Desharnais has been given third line minutes the past couple games, picking up an assist in each contest. However, Friday night against the NY Rangers he looked lost in the defensive zone and was on the ice for three goals-against. Because of the way he played defensively, I expect Canadiens head coach Jacques Martin will drop him back down to the fourth line for the next game.

18:21 TOI 2 assists and a +4 rating today against Minnesota, I think Martin kept him where he was.

That doesn't look like 4th line ice time, expert.

It was a blowout which gave the third and fourth line players more ice time. Let's see how much ice time he gets when the Canadiens aren't up 5-0 less than 30 minutes into the game.

Thursday's game will be interesting-the rematch with Boston. My guess
will be less time for David and more for the physical guys, This in no
way makes DD less a player, just not one for the situation. I expect the
league will be looking very close for retaliation. Boston got away with
the first shot but Montreal will be hammered for theirs.

And therein lies the reason he'll never be a top six forward in the NHL, because he creates unfavorable mismatches. A top six forward can play against the more physical teams like Boston.

I didn't say he can't play against the more physical teams ever, just
not now and not this game. Last I looked, he still is a rookie learning
the NHL level game. This upcoming game against Boston could go many ways.
First,Montreal could choose to retaliate so it will all be physical.Or
Montreal could choose to outplay them and DD could be more the focus. As
for a "Top 6 Forward"-what does that mean? Are you saying top 6 on their
team or top 6 in the league ? As for "unfavorable mismatches", are you
talking his quicker, smaller target to the slower, less agile opponents
then your right-mismatch in his favor !

Wow!!!!. Donnie, we are all humbled that Thee of All Hockey Knowledge would continue to allow the rest of us on this small ECHL non hockey city forum to be the recipients of your valued thoughts. While the rest of us post our uneducated hopes and opinions as Cyclone fans who brave the cold winter weather to support our undeserving team, we are most thankful that we are privy to the undeniable FACTS presented by one a thousand miles away who does not attend the games but still has the charity in his heart to help the rest of us understand our mistaken loyalties. In the words of Tom Thumb, "Thank you sir"

P.S: You are THE ultimate in arrogance.

Thank you "DBC" for stating what I am also tired of. No I am not
perfect and if I state something wrong-let me know. But I am tired
of EVERYTHING I say seems to always be wrong in the mind of "God's
Gift to Hockey"! If calling our "buddy" "God's Gift" gets me banned-
FINE. I always expect a negative to anything I say about Desharnais.
If he rushed into a burning building and saved 10 lives a certain
persons response would blame him for not saving the pet turtle.
Okay I feel better now.

The former ECHL Cyclones great was on the ice for both of Buffalo's goals in the Canadiens' 2-0 loss to the former NHL parent club of the now-defunct Cincinnati Swords.

So now he gets the blame for a last minute-empty net goal. Doesn't Desharnais
play forward and not defenseman?

The fact that Martin put him on the ice in the last minute of a game with huge playoff implications shows me what they think of him, or does He of All Hockey Knowledge (HAHK) think teams usually put fringe players out during that time?

I said he was on the ice for both Buffalo goals. I didn't say he was to blame for either.

Yes, Desharnais plays forward, but forwards are responsible defensively, too. In fact, forwards are more responsible for a lot more goals-against than defensemen are.

Pat Hickey is a well respected hockey columnist for the Montreal Gazette and this is from his Friday column which sounds like it was written for the doubters here. Not bad for someone who has been on the 3rd/4th line

"Pleasantly surprising statistics: Anyone who doubts David Desharnais's ability to play in the NHL should be aware that he is the Canadiens' top-scoring forward in 2011. He has eight goals and 14 assists for 22 points in 36 games"

That was a good write up I must say, Desharnais can play at the NHL level, 22 points in 36 games is more then I thought he would have and should raise more eyebrows over the summer in my opinion because he has shown that his small stature does not matter and he gets the job done, in my opinion. I am not saying 1st or 2nd, but a third line guy and PP guy is where DD is right now.
