CINCINNATI The Trenton Devils battled back from a 2-0 deficit and netted four unanswered goals to claim a 4-2 win over the Cincinnati Cyclones on Wednesday night. Gerald Coleman turned in 37 saves to register his fifth win of the season and Mike Harder had a goal and a pair of assists to pace the Devils.
The Cyclones built a 2-0 lead near the midway spot of the first period with goals 35 seconds apart. Dustin Sproat fired home his sixth goal of the year from the slot past Trenton netminder Gerald Coleman at 8:01. Brett Robinson and Jason Jozsa had the assists on the score. At 8:36, Mike McLean grabbed a rebound and shoveled it past Coleman for his third score of the year. Ryan Del Monte had the lone assist on the score. Trenton would answer with goals from Dan Eves, his fourth at 9:10 and Brett Wilson, also his fourthat 19:22 on the power play. Cincinnati doubled up the Devils on shots in the opening stanza, 12-6.
Trenton scored the only goal of the second period to take a 3-2 edge into the second intermission. Mike Harder, the 13th year forward, slotted his second score of the year at 15:38 while on the power play. The Cyclones dominated play in the middle frame, having three power play chances and collecting 18 shots. The Devils made the most of their lone man-advantage chance and five shots.
Trenton extended the lead to 4-2 at 18:37 f the third, when Jeremy Akeson worked a two-on-one with Tim Kunes and converted his third score of the season. Cincinnati nearly doubled the shots in the period at 9-5. For the game, the Cyclones outshot the Devils, 39-16.
Gerald Coleman picked up the win with 37 saves to improve to 4-1-2, while Robert Mayer absorbed the loss, turning aside twelve shots. Mayer drops to 2-2 on the campaign.
The defeat marked the first time since February 9 of last season that Cincinnati had a two goal lead and could not hold it for victory.

The powerplay looks absolutely horrible! I loved the leglocks the Trenton players were doing to hold our players into position. Talk about clutch and grab hockey. |

Only good part was a very respectable crowd of 2,185. I liked the strategy of Trenton's power-play. Mostly keep the front wide open so the shooters have a clear shot at the goal and buzz the players at the net sides to go for the rebound. We on the other hand stack everyone in front and so between the 6'5" goalie and two of our guys and one of theirs-not a whole lot of gaps to find the goal. |

I was disappointed in the powerplay; specifically trying to pass out in front from behind the goal and redirect the puck in seemed to be futile except for a few seconds in the first period. You have to give credit to Gerald Coleman; he was pretty good in net tonight.
I am a little concerned with the defense. With the exception of the third goal the goals Mayer gave up were the result of defensive breakdowns. Marty Brodeur would have given up three tonight if he was in goal for the Cyclones.
I thought we outplayed Trenton for most of the night but the Devils took advantage of our mistakes and had very good goaltending. The zebras were substandard as well but that isn't surprising or the reason we lost the game. |

We're just not converting on as many offensive opportunities (even strength and pp) as we need to. Mueller, Voakes, Kilpatrick, and Heinrich aren't in right now and that hurts us a lot.
MacLean is in a slump. When he breaks out of it, he'll be a major contributor. Robinson and Leitch haven't contributed much, but they're rookies and are entitled to some time to adjust to the pro game.
Jozsa or Motherwell (bet he gets a few "creative" taunts from opponents ) don't appear to be Cashman's equivalent on the point of the power play. That is definitely a weakness right now.
When we get a few of the aforementioned players back, we'll be fine offensively. Our defense seems fairly solid to me. One concern that I have is Zinger. He certainly isn't living up to what one would expect from someone with his resume. He seems a bit slow and gets beaten all too often. Perhaps he's still not in game shape. If he is in proper shape, then there's an issue which probably needs to be resolved.
Mayer is green and some goalie watchers I know have expressed a great deal of concern with regard to his positioning and lateral movement. Last night was game four of his professional career, so he gets a pass from me. I don't think that we got "juiced" by Hamilton/Montreal with him, but only time will tell.
2,185 on hand. Not bad. I think that we've seen the last sub 1000 crowd at USBA. Ice storms not included, of course |

The only positive I took away from last night was the great crowd for a regular weekday game. Over 2000 showed up and it really did look like 2000 in the building.
Power Play better be fixed because we could have easily taken care of Trenton last night if we converted a few of the PP. Coleman was amazing after the first 10 minutes of the 1st its amazing he is still in the E, you have to give the credit where its due, now send him to Lowell please! |

hrc, i was thinking the exact same thing about zinger. i hope it's a fitness or health issue, but if he is 100%, just like you, i am not impressed with him. a quick look at the score sheet shows that he was out for 3 of trenton's 4 goals, 2 of which could be put on him and he was the only guy at -2 on the night for the cyclones.
the pp is generating chances but unfortunately chances don't equal goals. sure missing mueller, voakes, killer and henrich up front hurts but the chances are there. the cyclones were 1 for 19 in the 2 games against trenton. cashman's shot is sorely missed as is krantz's ability to get the puck in on net. at some point things will come together, the season is still young like a dayton bomber's girlfriend. if we come to january and things are clicking, then i'll be worried. |

Does Mayer remind anyone else of Sarjeant in net? Obviously not skill-wise, but his size and poise.
I got there around 7 and the crowd was not looking good. I guess a whole off season had made me forget that for weekday games you really can't get a good crowd estimate until the end of the first period. It filled up rather nicely, and I thought it was sure to be one of those games where it will be announced less than what I thought. I was pleasantly surprised to see the result.

Outstanding. ROTFLOL.
I did a search for Mr. Dan Knapp (Dayton Bomber online dating enthusiast) and couldn't find him. I figured he'd be a registered sex offender, but perhaps he pleaded to reduced charges.
Anyone know what happened to Dan? If he played football, the Bengals would have signed him by now, but his hockey career ended the day of his arrest. |

That is funny because I had the same reaction. Early on I was thinking 1000 people and wondering if they would announce under 1000. At the end of the 1st period I was thinking late arrivals had brought it up to a semi respectable (for a rainy Wednesday) 1500. At the end of second period I looked around and said Holy Mackerel! We must have 2000 people here! It seems like people come late to Cyclones games. |
