CINCINNATI, Ohio - Defenseman T.J. Fast buried a point blast in overtime to send the Cincinnati Cyclones (24-21-6-3) to a thrilling 4-3 win over the Greenville Road Warriors (33-20-2-1) in front of 5,570 at U.S. Bank Arena on Friday night. It was Cincinnati's seventh victory in the extra session and its 10th come-from behind win of the season.
Both teams went scoreless in the opening stanza despite several quality offensive chances and a bunch of physical play. Cincinnati opened the scoring midway through the second period when Mathieu Aubin tipped home a Casey Pierro-Zabotel wrist shot for his 17th goal of the year. However, Greenville answered back when Road Warriors defenseman Wes Cunningham sent home a shot from the left point past Cyclones netminder Brian Foster (W, 18 saves, 2-1-0) to knot the score at one through 40 minutes.
Early in the third, Kevin Roeder slammed home a rebound past Road Warriors goalie Cameron Talbot (L, 33 saves, 1-1-0) for his third goal of the season and pushed the Cyclones ahead by a 2-1. Unfortunately, Greenville answered back with a pair of goals from Shane Harper and Brandon Wong just 46 seconds apart to take a late 3-2 lead with under four minutes to play. In the final minute, Cincinnati pulled Foster for an extra attacker and it paid off; Barret Ehgoetz took a shot from just outside the right circle and Dustin Sproat tipped it in to even the score with only 26 seconds remaining in regulation. For the second straight game, the Cyclones would decide the game in overtime.
In the extra session, Wes Cunningham took an interference penalty in front of his own net setting up a four-on-three Cyclones power play. Just seconds later, Mathieu Aubin fed T.J. Fast at the blue line who ripped home the game-winning tally at the 2:07 mark to give Cincinnati the 4-3 win.
The Cyclones Radio Network Three Stars of the Game are as follows: 1. T.J. Fast (Game-winning goal in overtime for Cincinnati, one assist) 2. Kevin Roeder (1 goal, 1 assist for Cincinnati) 3. Wes Cunningham (1 goal, 1 assist for Greenville) With the victory tonight behind them, Cincinnati now sets its sights again on the Kalamazoo Wings who they'll face tomorrow night at Wings Stadium. Hear all the action on the Cyclones Radio Network beginning at 7:15pm.
The defending Kelly Cup Champions will return to U.S. Bank Arena next Wednesday, March 2, when they welcome in the Reading Royals for the final time in 2010-11. It will also be the final Wet Wednesday of the season with $1 PBR and Miller High Life flowing all night long. 2010-11 single game and discounted group tickets are available now. 2011-12 season tickets go on sale to the general public on March 5. The most exciting game I've seen all season.
We have it won. No, we're going to throw up on ourselves. We score for the first time (that I can remember) with an extra attacker and we actually win in OT at home.
Skalde's doing a masterful job with a roster that has 4 players who aren't even serviceable ECHLers. His team is in the playoff hunt despite him inheriting a mediocre roster with poor goaltending and an abundance of season-ending injuries.
Keep it up coach!

| What happened to Watson? He sat in the middle of the bench for the whole game. Anybody see what he did to get the pine bench ride last night? |

What a great win! Hopefully such a game will help glue this "new" team together and solidify the locker room. Takes a lot to come back the way they did. They dug deep.
Not to rain on the parade but this is the third straight game we were leading half way through the third period and have given up the tying or go ahead goal in the last seven minutes of regulation. Yes they came back to win two of them in OT/SO but hopefully this is just a statistical blip and not a sign of anything. In the two Kelly Cup years I could sit back a bit in the last ten minutes when we were nursing a small lead. This year I find myself sitting on the edge of my chair very nervous.
Wheeling continues their drop and K-Zoo is now leading the division and has the #3 seed in conference. Even though they have destroyed us this year I feel sorry for the Wheeling team and their fans. They were a solid team playing strong hockey until all the call ups happened.
Problem for us is that we have played all but one of our games against them already while they were strong, and now that they are a much weaker team they have three games left with Toledo and four against K-Zoo. |
