Rumors circulating that Liambas is quiting his Canadian college team, after yet another suspension, and looking to sign with the Cyclones. Given his history, I really don't want him as a member of the Clones.

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sports/hockey/suspended-liambas-hopes-to-play-hockey-in-the-echl/article1927196/

Couple quotes from that article:
quote:
University hockey player Mike Liambas, recently suspended two games after hitting an opponent in the head with a fist and driving him into the ice, is looking for a new place to play the East Coast Hockey League. Sources have confirmed the freshman University of British Columbia forward has told school officials he is leaving and hopes to sign with the ECHLs Cincinnati Cyclones.

quote:
Liambas, from Woodbridge, Ont., has previously been suspended for his on-ice actions in other leagues. He was ordered to sit out the bulk of the 2009-2010 Ontario Hockey League season after a dangerous hit that fractured the skull of Ben Fanelli. Liambas also drew a five-game suspension in the International Hockey League for a hit that ruptured the spleen of an opponent.

Not Liambas, but we did sign a new D-man out of college:

It's only a matter of time. He's played under Skalde before in Bloomington. In conversations with Skalde, he likes the kid saying he's great in the locker room and will stick up for his team mates.

I'm not a proponent of "goon" hockey but let's face it, without Olson this team is a bit on the soft side right now. Bringing in a kid that will throw his weight around and get in a fight or two so guys like Sproat, Hudson and Lehman don't have to isn't a bad thing.

A youtube search for him yields a highlight reel of big hits, some are cheap, but most are just big, hard hits in my eyes.

If the kid is as Skalde describes him then I'm all for giving him a chance, the team needs it right now. If he can make some big hits and keep the opposition from taking liberties with our skilled guys, he could be a great addition. Should his play become detrimental to the teams success then he's got to go.

We'll have agree to disagree. In my mind, there's big difference between the tough/enforcer type and this guy, and bringing him in is very big risk to the chemistry and the image of this organization. His OHL hit alone should have earned him a lifetime ban, as it is he's already had two additional opportunities to prove the OHL hit was an exception but the behviour hasn't changed. he comes in and does the same type of crap, it's a stain on this organization...one that could hurt attendence...

Would I be reading to much into this if he is signed, to assume that Olson won't be back?

It's hard to say but either way the team need someone to fill that role now.

I won't argue the need, but I find it hard to believe there aren't better options out there than this loser...personally, if he's on the roster I'm not there...

I'm with Fangers. What I see on the YouTube is a collection of cheap shots. The plethora of suspensions speaks for itself. If you want to sign an enforcer, fine, sign an enforcer. Liambas isn't an enforcer, he's a goon who is out to make a name by hurting people who can really play hockey.

I remember Conrad Martin getting is a$$ handed to him at center ice early in the 2006-07 season and almost turning in my tickets at that point. If Cyclones hockey turns into a Steve Martinson type sideshow (Is Mike Sgroi available?) you can count me out.

OLD TIME HOCKEY!!!!! I saw give the kid a chance... Honestly without Olson (or anybody else really) here willing to throw weight around this guy is actually a peice of the puzzle that fits. Teams have been more agressive against the clones because they know nothing will come of it. Put this guy on the ice and it will stop. He has a few black marks on his record yes but the dude knows how to hit and we need somebody like that

old time hockey bar the door, clear the track, ITS ALL OUT WAR!

Have any of you embracing this now THREE TIME LOSER seen any video of his cheap shots? Read any of the stories describing his play? Have a kid who plays?

I highly doubt any will answer Yes to any of them...

And Slapshot - this kid is not old time hockey. Privately, I would bet to a man, the locker room hates guys like him because they know that at any time he can end all that they've worked for because he's a loose cannon...

Funny, this the exact opposite of what Skalde said about the kid when he mentioned him to me. Skalde said he's great in the locker room and guys liked him.

The bottom line is that you have no idea what guys in the room think about another player. Nor do I. I only base my comments on what Skalde has said to me. The team has a need and Liambas has the potential to fill it, do you really think Skalde would bring him in if he is that bad? I'll wait and see should it happen. I'm sure Skalde knows a wee bit more than us.

I do agree that if he becomes a detriment he needs to go. This is something that Skalde obviously has no problem doing. It was said that Clackson was fitting in with the squad and Skalde got him relocated. Skalde brought Chase Watson in and managed to get so far into the doghouse that he got released. I may not always agree with Skalde's coaching philosphies but I don't doubt that he has the best needs of the team in mind when he makes moves regardless of their popularity with the fans.

If most seems to have a negative opinion of him, so will the refs !
Justin Johnson had the rep of being an enforcer/goon. Coach Weber gave
him the chance to be a "player" but that didn't stop the refs from
looking the other way on hits towards him while calling every little
thing he did. This guy sounds like trouble we don't need. Please take
a pass on him.

For those of you who like the idea, ask yourself what you would think and say if K-Zoo or Toledo signed him. My bet is you would be screaming about how he shouldn't be playing and how terrible the team was for signing him. This is about the integrity of the game which has spent years trying to get rid of three time losers like this. Hope the ECHL brass keeps him out of the league.
