Nobody has a quicker release than Alexandre Ovechkin and every game he has a shot or two blocked.

| After two periods, Desharnais is tied for the fewest shifts among Montreal forwards with nine. |

I had to work today, so didn't get to watch the game live, but I recorded it, and just got done watching it. Overall, the little guy didn't do too bad, although it took him a while to get going.
The first period I would say he was overmatched. He was bumped off a puck along the boards early by former Cyclone Craig Adams, and he had the puck stolen/poked off his stick in open ice twice, one time in the offensive zone on the power play when Brooks Orpik picked his pocket and cleared the puck. DD got one shot during the period, when he came over the blue line with the puck with a clear shooting lane, but as the Pittsburgh announcers, said, "Desharnais took his time getting that shot away."
The second period had a couple of good chances for Desharnais to get his first NHL point. He took a pass in the slot and took a quick wrist shot that was blocked away by Fleury, who gave up a big rebound. DD almost got his own rebound, which he would have easily put into a wide open net, but Orpik made a nice poke check to break up the scoring chance and send Desharnais sprawling. Later in the period, the puck was passed to DD at the right side of the net, and he quickly attempted to pass the puck through the crease to Trotter, who was waiting on the other side. But Fleury got his stick down, and disrupted the pass just enough to prevent Trotter from scoring his first NHL goal.
The 3rd period also saw some good energy from the Desharnais/Trotter line. The line was really buzzing in the offensive zone about 6 1/2 minutes into the period, and DD was right in the middle of it. He carried the puck into the zone on the right side, and fired a nice pass to Trotter at the front of the crease, who backhanded it through the five hole, but the puck hit the post and came back out. The defenceman then threw it back down low, where DD took the puck off the boards and slid the puck along the goal line between Kris Letang's skates into the crease area again, only to be denied again as Fleury placed his stick along the ice to block the puck, again giving up another juicy rebound. Trotter got the puck at the right hash marks, and slid the puck between his own legs to Desharnais, who took the pass at the right faceoff dot. However, it took him by surprise, and as he went to shoot the puck it was knocked off his stick by a Mark Eaton pokecheck. Pittsburgh then cleared the zone, but Montreal's next line out finally got the puck past Fleury when Mathieu Darche fired a slapshot upstairs from the top of the left circle.
Other highlights for DD in this game included several blocked shots, a drawn penalty on Sergei Gonchar for interference in the 2nd period by simply skating down the slot, and getting kicked out of a faceoff. I don't think he was worthy of a 3rd star, and he will definitely have to work hard to be successful at the NHL level. But overall, I think he did okay, and earned at least another game. He and Trotter played well together.

Game two of the call up not so good as game 1. Only 7:39 of ice time, but did manage one shot on goal and won 4/5 facoffs. Line was on ice for first goal against, but the coach probably should be rolling lines better at home than to allow his 4th line play against the visitor's top line. Also, the goal was evidently the fault of White who deflected it past Halak.
The Canadiens evidently both ran up against a hot goalie and were a bit lethargic which may be understandable when playing a very unusual two straight day games.

Desharnais looked terribly overmatched in this game. His lone shot on goal was a soft backhander from about 12-14 feet out. He only had four shifts over the game's final 35 minutes, including just two in the third (one early to take a faceoff and then one late in the game when it was 3-0 Boston).
A return trip to Hamilton is in the offing following his less than stellar performance today. |

The Hamilton line didn't play much after Montreal fell behind, 2-0 after one period. Desharnais turned the puck over twice in the first period, both times in the offensive corners, and twice more in the 2nd, both times again in the offensive zone, one of those times on the power play while falling down at the side of the net. He lost another race for the puck in the offensive corner to Boston's Adam McQuaid in the 3rd period, one of only 2 shifts for the Hamilton line in the final 20 minutes of play.
The line surrendered a goal when Adam McQuaid fired a shot past Desharnais from the right point, that was deflected in off the stick of Ryan White. It was McQuaid's first NHL goal. |

| On the first goal, Desharnais was caught in too deep and couldn't get out to the point in time. |
