Clearly some of you don't know what a "hockey town" is.

So I'll help... If this was a "Hockey Town" the Cyclones being in the playoffs would be #1 on the things to do list. The games would be packed regardless of the night or if the Reds were playing.

I think games 1 and 3 with Reading both had less than 1500 people. I actually felt bad for the boys out there on the ice. When you can hear a baby crying at a playoff hockey game... That ain't a hockey town.

Yes, attendance is better and yes these upcoming games will have great attendance due to it being the finals and media saturation and no reds games. Thats great.
But if this was a hockey town, that stuff wouldn't matter.

Sorry guys. Its just the truth.

First off, game 3 was in Reading and the attendance for games 1 & 2 at USBA was 2541 and 3482
I guess Cincy isn't a hockey town per se, but your recollection of the crowds is "WAY OFF" by about one to two thousand!!!!!!!!

He most likely meant 1080 and 1353 for 1 and 2 vs South Carolina. As they've gone deeper, more people show up. Hopefully the upcoming home games all have 5k+, absolutely no reason they cant with no interference from the Reds on any of those days.

All Hail the all-knowing almighty pessimist Catch22... who seems to enjoy projecting his know-it-all arguments and impuning his pessimism upon the Clones and their fans more than he seems to enjoy hockey.

If this is no hockey town (and not by your definition, which seems to say only Montreal and Detroit and such are 'real' hockey towns) then you are no hockey fan!
'Hockey fans aren't like other fans' and Catch22 is not living up to the M O of a hockey fan.

So we're no hockey town and your no hockey fan... there, are you happy? Do you feel right? Geez! You only come on here to try to correct people and suggest things like 'Charlotte is a better team' even though they NEVER led that series... yeah, you're a REAL fan alright.

lol I will clear this up this confusion quite easily!! lol
Cincinnati is a 'BALL' town. If not played with some kind of ball, interest is lacking....but if you ask around you will also find that Cincinnati is best known as a 'BANDWAGON' Town!

By this I mean that the average sport fan can/will support a WINNING TEAM! Fan support grows as a team wins, no matter the sport! Even media support sometimes can and does fall into this catagory.

With Hockey this is very much the case!! But as each season comes and goes, the FACT remains that the CYCLONES fan base has continued to grow. So What if the 'Bandwagon' fans show up late during the playoffs and we have great crowds! If just a small portion become regular hockey fans, then support for hockey in this city will continue to grow!

I always tell people, granted somewhat tongue in cheek that Cincinnati is most definitely a hockey town. After all Cincinnati has more titles in hockey than any other major sport, this would make 8. About 5 hours now, getting really fired up

Whatever.
I meant whichever games had about 1000 people at them. S.C. or Charlotte maybe. I don't know, we've been to all of them and they are running together.

Regardless, and you can nitpick if you want, 1000 people at a playoff hockey game is embarrassing.
It just is.
Don't make excuses.
It just is.

There seems to actually be about 1000 REAL hockey fans in this town. That is people that proactively follow the team, go to games regardless of weather or Reds schedules, and just generally support hockey in Cincinnati. Everyone else is there for cheap beer, promotions, or hopping on a bandwagon.

AND THATS FINE!!!!
No problem with that at all. The 1000 people that proactively support the team simply aren't enough to keep hockey here by themselves. WE NEED THOSE OTHER FOLKS!!!

The point is, don't get all excited and get ahead of yourself. This city is nowhere NEAR being able to support an AHL franchise and frankly I'd hate to see anyone try. We barely support an ECHL team unless there is cheap beer or they're playing for a championship.
So lets keep it all in perspective. Please.

Appreciate what you have. Keep the cart behind the horse. All that sort of stuff.

Oh, and stop getting your panties in a bunch because I say this isn't a hockey town. ITS NOT, but guess what??? If you are on this board, you are very likely one of the few actual hockey fans that live here.

Bottom line is that the Cyclones are the most successful sports team in this city over the past 3 years but aren't even in the top 5 in general sports interest in the region. If you go to a Friday night game in the fall you'll notice that the 'clones attendance is even hurt by High School football.

Thats reality, and as a person who's #1 sports interest is hockey it makes me sad, but its just a reality.

Now... Back to cheering on the team for another Cup.
And hopefully a few more in the future!

Uh huh. Sure.
I want to talk hockey with that guy.

Thanks for the usual contribution though. I needed some internet silly crap to laugh at tonight.

PS - Sorry guys, this ain't a hockey town. Its just not. Yes, attendance is up now because its the finals, getting alot of press, and the Reds aren't interfering. But don't forget games 1 and 2 with Reading were embarassing from an attendance standpoint.

Lets be happy with what we have, keep trying our best to spread the word, and not worry about AHL or parking or whatever. Great hockey... $5 parking... $12 tickets... Banners in the rafters.
All is well.

Good Post.

I do disagree with the assessment of this not being a hockey town. The Cyclones averaged an honest 3887 with only 17 of their 36 home dates being the desired Friday or Saturday nights.

It's not a major league hockey town-that's for certain. But given that the attendance levels are now approaching an honest 4000 per game, it's pretty hard not to qualify the city as a viable minor league hockey town. Being a distant fourth, fifth or whatever in some poll about relative popularity is irrelevant. If the team is viable, then that's all that is needed.

The early round attendance had a lot to do with having virtually no time to promote the games. Plus, it's the nature of the beast to have lower playoff attendance than regular season attendance. The Cyclones have averaged more during the playoffs than the regular season the past two seasons and may yet do so again this year. That, however, is an anomaly in the world of minor league hockey.

The current Cyclones management have done a marvelous job overcoming the errors of their predecessors in the market. They have turned Cincinnati into a market which will pay a reasonable price for a hockey ticket instead of one which rarely attended unless given a comped or deeply discounted ticket.

Nonetheless, it's Kelly Cup time. The failures of the past hockey teams are irrelevant and have been for 4 years now. Hockey is back on the map and here to stay. I look forward to a 3-0 series lead in about 4 1/2 hours

I agree with BannerLady, if the Reds or Bengals lose you see the public drop them as quick as they jumped on, but you never see that with the Cyclones, one because they have good tickets, and two the Cyclones have had two losing seasons in around 18 years of hockey so everybody stays on the bandwagon when it comes to the only non ball sport in Cincinnati

I just put the Cyclones to 23%. Not bad numbers for a minor league team in a "major league city" I would say. The Reds - well it's not the All Star Break so they haven't gotten to their annual implosion yet. The Bungles - No way, no how , not now not ever. In fact I turned down free 50 yard line tickets a few years ago when they made one of their few playoff appearences. I can't even watch football anymore because it is just too darn slow.

I actually have the Reds implosion starting June 18 when they fly to the left coast. Then, again in August when it actually matters coming down the stretch to lose....well about every game from the 17th-23rd.......again during a left coast road stretch.

The Reds will remain in contention all season because of their starting pitching. Three of their five starters are young guys that are going to keep getting better. They also get Edinson Volquez back in August. If the five starters stay healthy, he'll go into the bullpen and upgrade that area.

Sorry, Scuba. The Reds are going to be good this year and for the next several years with the young pitching and talent they have at all levels in the organization.

Not really fair to pick on the Reds. They're playing exciting baseball right now, and beating some good teams. If they implode, so be it, but right now they're the hottest thing in the MLB. You don't have to be a Reds hater to be a Cyclones fan.

Personally, I'd pick a Cyclones game over a baseball game, but I try to go to Opening Day and I take in 6 or 7 Reds games every year. Both experiences are great for different reasons.

Not a Reds hater, occasionally being "hot" during a very, very long season has no bearing on what they will or will not become at the end of the year.

As for Donnie "I know everything about everything" Hockey, having talent at all levels has zilch, nada, nothing if the Reds mismanage the team, as the Reds management seems to prove year after year. The Reds also have quite a history with prospects that somehow, just don't work out. lastly are you satisfied with the Reds being "just Good"?

Scuba, the Reds have 3 players left from 2006 on the big league roster. They have a proven winner in Walt Jocketty as the GM. They have different people in key positions in scouting and player development. They have drafted well going back to when Dan O'Brien was the GM. It's a different era now. Jim Bowden isn't running the show anymore. The mess he created has been cleaned up and better days are ahead for the Reds and their fans.
