Great point Slapshot. Correct me if Im wrong, but I think that is exactly what happened in the Hunter/Motherwell trade. I dont think Motherwell has skated a minute with Utah.
There are others on the team that I would have traded before I would have let Minella go.
Maybe it was beyond Skaldes control? |

| Could be that since Sam and Minella were in a trade for a guy with an AHL/NHL contract the ECHL team involved just gets screwd and there really is nothing Skalde can do. Good question for the next coachs show. What will Minella refusing to go do if anything? |

| Minella was one of the few reasons to get excited about going to a game...gave 100% on a team that generally was motoring along @50-60%...I think he will be missed big time...in exchange for a question mark in terms of attitude and true scoing ability... |

Everyone has been asking for some changes in the offense and yet when changes are made, they dont like it. Neither of the Cyclone young players are under contract next year so this is not giving up prospects. While I admire the energy both bring, they were both non drafted for a reason while what we got was a young fairly high draft choice from Pittsburgh which is pretty good team in their drafting record with quality players in Pitts, Wilkes Barrie, and Wheeling. They still own his rights and contract--he was just assigned here much the same way Florida assigned Clackson to Greenville. He could be back in Wheeling next year and the Cyclones will be free to try and sign the other two
Last night was another example of lots of shots and 2 or less goals. We have an over abundance of play makers and no natural goal scorers. This is an attempt to get a goal scorer. Will it work? I don't know but at least they are trying something. Wheeling needs numbers up front we need goal scoring. Both had to give up something they didn't want to in order to get what thy needed. Unusual that the teams are in the same division. |

I totally agree that we need a natural goal scorer. Badly.
My problems are this:
1. I'm not totally convinced CPZ is that guy. I guess we'll find out. 2. I HATE that we had to give up our most reliable energy guy (who can also score on occassion) to get him. This team can't afford to give up much energy. 3. How long before CPZ is sitting on his ass in Milwaukee. The Admirals love to do that.
BUT, We need something, and maybe this is it. I don't think it is, but hopefully I'm wrong.

If Nashville or Milwaulkee wanted to make a trade involving D'Agostino and Minella, they would have to sign them to contracts first. I'm afraid this one is all Skalde.

According to Shawn Rine, beat writer for the Nailers, the Pittsburgh Penguins traded Pierro-Zabotel to Nashville who assigned him here. The Preds own his rights so over they summer they may do what they want with him. He may stay in the organization or they may release him. Since he is on an NHL multi-way contract the Cyclones will not have ability to "protect" him of "qualify" him for next season. On the other hand, both D'Agostino and Minella could have been, so in a way they were prospects. While they weren't exactly tearing up the score sheet they were stable dependable ECHL level players.
The questions are, how is a "skill" guy going to fit in on a grinding type team and can he create the offense or are his numbers inflated by playing with the likes of Ben Street and Nick Peterson? |

| Thanks for the answer elvis! Seems this is going to be one of those wait and see type deals. Cant really judge a guy without seeing him play on the team. That being said Im still a little skeptical. |

| BIt confused with the Nashville theory Elvis . ECHL website has Zabotel being recalled by WB and the AHL website then has Pitts assigning him to Cincinnati. As he was on assignment to Wheeling on his Pitts contract, they have to recall him and then re-assign him here. If they had traded him to Nashville, they in turn would have had to assigned him here, In either event, neither of them has any AHL/NHL contract and could be signed by the Cyclones for next year while Zabotel is under the control of Pitts/Nashville. |

I'm very mixed on this trade. CPZ offers an immediate prospect of more scoring, but I hate giving up both Minnella and D'Agostino.
Minnella has a lot to like about him. He's got size, he skates well, he has a good shot, he can deliver a good hit and doesn't shy away from being hit. He has an excellent work ethic as well. He hasn't put up big offensive numbers, but I won't be surprised when he starts doing so.
D'Agostino was a very good 10th forward for us. His nine goals came in limited ice time. He provided good energy and understands (unlike the majority of our forwards) that goals are a direct consequence of shooting. Sam wasn't much of a physical player, but for an extra forward, he contributed a remarkable amount of scoring punch.
With the goaltending situation as shaky as it is, I understand the need for Skalde to roll the dice. He's giving up two very solid, yet unspectacular players for a guy who could be our "go to guy" which is something this low scoring Cyclones team has been lacking. It's a trade which I wish wouldn't have been dictated by short term necessity. But necessity it is. When a team can't score enough goals and has trouble finishing strong scoring chances, it almost has to acquire a proven goal scorer when he becomes available.
Best of luck to Minnella and D'Agostino. They were two of the brighter lights of a fairly dark season to date. |

| Speaking of goaltending--my understanding is that Chevie is probably gone for the year due to an injury to Markstrom and he and Plante will share duties in Rochester. Anyone confirm if that is the case? If it is,that leaves Chet for the rest of the year alone which, even if he were playing well, is too much of a workload. Any ideas of where to look? |

@DBC, IT seems like info is still coming out about how this deal got done. It appears that initial reports that the deal was made through Pittsburgh and Nashville were incorrect. Regardless, neither Sam nor D'Agostino can be touched by the Cyclones next summer should Wheeling choose to "protect" and "qualify" them. On August 1st they will become free agents but good recruiting would have the free agent portion of the roster filling up by then (regardless of when the organization announces signings). This means the Cyclones gave up 2 solid players in order to get one whose impact is based on a lot of hope.
What's being missed in this deal is that the problem with this years team has less to do with the offense and more to do with the defense. When I did the math on Monday this year team was scoring less than half a goal less per game than last years while giving up almost .700 per game more. Bringing in more offense will only work if they can tighten up the defensive zone play as well. Personally, that is where I would have started but I also think that is more of a systems approach rather than a personnel one. |

| Pierro-Zabotel may not play tonight. Let's not forget it is pink in rink night, and they may have not gotten a jersey ready for him. But who knows. |
