CINCINNATI, Ohio - The Cincinnati Cyclones, ECHL affiliate of the NHL's Montreal Canadiens and Nashville Predators, announced this afternoon that they have agreed to terms with forward Adam Krug and defenseman Kirk Medernach for the upcoming season.
Krug, 26, signed with the Cyclones at the conclusion of the 2008-09 season from Adrian College. The Bulldogs missed out on an NCAA Division III postseason berth despite posting a 27-1-1 record. Adrian College won its final 26 games of the season to capture the Midwestern Collegiate Hockey Association's regular season and tournament titles. Adam was the third-leading scorer in NCAA Division III hockey (netting the most by any senior player) with 22 goals and 30 assists for 52 points in 28 games. He signed with the Cyclones on March 13 and netted a goal and two assists for three points in eleven games.
The five-foot-eleven, 170 pounder from Livonia, MI began his college career at Wayne State (2004-05) and played two seasons with the Tartars, collecting 18 goals and 24 assists for 42 points in 67 games. After Wayne State discontinued Division I hockey, Krug transferred to Adrian and was a two-time All-MCHA selection and a two-time All-Academic choice. During 2007-08, Adam was the MCHA Player of the Year after turning in a 30 goal, 47 assist, 77 point effort in 29 contests. He was also selected as a West Region All-American.
Medernach, 24, spent the 2008-09 season at Mercyhurst College, playing in 29 games and picking up a goal with ten assists for eleven points and accumulated 46 penalty minutes. Kirk signed with the Cyclones on March 26 and played in one game (March 28 at Johnstown, a 2-1 Cincinnati victory).
The six-foot-four, 225 pounder from Cudworth, SASK appeared in 128 games for Mercyhurst and had four goals and 25 assists for 29 points and 272 penalty minutes. During 2007-08, Kirk led the school in plus/minus at +14.
"Adam Krug and Kirk Medernach both got a taste of pro hockey here last season," Cyclones Head Coach Chuck Weber said. "That little extra experience will be helpful as they prepare for their rookie seasons."
The signing of Adam Krug and Kirk Medernach brings the number of players on the Cyclones roster to nine. They join forwards Jonathan Duchesneau, Barret Ehgoetz, Dustin Sproat and Mark Voakes and defensemen Jamie Coghlan, Brian O'Hanley and Jason Woll.
Tickets for the 2009-10 Cincinnati Cyclones season are now on sale. The Cyclones Sales Department can be reached at 513-421-PUCK, extension 3. The Cyclones open the season at Elmira on Friday, October 16 and after three road games, host their home opener at U.S. Bank Arena against Wheeling on Saturday, October 24 at 7:30pm. There will be a special divisional championship banner raising ceremony prior to that game.

HAHAHA....yep. Susan and I have been saying that for weeks, it was only a matter of time!
Not sure about Krug coming back, but maybe with a full season to build on, he'll become a real contributor. |

I'm intrigued by Medernach. I didn't see him play, but at 6'4" and 225 lbs. he could be outstanding if he can skate well and plays aggressively. His penalty minutes in college suggest that he plays aggressively. His undrafted status and lack of an AHL contract suggest that he skates like Syroczynski:)
I wasn't impressed in the least with Krug last season. But, he could get better and just because a player is signed doesn't mean that he will make the team or be around for very long if he does. Such is life in the bush leagues. LOL. |
