Cyclones Surpass 2009 Season Attendance Number
Lose To Charlotte, 2-1
CINCINNATI - The Charlotte Checkers handed the Cincinnati Cyclones their first regulation time loss in eleven games in a 2-1 win at U.S. Bank Arena on Friday night. Julien Brouillette's power play goal early in the third period broke the tie. Ryan Munce stopped 30 shots in taking the victory for the Checkers.
The Cyclones have been exceptional in the month of February, posting a 9-1-2 mark. Cincinnati has outscored its opponents, 38-21, during this run. The squad had a one point lead in the North Division on February 1 and has now extended that to ten over Kalamazoo despite the loss. The Cyclones are 8-1-2 in their eleven games at U.S. Bank Arena dating back to January 25.
The crowd of 6164 pushed the Cyclones season attendance to 113,183an average of 3651 per game. It was the ninth time this season that Cincinnati has attracted in excess of 5000 for a game. The Cyclones sit 16th in the ECHL in attendance, 25.9 percent ahead of last season's pace through 31 home games. Cincinnati, which has finished first or second in attendance percentage improvement in each of the prior two seasons, has attracted more fans than it did through the 36 games of the regular season a year ago (111,750). The club has drawn more fans through the turnstiles in the regular seasonwith five more dates left in 2009-10than any campaign since 2002-03 (when 131,144 attended).
There was no scoring in the first period, but Cincinnati had two power play chances that went unconverted. The Cyclones won the shots on goal battle in the opening 20 minutes, 9-8.
The teams exchanged goals in the middle frame. Cincinnati netted the first goal of a hockey game for the league-high 35th time this season. Off a faceoff in the Charlotte end, defenseman Scott Marchesi ripped his third goal of the season on a one-timer. Mark Van Guilder won the draw and Marchesi picked it up in the left wing area and netted the lamp lighter. Charlotte would even the scores with a shorthanded goal at 16:06 from defenseman Kevin Schaeffer. The third goal of the season for Schaeffer was assisted by Mike Taylor. The shots in the second period favored Cincinnati, 13-4. A major boarding call against Van Guilder would give the Checkers a 3:28 power play early in the third period.
Charlotte scored the lone goal of the third period on that extended power play when Julien Brouillette netted his twelfth goal at 3:26. Matt Schepke and Tyler Doig had the assists. Cincinnati had chances in the waning seconds with a power play and the goaltender pulled for a six-on-four chance but was unable to convert. The shots again went decisively to the Cyclones, 9-3 and for the game, 31-15.
Ryan Munce took the win for Charlotte, turning aside 30 shots and collecting his 15th win. Jeremy Smith took the loss, turning away 13 shots. The Checkers were one for four on the power play, while the Cyclones were zero for five with the man-advantage.
Cincinnati is 36-18-3, while Charlotte is 30-17-6. The five game home stand for the Cyclones yields to a six game road swing that will keep the club away from U.S. Bank Arena until the re-scheduled game with Johnstown on Thursday, March 18 at 7:30pm. The club is at Johnstown tomorrow night (7pm at www.cycloneshockey.com), while Charlotte will travel to Kalamazoo for a pair of contests against the Wings on Saturday and Sunday.
Cincinnati leads the North Division with 75 points. Kalamazoo is second with 65, while Toledo is third at 62 and Wheeling rounds out the division with 59 points. The Cyclones have led the North Division for 52 days this season and for 313 days over the past three-plus seasons. Cincinnati's 'magic number' to clinching a playoff berth is now at 16.
Tickets for the 2009-10 Cincinnati Cyclones season are now on sale. The Cyclones Sales Department can be reached at 513-421-PUCK, extension 3. The next game on ESPN 1530 will come next Friday (March 5), when the Cyclones travel to the defending Kelly Cup champion South Carolina Stingrays at 7pm.

Charlotte has some big, nasty guys on the ice. Not the Cyclones style and they struggled with it, especially early in the 1st period.
Things got really nasty in the 2nd when #27 took a cheap shot cross check on Kilpatrick. Benson had just left the ice, and Motherwell stepped in and took on the much bigger, better fighter. He didn't stand much of a chance, but thumbsup to him for having the sack to step up.
Then Van Guilder got a 5 and a trip to the showers for an ugly boarding against another one of their high PIM guys (they have several). There were so many penalties around that one that I didn't even get them all.
In short, I hope we don't get these guys in the playoffs. They are just one of those teams you don't want to play for 5 to 7 straight games.
PS - Does anyone have any idea what Benson did to get sent to the box from the bench for an unsportsmanlike? Weber was not too happy about it at all.

| Don't know exactly what you meant by "ugly" on the boarding call. It was a very dangerous hit with the guy bent over and almost on his knees. If thats what you meant by "ugly " I agree. If you meant an ugly call by the ref then I disagree as it was the right call including the match penalty. Having watched Wheeling for the last three games and now Charlotte, looks like teams have figured out that the best way to play the Clones is to stay in their face and not let them get started with the puck. Both teams checked us off the puck very quickly after we received it. Toledo is another team that plays us like that--very close checking. By definition that is playoff hockey and I hope the team improves moving the puck quicker from tape to tape before the playoffs start. |

| What was the deal with the bobbleheads last night? I actually went to a Dayton Gems game with a group last night, but had a friends text me and tell me they ran out of bobbleheads or something? |

Ugly game. All I know is after Charlotte was done clowning around and getting away with it, I would have found someone to be boarding as well. Stefanishion (#27) should have been tossed long before Van Guilder ever was. He's the reason the game turned into what it did for the first 2 periods. Then he left TJ Reynolds to clean up his mess with Benson. Just plain disgusting. |

| When we play Charlotte in Charlotte in a few games Chuck will probably have Benson and Morehouse both in the lineup and wont scratch them if we still have a small town worth of players to bring another tough guy to the party |

I totally agree. I wouldn't at all be surprised to see a fine come down from the league for that hit. From where I was it looked like Van Guilder left his feet to make the hit and that will get you tossed every time.
Teams are also finding a way to slow down the Cyclones scoring, but I'm confident Coach Weber will make the appropriate adjustments. I hate to see this long road trip, but it may be just what the doctor ordered. It seems sometimes teams sink or swim on long road trips, and this will be a challenging one. I'm confident they will come back stronger though. |

Yep, and the Pink bags from the Pink in the Rink last year. I know you can't predict a US Customs "hand search" but if you know the promotion is coming say six to eight months ahead of time perhaps maybe an earlier order date might be in order.
If the plan is to bring people back to USBA to collect their bobblehead at a future game that strikes me as a bit underhanded.

I can think of some four letter taunts (+ers) directed to the other team that will get you two minutes. I was way too far away to hear what was said but I could see Hans was running his mouth big time.

From what I heard, the Cyclones/US Bank Arena goes in with 5 other business from around the area when having things shipped into the US because its a cheaper rate. The bobbleheads have been in customs for 3 weeks. One of the business they went in items are causing the delay... |

Here is prime example of what I have been "complaining" about. We run into a team with far more "toughness" and we take a beating. Why.....because we have one guy that can drop the gloves. I give Morehouse huge props for taking on guys that are much bigger. The reality is he is not feared....we need a couple of big, mean SOB's that other teams FEAR. You beat up on our skilled players and our monsters retaliate. It is unfair for guys like Motherwell to have to fill that void - someone will end up getting hurt.
