CINCINNATI, Ohio - The Wheeling Nailers (20-16-0-2) scored six unanswered goals, including three in the third period, to earn a 7-1 win over the Cincinnati Cyclones (16-15-5-2) at U.S. Bank Arena on Tuesday night.
Wheeling's Nick Petersen found the net for the eighth time in eight games against Cincinnati when he sent a shot past Chet Pickard (L, 18, 4-8-2-0) at the 4:54 mark, making it 1-0 Nailers. However, just 32 seconds later, a Scott Reynolds shot from behind the net banked off of a Nailer defender and rolled behind goalie Peter Delmas (W, 29 saves, 2-0-0-0) to knot the score. But after a turnover at the Cincinnati blue line, Wheeling forward Kelly Miller picked up the loose puck and wristed home the go-ahead goal at 15:47 to put his team up 2-1 after 20 minutes.
The Nailers padded their lead midway through the second frame when, at the 8:11 mark, Joey Haddad sent a backhanded shot over the shoulder of Pickard and into the net for a 3-1 lead. With less than two minutes left in the frame, Alex Smigelski tipped home a David Urquhart blast to extend Wheeling's lead to 4-1 at the second intermission.
In the third period, the Nailers began to pour it on; with just 0:51 gone in the final stanza, Ben Street tapped in a goal to make it 5-1. Then, goals from Michael Bedard and Petersen at 4:22 and 12:29 respectively capped the scoring sending the Wheeling to a 7-1 win.
The Cyclones Radio Network Three Stars of the Game are as follows: 1. Nick Petersen (2 goals for Wheeling) 2. Ben Street (1 goal, 1 assist for Wheeling 3. Mikael Bedard (1 goal, 2 assists for Wheeling)
The Cyclones will continue their swing through the North Division on Friday night when they travel to face the Kalamazoo Wings at 7:30pm. Hear all the action LIVE on MAX-FM starting at 7:15pm.
The defending Kelly Cup Champions will return to U.S. Bank Arena this Saturday, January 22, when they welcome in the Wings for a 7:30pm opening face-off. Extremely glad we didn't have tickets tonight. I'm pretty damned tired of watching the home team take a beating.
From the game sheet it looks like it got nasty. I'm guessing I'm not the only one tired of losing.
Any insight on why Pickard didn't get pulled? Looks like a terrible performance (on paper).

Oh, and it's great that the team finally gets regular coverage on local newscasts, even with some highlights sometimes.
Not so great when those highlights are the bad guys winning 7-1.

He probably didn't get pulled because the 4rth WHL goal (which gave them a 4-1 lead) didn't happen until there was only a minute left in the 2nd period. The 5th goal (less than a minute into the 3rd) wasn't his fault, so there was no reason to pull him then.
The good news is that the offense was in pretty high gear for the first 25 minutes or so. Minnella hit a post and several others had really good scoring opportunities. But when your goalie can't stop a beach ball...........
Clackson showed some grit by getting into a few fights. Aubin even fought. Olson openly taunted the Wheeling bench. He toyed with Street and no one on Wheeling stood up for him. He scares the piss out of the Nailers.
There. I tried to make lemonade out of lemons. And I have failed. But at least I tried

Where to start ? I left 5 minutes into the 3rd period with one word to describe how I felt- NUMB ! This team looks the same as it did back in November with the same basic cast of underachievers. If I don't see a change in roster in the next two weeks, next year's season tickets may just turn into buy as needed. I would prefer to see a bunch of kids playing their hearts out and losing over the "veterans" we have now just skating around. I will be there Saturday with one change- not a shirt, jersey or jacket with the Cyclones name on it. If I had one I would wear a Kalamazoo jersey just to maybe break the USBA curse this team has. |

Well, in the past 3 games we've been blown out twice. But we've also had multiple fights, misconducts and suspensions.
The boys look to be as frustrated as we are. HOPEFULLY that will manifest itself into something positive. Or maybe the whole season is falling apart right this minute. We'll see.

Remember the playoffs last year and what Weber did to Reynolds. This is the kind of message that needs sending right now. I would have no problem seeing Aubin sit out the next 3 games as a message to the vets on this team. ECHL is a developmental league and if these veterans don't want to step up and play, find some kids that do. Foolish penalties and constant yapping at the refs have put us in position of negative from the refs. |

That was an awful performance. Something needs to happen with the D corps. On virtually every goal, the Wheeling players were unchecked in front of the net. In two instances, the Cyclones D men backed all the way into the zone, allowing the Wheeling players to pick their spots for a shot. The D needs to work on its gap control and know when to step up on an advancing forward.
Despite the bad play last night, they recently swept one of the best teams in the conference. So there may be some hope, but they definitely have their work cut out for them. |

Thank God I didn't go last night. I started to with a couple other people and I told them I wasn't since the Cyclones can play at home against Wheeling without getting clobbered.
This is getting real old, real fast. |
...And on the eighth day, GOD created the Cyclones! |

That 'Olson' chant near the end of the 3rd period was a thing of beauty. |

This team needs to latch onto something that works and gives them energy and try to ride it for the rest of the season.
If it's Olsen beating the crap out of the conference... So be it. Maybe it'll cultivate a rough and tough persona. I'll take anything that gets wins or at least makes the games worth watching right about now.
I prefer wins, but "Lose and Bruise" is fun to watch.

| Embarassing as the score was, it was more embarassing watching their answer to being down 5-1 be to start fighting everyone.Nothing against being physical and fighting but do it to either send a message or to respond, not because you are embarassed by your own awful play. The last eight HOME games since Bakersfield we have scored a grand total of 13 goals in regulation (1.625 per game) while giving up 31 (3.875). Now we acquire a forward from Trenton who has scored no goals this year. This is all making the between period contests the most entertaining part of the evening |
