2007-08 ECHL MVP, Leading Scorer, and Rookie of the Year and Kelly Cup Champion David Desharnais rookie season in the AHL was quite impressive to say the least.
He finished 3rd in rookie scoring. 446 players in the AHL were considered rookies this season. Not too shabby, eh?
His 58 points (24g34a) ranked 2nd on his team and he only trailed Hamilton's leading scorer by 2 points despite playing 3 less games than the team leader.
He was a co-Rookie of the Year on the Hamilton Bulldogs.
He finished tied for 34th overall in AHL scoring.
His 58 points would have made him the leading scorer for 10 of the 29 teams in the AHL-Albany, Binghampton, Chicago, Lake Erie, Lowell, Manchester, Norfolk, Peoria, Rochester and San Antonio. He would have tied for the leading scorer on Syracuse.
We were indeed fortunate to have the pleasure to watch DD ply his trade for an entire season. His success in the AHL comes as little surprise to those of us who watched him last season.
His performance this season makes it clear that he not only fits in the AHL, but he is among the league's elite. Not bad for a pint-sized kid who wasn't drafted.
Hopefully he'll continue to shine in the post season. He finished the regular season with a flourish scoring 10 points (5g5a) in his last 6 games. He's a certainty to be invited to the Canadiens camp in Septmember and will probably be given a long look by the Montreal brass.
