CINCINNATI, Ohio – The Cincinnati Cyclones announced this afternoon that they have completed a trade with the Alaska Aces. The deal brings defenseman Doug Krantz to the Queen City, while forward Justin Johnson heads to Alaska. The Cyclones are the ECHL affiliate for the NHL’s Montreal Canadiens and Nashville Predators.
Krantz, 25, begins his second professional season after playing his rookie campaign with North Division rival Wheeling. He collected three goals and 21 assists for 24 points in 66 games with the Nailers. Doug collected two goals and six assists for eight points in eight games against Cincinnati in the regular season. He had one two-goal game as a rookie, a pair of lamplighters in a 10-4 loss at U.S. Bank Arena against the Cyclones on Jan. 14. In the opening round of the North Division playoffs he had a goal and three assists for four points in the seven game series loss to Cincinnati. The highlight being a two assist contest in game six to force the decisive game. He was acquired by Alaska from Wheeling earlier in the off-season.
The six-foot-three, 195 pounder from Marysville, BC played his college hockey at Cornell. With the Big Red, Krantz played in 131 games and netted 15 goals and 23 assists for 38 points while earning four varsity letters. A two-time All-Academic selection by the ECAC, Doug was also a two-time winner of the Earle Award for academic success at Cornell. Twice during his career the Big Red advanced to the NCAA tournament and both times they exited in the second round with an overtime loss. In 2004-05, he was selected to the NCAA West Regional All-Tournament team. At the end of his senior season (2007-08), he joined Texas (CHL) and played eleven playoff games for the Brahmas, picking up a pair of assists.
Johnson was signed as a free agent by Cincinnati in early December and played 43 games with the club, netting twelve goals and ten assists for 22 points. He added 208 penalty minutes with the Cyclones to lead the ECHL with 259. Justin also fought a league-high 31 times.
“Doug Krantz has the potential to develop into a high-end puck moving defenseman who will help us on the blueline,” Cyclones Head Coach Chuck Weber said. “We were happy to be able to honor Justin’s request to be traded to his hometown.”
Tickets for the 2009-10 Cincinnati Cyclones season are now on sale. The Cyclones Sales Department can be reached at 513-421-PUCK, extension 3. The Cyclones open the season at Elmira on Friday, October 16 and after three road games, host their home opener at U.S. Bank Arena against Wheeling on Saturday, October 24 at 7:30pm. There will be a special divisional championship banner raising ceremony prior to that game.

What you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

While I'm sure people see this as a bad move for the Cyclones, they aren't looking at the big picture here.
JJ will get a chance to play at home...like BP said...
Taking a chance on an unknown is what the ECHL is all about. You live and die by the chances you take. The coaching staff here is well aware at what they had in Johnson- an ENFORCER who ate up lots of penalty minutes... they are probably trying to solidify other concerns that they have in their roster by bringing Krantz here.
Krantz put some pressure on the clones when he played here during the playoffs so this gives a couple of organizations an opportunity to get a look at him.
We get someone in return for a trade that sends a player home...at this level, it shows how truly professional Chuck Weber is and how much he values the lives of his players. I'm sorry if you don't agree with the trade but in my eyes, a very classy move by the organization.

| I agree with BP and HOCKEY. What's best for the individual player as well as the organization itself, is more important than our superficial likes and disklikes. I'm sad to see him go, just as I have been sad to see many go, but they almost always prosper and that's ultimately what we should want. |

| Sad to see JJ go but as HockeyGod said, Krantz wasn't exactly a slouch from what I saw last year. Does anyone watch the opposition!? |

| Johnson will always be seen as a high class guy to me who played with a ton of heart. Unlike certain enforcers, he is not a "goon". I probably saw him pat his opponent on the back after half of the fights he was in last season. And although he may not have won every scrap (and that's not to say he didn't win his fair share), he did not go down easy, and if he did, he was popping right back up. Also, one thing I distinctively remember was JJ going over to shake hands with Wheeling players right after won the series last season, even before the teams did the respectful handshakes. That was his first instinct instead of celebrating. |

| Yea I met him in Wheeling and have spoken to him a few times off the ice. Hell, he bought me a beer. LOL He's a stand-up guy. Sad to see him go, but it is what it is and we should trust Chuck's decision. He usually makes the right ones for the team as well as the player. I think this will be good for JJ. He gets to go home... |

It's common message board etiquette. You need to get a clue.
It's like creating a topic saying "Tonights Game". This topic should be named "Johnson Traded for Krantz"
See how hard that is?

In Wheeling, Krantz was a turnover machine in his own end and wasn't all that physical for a D-man. He basically had to be mugged by Justin Chwedoruk before he finally dropped the gloves against the little guy. I did see some improvement with his puck handling late in the year. He still definitely needs to up the physicality.
He possesses a nice slapshot that I beleive he didn't pull the trigger on enough with Wheeling, but neither did anyone else on the Nailers for some reason. He can be an asset on the point on the PP as he is capable of making the right pass, and as mentioned, has a nice slapper. He won't kill you with stupid penalties either.
My friends and I stole the "Free Candy" moniker given to Brooks Orpik in Pittsburgh, and applied it to Krantz. He kind of looks like someone you'd see hanging outside a schoolyard in a van, but he seems like a really nice guy and has an Ivy League education.
This may not be a bad pick up for the Cyclones. He should only get better with a year under his belt, and did seem to step it up a little in the playoffs. If he can become more physical, he may become a decent player at this level.
I'd much rather have him back in Wheeling than Cliff "Concrete Skates" Loya, but the Nailers have decided to subject us to that clown for another season. |

Thanks for the insight into Kranz. He was a teammate of former Cyclone Jon Gleed at Cornell. Here are Krantz' stats:

Johnson was the first real enforcer that Weber ever had here. He could fight and antagonize and always stood up for his teammates. I hope that we find a capable replacement for him.
Anyone want to take bets as to when Randy will post something worthwhile? I'll take December of 2015. |

| As much as we think Krantz might take time we have had too many names to count that we thought this of and they turn out to be top players for Chuck and Dean, the best example was Cody Rudkowsky |
