One of my co-workers who lives in the outer Dayton area told me the latest rumour. Seems the Hara Arena group may be thinking of bringing back the "Dayton Gems" name for an IHL (Fort Wayne,Kalamazoo ...) franchise.Sounds like the ECHL group is showing little interest in getting the franchise back up and like us,they only want to go forward if the ECHL franchise is not kicked in. As much as it pains me,have any of the Dayton fans heard anything ? |

Nothing on there but says info coming soon. |
What you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

should the gems return and play in the ihl, it could seriously hurt the bombers chances of returning to the echl. from what i've read the potential ownership group for the gems is completely separate costa papista, the owner of the bombers.
the gems ownership group has to present their case to the ihl on june 15th, it should be known shortly after that if it will happen. the bombers present their case for returning to the echl for the 2010-2011 season on june 25th. (http://www.daytonbombers.com/Announcement.htm?2092)
while the ihl is considered aa hockey, it is not the ihl of old, and personally feel it ranks below the level of hockey played at the echl level. should the gems succeed, it would probably signal the demise of the bombers and a great echl rivalry. if cincinnati couldn't support 2 hockey teams, how could dayton? i'm sure the echl board of governors and brian mckenna while be keeping an eye on this as the deadlines approach. |

They are for real. The phone number for the Gems is 937-275-7777.
They started selling tickets today. The response was good and many Bomber season ticket holders have already signed up for STs for the Gems. One of the local TV stations came to their offices to interview their Director of Sales-Jerrico (Matt) as he was known on this board. Meetings with potential sponsors are beginning to take place. I would expect the Gems to reach the Bombers season ticket total for last season within a month.
The Gems pretty much end any chance of the Bombers returning. The Bombers have been a financial disaster for the better part of a decade. They had ample opportunity to negotiate out of their lease (or just break it) with Nutter and move to Hara. Papista owned the team for five years and he's never had a paid average attendance of even 1500 for a season. Why he didn't make the move to Hara is beyond my comprehension. In any case, he's a nice guy. He just didn't get the job done as an owner. His hopes of raising $1 million through individual $5,000 investment blocks and securing a majority owner were a pipedream before this announcement. Now, it is simply outlandish to believe that anyone would step forth and bankroll a team at the Nutter Center.
Should the IHL itself go belly up (and that is a possibility as Kalamazoo is leaving the league and Flint and Port Huron are ongoing financial disasters), then the ECHL could return to Dayton. Perhaps as the Gems in Hara.
Tickets for the games will be $13, $15 and $17 and parking will be $3.

The IHL is possibly teetering right now. Kalamazoo is ditching the league for ???. Possibly the ECHL. The league (IHL) supposedly needs 6 teams to meet immigration requirements or else they'd only be able to field American players. Strict immigration standards for working hockey players and an open border for Mexican welfare recipients. Such a great country. Yippee.
But, I digress. Should the IHL fall to 5 teams if Flint and/or Port Huron goes under or another team quits the league, then all bets are off concerning the IHL and by implication, the Dayton Gems.
It's a mess right now. The Kalamazoo defection caught everyone by surprise. Except the IHL Commissioner who is also the Kalamazoo President. A major league soap opera it is, folks.
Stay tuned as the saga continues. |

Er, considered AA by whom, other than the sometimes sycophantic Dayton folks who want so badly to join the IHL and possibly the other people already watching it?
I certainly don't root for any city to lose their team, however it might benefit the ECHL to gain a few cities that have long minor league hockey ties. I bet the league would be chomping at the bit to get Ft. Wayne into the mix, and i'd be surprised if they weren't working on getting Kalamazoo if the deal isn't already done. |

| The Bombers are still trying, I think....I received info on putting a down payment on seats for the next year. (bought tickets through a rep and I was in their system) They are trying to get a fan base like the Railraiders tried with a big group of season ticket holders before they make a come back. I think it is a last chance effort for them to return. I hope it goes well, I love to hate them! Good luck Bombers. |

Dayton had trouble fielding 1 team, how can they support 2 next season?
They can't.
I'll be very surprised if the ECHL allows Papista to return in 2010-11. He still hasn't found a majority partner and he had hoped to raise $1 million in $5,000 units (200 units) from his fan base. No mention of any numbers regarding this or the 1,500 season ticket pledges he has said that he needs-I've heard that the Bombers had secured 400. Unless he locates a major investor in the next two weeks (and he's been searching for one for a year), I would expect the ECHL to terminate his franchise on June 26th at the Board of Governor meetings in Las Vegas.
Papista had 5 years to make the Bombers a viable franchise. It's too bad, but the simple fact is that he failed. Not getting out of the Nutter Center and moving to Hara was a huge error, but his failure to learn from the ticket price cutting success of the Cyclones was probably his fatal mistake.
He also continued to comp tickets much like the Ducks and Cyclones did and ended up making the true market value of a hockey ticket in Dayton almost worthless. Much like the Ducks and Cyclones did here.
Thank goodness that Chris Parsons, Kristin Ropp and Ray Harris thought outside the box on ticket pricing or we'd be stick-a-fork-in-us-we're-finished; just like the Bombers unfortunately are.

They're Done:
Dear loyal fans and supporters,
Close to two decades of professional hockey…two Kelly Cup championship appearances…and 13 playoff appearances, not to mention countless memories – I am sad to report that a rich piece of Miami Valley hockey history is coming to an end. Regretfully, I have turned the ECHL’s Dayton Bombers membership back to the league at the annual Board of Governors meeting this morning. I have been unable to secure a new majority owner for the team.
I want to personally thank you for your unwavering support. Each of you - our loyal season ticketholders, sponsors, those of you who made season ticket pledges for the re-entry plan, local media and prospective minority investors - has made a difference in the team's successful 18-year tenure.
While I am disappointed with our current circumstance, today's decision is one that will allow the ECHL to move on with planning and scheduling and remain the premier “AA” hockey league in North America.
It is my hope that “AA” caliber hockey and the ECHL will return to the area soon. I truly believe that a downtown arena is the key to generating increased community support for professional hockey and ice based recreation at all levels. I hope that the feasibility study being led by Dr. Mike Ervin, University of Dayton athletic director Tim Wabler and Ed Bentley, of Deloitte & Touche, will confirm that belief.
And I am happy to know that during the coming year, fans will be able to get their hockey fix by supporting the new junior A Troy Bruins at Troy’s historic Hobart Arena as well as the new IHL’s Dayton Gems at Hara Arena. Any effort to promote this great sport in our community is good news.
It has been a joy to be a part of professional hockey in Dayton: the championship run in 2007, watching former Bombers achieve their goals of reaching the “AAA” level and even the NHL. But more importantly, I have seen the impact of being good community partners. During the past five years, we have had the opportunity to work with many important community groups that are making a difference in the region. From our volunteer work and charitable efforts, we have learned how effective the Dayton community can be when we are all working together.
On a personal note, I am extremely grateful to all of you for welcoming me into your community. The Dayton region has been my home for the past five years and I have made many close friends. While the Bombers will no longer be in town, I will continue to maintain ties here. I look forward to seeing you soon.
Sincerely,
Costa Papista |

Even though the possibility of Dayton returning in 10-11 was remote I hate to see anyone lose their team. The Bombers' management seems gratious recognizing the other hockey outlets in the Dayton area which would have done wonders here when various teams in the Cincinnati market folded up their tent.
Many thanks to the Dayton Bombers (and their fans) for all the memories. |
