Greenville Names Dean Stork Head Coach

Former Cyclones Player and Coach Accepts Top Job with Team In South Carolina

CINCINNATI, Ohio - The Cincinnati Cyclones of the ECHL learned this afternoon that Dean Stork has been named Head Coach of the Greenville Road Warriors (ECHL) hockey team. Stork served as assistant coach with the Cyclones for the past four years. The Cyclones are the ECHL affiliate of the NHL's Montreal Canadiens and Nashville Predators.

Stork takes over the Greenville team which will begin play at the Bi-Lo Center this fall. The club had previously been a charter member of the ECHLoperating as the Johnstown Chiefs. The Chiefs missed the playoffs the last two seasons, finishing the 2009-10 season with an 18-43-11 record and fourth place finish in the East Division. Ironically, the last time this squad made the playoffsit was swept by the Cyclones during the 2008 Kelly Cup championship run.

Stork, 34, served as assistant coach with the Cyclones the past four seasons, helping guide the club to a 177-92-19 record (.648 winning percentage). The Cyclones won the 2008 and 2010 Kelly Cup championships, won back-to-back North Division regular season and playoff titles (2008 and 2009) and advanced to the American Conference Finals three straight years (2008, 2009 and 2010). The 2006-07 edition of the club came up a win short of winning the divisional regular season, division playoff championship and advancing to the conference finals as well.

Dean's primary responsibility was with the Cyclones defensive unit, which limited opponents to a 2.80 goals against average during his tenuresecond-best in the ECHL during that time (Idaho led at 2.67). The 178 goals allowed in 2007-08 were the fewest in team history and one goal more than Las Vegas surrendered to lead the league. The 200 goals allowed last season were fewest in the American Conference and second-fewest in the league.

"We are excited for Dean Stork that he has accepted this opportunity in Greenville," Cyclones Head Coach Chuck Weber said. "He has done a great job assisting me in developing our players and bringing a winning hockey environment to Cincinnati. We wish him nothing but the best."

Stork was named as assistant coach of the Cincinnati Cyclones in June 2006, ending his seven-year professional playing career to concentrate on working behind the bench. His playing career began in 1999-2000 with Hampton Roads (ECHL), where he played for ECHL Hall of Fame coach John Brophy. Dean spent the next three seasons (2000-03) as a member of the Arkansas Riverblades, where also served as an assistant captain.

The Cyclones organization got its first glimpse of Stork in 2003-04, when he was the captain of the club. He then went to Texas (ECHL), where he was the assistant captain and was traded late in the season (2004-05) to Columbiawhere he was a part of the East Division's championship team.

Born in Edmonton, AlbertaDean grew up in Penticton, British Columbia. Stork played collegiately at the University of Massachusetts, where he played more than 100 games in three seasons (1996-99) with the Minutemen. Graduating with a degree in Sport Management, Dean held the record for goals in a season by a defenseman (nine). He was also a member of the Hockey East Honor Roll squad. He signed a two-year contract with the Washington Capitals out of college.

Stork holds the ECHL record for most game sevens participated in. He has been involved in nine of the 21 in league history. Dean had a 3-1 record as a player and is 4-1 as a coach for a total record of 7-2 in these decisive games.

Tickets for the 2010-11 Cincinnati Cyclones season are now on sale. The Cyclones Sales Department can be reached at 513-421-PUCK, extension 3. The latest news and information on the team can be found at: www.cycloneshockey.com.

You have to wonder what, if anything, this means as to what Coach Weber is going to do. One would think if he was leaving, Coach Stork would have been first in line to succeed him.

On the other hand, did he just have to strike while the fire was hot and take the first head coaching opportunity that presented itself.

I reckon time will soon tell...

...And on the eighth day, GOD created the Cyclones!

Congrats to Dean. It will be odd seeing him on the visitor bench.

Now.. the big question.. who replaces Dean? I think Zinger would be a option

Congratulations to Stork!!

He's earned this promotion. He'll have Neil Smith as an owner. Smith coached Johnstown for the last part of their lost (and last) season. Smith was also the GM for the NY Rangers when they won their last Stanley Cup in 1994. Smith will be an interesting owner to work for no doubt.

I'm sure he'll be up to the task. Best of luck to Stork and many thanks for your great work in Cincinnati.

Congratulations to Coach Stork and the best of success to him (except when he is playing us). Maybe we'll see them in the playoffs.
