David Desharnais is the American Hockey Leagues Reebok/Player of the Week.
The Bulldogs centre, who has had a hot hand literally since the start of the season, only played two games this past week because of the leagues Christmas break but still scored twice and assisted on three others to take over top spot in the scoring race.
Great to see Desharnais leads the AHL in scoring, but keep in mind it is very tough -- extremely tough -- to lead the AHL in scoring if you're called up and spend more than two weeks in the NHL, as so many of the top young players in the AHL do. Unless Montreal has a series of injuries that depletes its lineup or he gets injured, Desharnais won't miss any Bulldogs games.
BTW ... where does Desharnais rank among AHL players in points per game average among players that have played in 10-or-more games? Because of the number of games many players in the AHL miss due to being called up (or injured), the points per game average provides a much better assessment of who the top point-producers in the AHL are rather than just looking at the current league leader board.
On another note, I watched Desjardins take the ice for the warmup in last night's Lightning vs. Bruins game at the St. Pete Times Forum. Dan Ellis didn't play great and has been inconsistent all season so maybe I'll get to see Desjardins make his NHL debut tomorrow night against Montreal.
