CINCINNATI - The Cincinnati Cyclones used a pair of third period goals to claim a 3-1 win over the Kalamazoo Wings on Wednesday night. The Cyclones took over sole possession of first place in the North Division with the triumph. Jimmy Kilpatrick had a goal and an assist to pace the attack, while Robert Mayer made 24 saves to pick up his tenth win.

Kalamazoo scored the lone goal of the first period when former Cyclone Sam Ftorek ripped a shot from the blue line for his seventh score of the season. Jon Landry and Andrew Fournier had the assists on the goal at 8:40. The shots on goal favored the Wings, 11-7, in the opening frame.

Cincinnati equaled the scores when Jimmy Kilpatrick snapped a shot from the slot through a screen for his first goal of the campaign. The power play goal was assisted by Barret Ehgoetz (playing in his 300th professional game) and Scott Reynolds. The shots favored the Cyclones, 11-4, in the period.

In the third period, Chris Morehouse lit the lamp for the second time this season, as Ehgoetz and Kilpatrick dished off the helpers. The scoring was closed out when Ian McKenzie had his first score of the year at 15:34 from Maxime Lacroix and Brett Motherwell. The shots on goal in the third period favored Kalamazoo, 10-8, and for the game the shots were even at 25 each.

Cincinnati was one-for-six on the power play, while Kalamazoo was one-for-five with the man-advantage. Robert Mayer won his tenth game of the season with 24 saves, while former Cyclone Ryan Nie took the loss with a 22 save performance.

Cincinnati takes the top spot in the North Division with 47 points, while Kalamazoo is second with 46, Toledo holds the third spot with 43 points and Wheeling rounds out the division with 42 points.

Kalamazoo is now 9-4-2 away from Wings Stadium. The club is 0-4 at U.S. Bank Arena and 9-0-2 in any other road building in the league.

Cincinnati is 23-13-1, while Kalamazoo is 21-10-4. The Cyclones are next in action Friday night (Jan. 15) at 7:05pm against the Johnstown Chiefs. It will be the first game at the Cambria County War Memorial for Chiefs interim Head Coach Neil Smith, who was the general manager of the New York Rangers team in 1994 that won the Stanley Cup. The game will be carried live on 1530 Homer The Sports Animal with the pregame at 6:30pm.

Tickets for the 2009-10 Cincinnati Cyclones season are now on sale. The Cyclones Sales Department can be reached at 513-421-PUCK, extension 3. Selected Friday night games are carried on 1530-AM Homer, while all 72 regular season games can be heard on the club's website at: www.cycloneshockey.com. The next game on 1530 Homer will come Friday, January 15 when the Cyclones travel to Johnstown at 7:05pm.

Mackenzie's goal was pretty good. What did you guys think of how they handled the more-rowdy people tonight with the dollar beers?

mckenzie's goal was exactly the type that i expect him to have. a quick move down low and a hard drive to the net.

there's a thread in "general hockey chatter" dealing with this. i liked what i saw. it seems they had more security around and were quick to deal with people throwing cans. however, there is a report of a group being tossed for building a beer-a-mid without warning. that seems a bit unwarranted, especially when beer-a-mids were being built without issue in other parts of the arena. so i would say it was improved but still not perfect. perhaps they could play a "please don't be a jackass" video on the scoreboard before the game and let people know that throwing cans will result in getting tossed and that beer-a-mids are ok but should be built where they won't obstruct other fans view of the game.

Chris Morehouse deserved that game winner. Good hustle to get to the puck at the K-zoo end and create that goal.

The game was great.

Morehouse's fight was a vintage lightweight slugfest. There were more punches thrown in that fight than in all of Jimmy Bonneau's fights in his time as a Cyclone. LOL.

Mayer looked sharp as a tack. He had every right to have a "shake the rust off game", but he picked up right where he left off before his door-opening stint in Hamilton. The defense played pretty tight and limited Kzoo's scoring chances as well.

MacKenzie's goal was a beaut. He wasn't going to be stopped-he wanted it.

Nice to see "Killer" Kilpatrick break the ice in the goal-scoring column.

Zinger probably will sleep until Saturday after his bout. He got stunned pretty badly before he recovered to take the decision.

I thought the effort was there tonight and it's always good to beat a solid divisional foe in the home barn.

The only negative was the 5 on 3 power play. Awful would be a charitable description.

I hate to admit it hrc666, but I think I agree with you.

I agree that they had a really enthusiastic crowd tonight, but from where I was sitting it seemed they were tossing people out pretty quickly for the beer-a-mids and at one point some security folks came down to tell the people near me how they were "properly" allowed to hit the glass.

At the end of the game they sent people down to each section and the guys on end opposite of section 60 were kind of jabbing the employee down there saying "feel like we're in prison" and "we don't need a babysitter."

Didn't mean to detract the topic at hand, so if you'd rather take it to the other forum I will.

The Zinger fight at the end was pretty good and former clones goalie Ryan Nie seemed to be having fun with the hecklers earlier in the night. Even saw a few Kalamazoo fans who came down.

Great game. Lots of energy by both sides. I brought two friends who never have been before, and now we're coming back on the 23rd. Our next off day with a hockey game. The only complaint was that the video board was out on the side with the players bench.

Sounds like the Cyclones outworked the Wings again. Man, Mayer seems to really have Kzoo's number... I'm pretty sure the success the Wings have had against Cincy was with Smith in net. They haven't seemed to solve them when Mayer is in net.

Really? They came to tell fans how to properly "pound on the glass"? I can completely understand them cracking down hard on any beer-related things but... wow. I don't even know what to do with that. Not trying not get off-topic, but yeesh.

Sounds like security is becoming more of a joke for their ENFORCEMENT, than it was when they let people be usual fans. If someone ever tells me how to "properly" bang on the glass...I'll gladly keep my money from then on out.

The side facing Section 60 (140) also went out at the beginning of the 2nd Period. MAN it's tough picking where Twister is under, without seeing the shuffling on the screen!

I sit in 128 and the screen on that side has never been good this season...you mean you can actually see something on the others?

Two screens are rear projection and have horrible resolution, they also bend inwards as the vertical stabilization is bad. The other two sides are the typical dot matrix screens, last night both dot matrix ones were out leaving only the awful rear projection ones.

Great game, as said by all, with only a few excited beer fans. The crowd was pretty animated which made it a good atmosphere for those of us actually watching the game.

And as far as I know, they are fine with people beating on the glass, you're just not allowed to hit it at the top where it can come loose or hang from the top. There was a bit of a security issue with a group to our right (about Section 108) where there was quite a few people standing on the glass, on the front row of seats, beating the top of the glass and generally just causing a problem for people up in the stands trying to see the ice. Not sure if anyone got kicked out, but they were told to not stand on the seats and beat on the top of the glass.

Happy for Killer, Morehouse and McKenzie getting their goals. Morehouse was a happy clam for the rest of the game, just cheesing the whole time. Good to see... Also happy with Morehouse's and Zinger's fights. Gotta love the Zinger vs. Jurynec rematch...

What you do today can change the course of your life far into the future. Today is critical. Today really counts.

I've been told beating on it is fine its the rocking it that they don't like cause it can come loose then.
