I would like to thank the Cyclones Organization for allowing the kids from NKYHA on the ice during the first intermission. I have seen this countless times in the past during the games but as a parent of one of the kids that skated last night I can't tell you how much my son enjoyed being on the same ice as "The big boys" as he calls them. He is 4 and in his first season of instructional hockey. This is something he will never forget I'm sure. As we exited the locker room to go back up to the game he seen several of the players in the tunnel getting ready for the second period, one of them waved at him and told him good job. You couldn't wipe that smile off his face for anything in the world. My thanks again to the Cyclones and my hope is that he will get to do this again sometime in the future.

My son skated during the 2nd intermission and had a blast as well. Not sure if he saw any players but anytime they get to skate on the "big ice" they have a blast. Our parents loved watching your little guys and remembering when our kids were in an instructional league. Your little one did a great job!! |

I'll confess to be mildly irritated at the youth running long and cutting my Zam time, BUT, then I remembered that night, in 1977, when it was Riverfront Coliseum, when I was a 9 year old, watching the youth skate during intermission at a Stingers game and I absolutely HAD to play.
I wouldn't let up and my mom, a single mother, set me up for a summer clinic at Northland Ice Center and enrolled me in the Northern Kentucky program the next winter. At the time the ice rink in No. Ky. was the beloved Dixie Gardens Ice Bowl and the youth league was Northern Kentucky Junior Hockey Association. They finally changed it since it interfered with the Junior Hockey level of play.
Ahh, memories. May your son have many more from the great sport of hockey!
And for the record, my mild irritation was not at the youth or parents - I just like to do my best every cut and when the promos run long it causes me to have to take short cuts. But, that's the nature of the game and the promos are good for hockey and good for the team. Not a rant, just an explanation.
Again, I'm glad your son enjoyed it and may he love the sport for the rest of his life! |

Dixie Gardens Ice Bowl ... ahh yes, I remember it well. I liked the ice better there than I did the other rinks (Northland, Golden Skates, Hamilton) that were in the area back then.

Yep. At least mid-November through mid-February it was definitely the best. It could be a little soft in the fall and spring if the weather was mild.
I learned all my Zamboni and ice care skills there. |

Sinbinman - very cool, was a long time ago (least it seems like a long time ago lol) when my son got to do an intermission skate and he loved it. NKYHA does great job with the kids (spent many a day/night there over the years).
Great to hear about "the big boys" recognizing him... |
