5-3 lead. Rookie Will Ortiz fired a shot from the right slot area, after Robinson circled the net and flipped it in front. Ortiz rocketed the puck past Matt Dalton's right leg for his first professional goal at 5:38. Cashman added the second assist. Robinson would get a tally of his own less than two minutes lateras Ortiz slid the puck to him in the high slot. Robinson's seventh goal of the postseason came at 7:29. The shots on goal favored Cincinnati, 11-4, in the frame.
The final goal of the game would come with 2.4 seconds remaining, as Sproat fired a puck into the empty Reading net to close the scoring. It was his second of the night and eighth of the playoffs. Maxime Lacroix had the assist on the score. The Royals outshot Cincinnati, 10-9, in the gamebut the Cyclones won the shots battle, 33-21.
Jeremy Smith collected his ninth victory of the playoffsstopping all 14 shots he faced in relief over the final two periods. Robert Mayer started for Cincinnati, but yielded the net after the first period with a four save effort. Matt Dalton absorbed the loss, turning away all 27 shots he faced. The Cyclones went one-for-five on the power play, while Reading scored once in three tries.
With the game seven tomorrow night, it will be the third time in the postseason that Cincinnati has gone the full extent of a playoff series. The club won a best of five over defending Kelly Cup champion South Carolina in the opening round, knocked off American Conference regular season champion Charlotte in the second round and will play the seventh game in this series Wednesday. The Cyclones with a win in the USA Collision Centers postseason run tomorrow night would clinch their second trip to the Kelly Cup Finals.
The last time a team rallied from a three games to none deficit in a series to win was the IHL's Orlando Solar Bears during 1999. The club rallied to the Detroit Vipers in the seventh game in double overtime in the Motor City. One of the front office employees in the Orlando offices was Chuck Weberthe Cyclones Head Coach nowwho would enter into the coaching profession the next season.
The Cyclones posted a 44-25-3 record in the regular season and entered the postseason as the fifth placed team in the American Conference. Cincinnati upset fourth-seeded and defending Kelly Cup champion South Carolina in the opening round. The best of five series went the full five conteststhe last three being decided in overtime, all at Charleston. In the semifinals, the Cyclones went a full seven games before knocking off Charlottethe regular season American Conference champion. This is Cincinnati's fourth trip to the conference finals, the club has won one of the other three visits.
The Royals turned in a 37-29-6 record to finish in seventh place in the American Conference standings. Reading upended North Division champion Kalamazoo in five games and then swept sixth-seeded Florida in four games. This is the club's second trip to the conference finals-having lost to Florida in its other trip in 2005.
Tickets for the 2010-11 Cincinnati Cyclones season are now on sale, as well as for tomorrow night's game seven of the American Conference Finals round. The Cyclones Sales Department can be reached at 513-421-PUCK, extension 3. All road Kelly Cup playoff games will be carried on ESPN 1530 and on the club's website at: www.cycloneshockey.com.

Another nasty game, starting during the warmup. Loved it!
Had Mayer not struggled early, it would have been another blowout. Dalton doesn't even look like the same guy from games 1 and 2, now leaving rebounds laying all over the place.
I'm amazed at how the Cyclones keep losing players (tonight the bench was short Del Monte, Pierce, Kilpatrick, Motherwell, and Krantz was dressed but I'm pretty sure he never took a shift) and keep pressing on. Great play by the goalies and excellent coaching along with some of the guys REALLY stepping up. Our Dmen logged a crap ton of minutes tonight and stayed strong.
Regardless of what happens Wednesday night these guys can be proud.
Reading looks to be frustrated and having issues maintaining their composure. Momentum is definately on the side of the home team, and if we can stay out of the box and get another strong performance from Jeremy we're likely going to the finals. But we've GOT to keep Cruthers, Gordon and Labelle off the power play.
BTW - I'm clueless as to why Benson got tossed near the end. Clearly he was defending his goalie, which is typically given a good bit of leeway by refs. I can only assume the ref was trying to keep things from escalating to the brawl stage and figured sending a couple of guys to the showers was a good step.
BTW2 - Reading's 3rd line is struggling with the speed of Robinson and Ortiz, and I doubt they are going to break up their top 2 lines to try to help defend. Watch this closely Wednesday.

I dont like to think and look ahead, but I dont see how the Cyclones wont be playing in Idaho in a few days. Reading has lost their composure and have no momentum and I dont see how thats going to change in less than 24 hours. When you let drunken idiots standing behind glass trash talk you and you respond to it you clearly have no focus on the game. Reading is more concerned with talking crap to the Cyclones and fans and taking cheap shots than they are with winning the series. Sarauer running Smith over with 5 minutes left was just ridiculous. Lose the series with a little class. There's no need to intentionally try to injure a goalie just because your're pissed that you choked and your season is gonna be over.
The game was total domination for the Cyclones. If Mayer doesnt give up 2 soft goals its a 5-1 game. Will Ortiz played an unbelievable game. I think he's quickly becoming a fan favorite. How about Barret's second goal? He 5-holed the d-man at the blue line then uses a burst of speed to get around him and get to the net then scores as he's laying on the ice. I didnt know he could score flashy goals like that.
I cant wait for game 7 and seeing Reading finish off the biggest choke job in ECHL history.
BTW, I wouldnt mind seeing someone give a nice 2 handed slash to #5 Fletcher. With a team full of jacknuts he may be the worst. |

Reading's lack of composure is astonishing. After the third Cyclone goal (scored in about a 2 minute span) one of the Reading players (couldn't see his number) was just screaming at his teammates. Reading coach Larry Courville looked like a lost puppy. He was reduced-literally-to scratching his head. The Royals seem to think that shooting the Cyclone bench icy stares constitutes winning hockey. It's almost as if the entire Reading team feels the series slipping away and aren't able to do anything about it.
I wonder what Kilpatrick did? Whatever it was (it wasn't "playing outside the team concept" lol), it really significantly violated Weber's "code". I can't recall a team in any sport benching one of its stars for 3 straight elimination games. I guess its fair to assume that Weber has his code of conduct and he won't bend it for anyone. I still think it would be nice if he bent it on Wednesday .
Robinson's goal was a thing of beauty. The toe drag and the dekes (on both the defenseman and the goalie) were just too cool. Ehgoetz also had a beaut.
Whodathunk just one week ago that a trip to the finals would be 50/50 probability just one week later? Wow. Can't wait until 7:30!!

I've been one to take shots at the referees, so here is a thanks to them for keeping control. Early in the game the message was sent a repeat of game 5 was not going to happen. If we have the same tonight, Aubin and McKenzie better lighten up with the mouth towards the refs or we will be facing shot-handed time. The "diving" call in the first was the change of the game. Reading fell apart and 3 quick goals were scored by us. Great move by Weber. Mayer was the right choice for last night and the hook was the right move. Tonight I go with Smith, but the same hook if he falters. If we win tonight, the team with the most games (19) in the playoffs will play the team with the least-Idaho (10). One thing about the matchup, all three series for us have been against teams just like Idaho. |

Looks like 2 refs tonight...
Jean Hebert (27), Referee Keith Kaval (20), Referee Mathieu Chenier (71), Linesman Paul Reid (97), Linesman |
What you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

Great game. Really showed me once again how much heart is in this team coming from two goals down early on. Astute observation about the dive call. From 0=2 with a penalty kill to 1-2 after a power play.HUGE call. I think Reading also blew several 2-0 leads to K-Zoo.
Just hope the Clones play with the same discipline tonight and stay out of the box. Five on five we are on a roll. Benson didn't get tossed last night. Had a five minute major inside five minutes to play in a period so they automatically go to the dressing room. As long as Dalton doesn't turn it around again to his early form I like our chances but it is just one game and anything can happen.

As I said a few times before, this time last week, I didn't think the Clones stood a ghosts chance in he--, the way they were playing!! Now after 6 games and a very impressive last 3 games, the way the boys are playing, they can beat anybody! With Kilpatrick benched, and all the injuries, everyone Coach Weber puts in is stepping up and doing their share! It's great to see the new boys (Ortiz, Heidinger) making a great contribution as well! Now if the boys all continue to play like the last 3 games, the is no reason to think they won't take game 7 and go from there against Idaho! As stated that Idaho is just like all the other teams we have faced, the boys have proven that they are up to anyone! What they may lack in talent is more than made up for in raw grit and determanation! Tell a buddy, bring a friend, and lets pack USBA tonight to cheer our Cyclones to victory |

HRC, during the interview Hammer did with Coach Weber the other night, Hammer asked him about Kilpatrick being a healthy scratch. Coach told him J.K. had been "going out on his own" to much and not playing with the team, thus the not playing with the team concept.
Great game last night! I've sen twice as many people at games and not be as loud as that crowd got. And I believe between the crowd and the Cyclones 3 quick-goal burst, Reading was lost and frustrated. Everyone did a great job of getting under their skin and helping them to lost focus.
Dalton looks like he is running out of gas big time. If we can get a couple quick ones on him tonight and not let him get in a rhythm, I like our chances even more. |
...And on the eighth day, GOD created the Cyclones! |

You look at Dalton and what you see is what Smith would look like without the breather of game 3 1/3 to 4 and game 5 to 6 1/3 ! I think more mental fatigue than physical wear down. Remember the mini melt- down even for Cedrich in the semis when Max bailed us out. Ortiz and Heidinger have really given us fresh legs to keep the pace up. At this point I leave Del Monte deactivated for tonight and if Kilpatrick is ready to play- his fresh legs could really be a help. My MVP for this series is Josza. His defense and Starling like play has really been the difference. |

Benson got a 10 and a 2 for roughing.
Before you go putting any weight on how many playoff goals Idaho has, look at how many games they have played. Ooops.
Personally I'd like to see Killer back out there and "Elbowz" McKenzie spectating. Ian took two penalties last night and could have easily been given two more. Weber needs to make him practice with his elbows duct taped to his rib cage. For some reason he can't seem to learn that he's so big that if he brings them up at all he's getting most ECHL guys in the head. |

Your right 22-my mistake--misconduct not major. Either way though that is why he was asked to leave the ice. Was responding to your question as to why he was "tossed". Thought you meant why was he ejected. Hard to believe that there have been only seven times in pro hockey that a team has come back from 0-3. Hopefully we will see #8 tonight. |

What's with 2 refs tonight? If they're gonna go with 1 ref throughout the season and playoffs then stick with using 1 ref. Why decide to roll out a 2nd ref just for a game 7? |

The league likely views the press over the brawl Sunday as a bad thing, and last night's game was also extremely chippy. The decision to use 2 refs doesn't surprise me at all. I also wouldn't be surprised if one of them is on the ice during warmups tonight after what happened last night. I think I've seen that exactly once before.
All in all I think 2 refs plays to the Cyclones advantage right now. They were more disciplined (except Ian) than Reading last night and doing far less crap behind the play (which is what that 2nd ref is going to be watching).
As long as they stay the course and keep emotions under control 2 refs is a very good thing for the good guys IMO.

Not sure if both refs will work. Seems strange they would use two when they aren't use to it. More importantly the teams aren't use to it and it can change the whole approach. Took the NHL a long time to get it to work right. Still problems with a ref right there letting something go and the other ref far away calling it.
Will be interesting to see but another scenario is that the 2nd ref was assigned in case the first one gets hurt. I doubt they would want the game finished by two linesmen with one acting as the ref as they would do normally. We will see. Have also seen refs out there for warmups. Wouldn't be surprised also to see Reading tone it down a bit tonight. The intimidation strategy hasn't worked and I think got them away from their game plan. Would love just a hard hitting clean game that the ref or refs can let them play. Hope the weather improves or it could keep the walk up sales down considerably.
