2008 Kelly Cup MVP Cedric Desjardins closed a very encouraging rookie season in the AHL.
He finished 20th in goals against average among AHL netminders with a very respectable gaa of 2.55. His record was 16-12 with 4 Shutouts. His save percentage was a stellar .919.
Marc Denis, Hamilton's MVP had a gaa of 2.46 and a save percentage of .920. To put that in perspective, long time NHL veteran Denis stopped, on average, one more shot per thousand than rookie Cedric. Pretty heady stuff for a rookie.
Cedrick closed the season in incredible fashion. Over his last 10 starts he had an 8-2 record with 2 shutouts. He had an amazing goals against average of 1.87. His save percentage was an eye-popping .942.
Cedrick was told that he wasn't good enough for top tier Canadian Juniors. He won 1 game and lost 20 or so his first season. He ended up his junior career by winning the Memorial Cup and being named the best goaltender in that tournament. The Memorial Cup is the junior equivalent of the Stanley Cup.
Cedrick was blasted by his coach in his stint last season in Hamilton. He is now coming into his own in the AHL. Montreal goaltending coach Roland Melanson is becoming more impressed with him by the game. Maybe someday he'll wear the crest of le blue, blanc et rouge-a dream come of any French-Canadian kid who plays hockey.
If it happens, it'll be richly deserved by a very nice kid.
