CINCINNATI, Ohio - The Toledo Walleye scored a pair of third period goals to grab a 3-2 win over the Cincinnati Cyclones. The defeat also knocked Cincinnati out of the North Division lead. The Cyclones had led the division every day since January 23. The Kalamazoo Wings capture the top spot by virtue of a 2-1 win at Wheeling tonight.
Toledo, which is in a heated battle with five other teams for the final two playoff spots in the American Conference, made it wins in consecutive nights over Cincinnati to enhance its chances. Sal Peralta had a pair of scores for the Walleye to pace the attack.
The Cyclones opened the scoring with their league-leading 42nd first goal of the season at 1:07 of the first period. Brett Robinson registered his 14th goal of the season after taking a feed from Ryan Del Monte and Reid Cashman. Toledo would equal the scores with a power play goal at 8:12 from Sal Peralta, his ninth of the year. The shot from the center of the blue line came off the stick of Joe Charlebois and was tipped in front by Peralta. The shots on goal favored Cincinnati, 15-3, in the opening term.
In the second period, fourth-year forward Scott Reynolds netted his 22nd goal of the season for Cincinnati. The power play goal came as Reynolds slapped a shot just inside the left post at 10:39. Mathieu Aubin and Barret Ehgoetz had the assists on the go-ahead goal. Cincinnati dominated the shots on goal again, 14-7, in the stanza.
Toledo scored twice in the third period to steal the victory. Tony Romano's twelfth goal of the season at 6:12 tied things up at two each. Simon Danis-Pepin had the lone assist. The game winning goal came from Peralta with his second tally of the night and tenth of the campaign on the power play, as Akim Aliu and Chris Robertson had the helpers. The shots benefited the Walleye, 8-6, in the period and Cincinnati led the shots for the game by a 35-20 count.
Jordan Pearce stopped 33 shots for Toledo in the win, blanking Cincinnati for the final 29:11. Jeremy Smith turned away 17 shots in taking the defeat. The Walleye went two-for-three on the power play, while the Cyclones were one-for-four with the man-advantage.
Cincinnati is 40-23-3, while Toledo is 33-26-6. The Cyclones return to U.S. Bank Arena on Tuesday night (March 23) for a 7:30pm clash against East Division leaderElmira. It is a Big Beer Tuesday with 24 ounce Pabst Blue Ribbon and Miller High Life cans offered all night long for just two dollars. Next Saturday (March 27), Kalamazoo rolls in for its final regular season appearance of the year at 7:30pm.
The crowd of 6310 pushed the Cyclones season attendance to 122,049an average of 3698 per game. It was the eighth time this season that Cincinnati has attracted in excess of 6000 for a game. The Cyclones sit 15th in the ECHL in attendance, 30.0 percent ahead of last season's pace through 33 home games. Cincinnati, which has finished first or second in attendance percentage improvement in each of the prior two seasons, has already attracted more fans than it has through the entire regular season of any campaign since 2002-03when the Cyclones brought 131,144 through the turnstiles. Presently, it is the fifth-most people to watch the club in regular season play in team history.
Kalamazoo now leads the North Division with 84 points. Cincinnati is second with 83, while Toledo is third at 72 and Wheeling rounds out the division with 66 points.
The opening round of the Kelly Cup playoffs in the American Conference will be during the week of April 5 and will be a best-of-five series.
