CINCINNATI, Ohio - Reading Royals goaltender Matt Dalton stopped a career playoff-high 45 shots in backstopping his club to a 3-1 win over the Cincinnati Cyclones on Saturday night at U.S. Bank Arena. Greg Scott added a goal and an assist for Reading.

This was the second game of the American Conference Finals, a series that the Cyclones have advanced into three consecutive seasonsjoining Greensboro (1989-91) and Alaska (2004-06) as ECHL teams to accomplish this. Reading now has a two games to none lead over Cincinnati. The third game in this round of the USA Collision Centers postseason for the Cyclones occurs on Tuesday night at 7pm. The game will be carried on ESPN 1530.

For the tenth time in eleven games in the playoffs, Reading scored the game's first goal. Defenseman Jared Ross snuck a shot from the right wing side that trickled past goaltender Jeremy Smith, for his third goal of postseason. Greg Scott and Rob Kwiet had the assists. The Cyclones ripped 19 shots in on goal in the opening termthe most by the club in any period of the postseason.

There was no scoring in the second period, but Cincinnati had chances. The Cyclones outshot the Royals, 14-5, in the period and also had four power play opportunities that went unrewarded.

Reading extended the lead to 2-0, when Scott netted his first pro playoff goal at 5:13 from Aaron Brocklehurst and Alex Berry. Cincinnati would respond a bit more than three minutes later with its only tally of the night. Hans Benson chased a puck down in the right corner and fired a puck into the slot area. The pass bounced off the left halfwall and shot to the center point when Brett Motherwell ripped a shot on goal that was tipped in front by Brett Robinson for his sixth score of the postseason at 8:22. Robinson's marker ties him for the league goal scoring lead among rookies.

With Jimmy Kilpatrick in the penalty box late in the game, the Cyclones pulled goaltender Jeremy Smith in an attempt to tie the contest. With the net open in the Cincinnati endGavin Morgan got to a loose puck in the center ice area and was able to slip it into the cage for his third score of the postseason. The empty net power play goal was assisted by Marc Cavosie. Cincinnati outshot Reading, 12-2, in the period and 46-17 for the game. The 46 shots are a playoff-high for the Cyclones.

Matt Dalton won his ECHL playoff-leading eighth game with his 45 save performance. Jeremy Smith took the defeat in goal, turning away 14 of the 16 shots he faced. Reading was one for four with the power play, while Cincinnati was zero for four with the extra attacker.

The Cyclones posted a 44-25-3 record in the regular season and entered the postseason as the fifth placed team in the American Conference. Cincinnati upset fourth-seeded and defending Kelly Cup champion South Carolina in the opening round. The best of five series went the full five conteststhe last three being decided in overtime, at Charleston. In the semifinals, the Cyclones went a full seven games before knocking off Charlottethe regular season American Conference champion. This is Cincinnati's fourth trip to the conference finals, the club has won one of the other three visits.

The Royals turned in a 37-29-6 record to finish in seventh place in the American Conference standings. Reading upended North Division champion Kalamazoo in five games and then swept sixth-seeded Florida in four games. This is the club's second trip to the conference finalshaving lost to Florida in its other trip in 2005.

Tickets for the 2010-11 Cincinnati Cyclones season are now on sale, as will as games in the American Conference Finals round. The Cyclones Sales Department can be reached at 513-421-PUCK, extension 3. All road Kelly Cup playoff games will be carried on ESPN 1530 and on the club's website at: www.cycloneshockey.com.

"WOW"!!!

That really hurts out shooting the enemy, 46 to 17, and being able to get only goal!!!
All season the boys have been able to step up and do what is needed but being down 2 games to none and going to Reading for three games, I'm afraid our chances aren't looking at all good!
I'd love to see the series come back to USBA, but realistically, I don't think it's going to happen!
Winning 4 of the next 5 games is a "TALL" order for anyone.
The Cyclones have a great winning record on the road, but taking 3 straight from Reading in their barn, is a bit much to expect!
As they say, take one game at a time and hope for the best!

I.m sorry, I can't take fault at Kilpatrick on that. By no means do I blame
the loss on the officials, but what they didn't call in the last 5 minutes
of the game confused me on why you finally decide to call one. Why wasn't
a roughing the goaltender penalty at about the 3 minute mark when Smith was
leveled at full pace? Our responce back for the action was also very timid.
I know a penalty would have been bad, but you can't allow this action to go
unpunished considering what Smith has done for us.
I'm behind Smith 100%, but Mayer should have been in goal. Smith has played
around 18 straight games and if not physical then mentally he needs a break.
Now who do you use im super critical game 3 ?

The Cyclones have ouplayed the Royals the last 5 periods. The only difference is the Royals have capitalized on their scoring chances. The Cyclones could not buy a goal and they should have had five the last game.I know they can pull this off. They have to win the next two and that is very possible.Kilpatrick has to stop taking that goal line shot because it is not working, there have been guys right at the goal mouth who were open.I also see why Cashman was a healthy scratch. The first game on the PP, Motherwell was wide open a few times for the one timer and Cashman would not pass to him.Too many turnovers and bad passes for an AHL caliber player.

And now you know how Charlotte feels.

Fortunes have been reversed and now WE have the skaters that are getting the job done but are getting out-goalied.
Funny how that works.

Smith is still solid but Dalton is out of his mind right now. He's made some incredible saves the last few games and you can tell that he has massive confidence in his game.

Unless Dalton has a meltdown, we're in BIG trouble.

"trouble snuble" I say. take 2 out of three in Reading and we are watching another home game, I suppose Dayton a couple years back felt the task was equally impossible when we had them down by as many games. We battled back to take the Bullies to game seven. I'm certainly no Homer, made popular by recent posts, for what ever reason we have to put a couple of dings in the armor that is Dalton. I would say he's ripe for a schlacking now. Taking 4 of 5 sounds like a tall order however it's done in the season all the time, drop 2 in a row to win the next 4. Not certain what magic Weber and the team might have up their sleeves bit i'm certain it doesn't include them just rolling over. The Clones have dug themselves a purdy deep hole, certainly recoverable though......tough decision about Mayer though, little benefit him being up in the AHL sitting on the bench. Never thought it would go down this way so far

Nobody suggested the 'clones will roll over.

They've actually played pretty well the first two games, but sometimes the goaltender is the deciding factor.

Again, we did it to Charlotte, now Reading is doing it to us.
Just works that way sometimes.

Missed the game Friday night, but was able to catch the game on Saturday. And in my honest opinion, the Cyclones are far from being finished.
The next couple days of 'breathing space' will give the boys a chance to recharge and our coach to reworked the game plan. The Royals had quite a bit of time to watch their 'future' opponent (I am quite sure they had scouts at the Cyclones vs. Checkers series) to come up with thier game plans. After these two games I have the confidense in both Coach Weber and the team to make the needed adjustments and dig out of this seemingly deep hole.

OUR TEAM has the skills and I BELIEVE!!!!! DO YOU??

Coach Weber always seems to be able to work magic with what he has to work with!
I expected to see that reflected in Sat's game but it didn't work out that way.
I sure hope the days off and tweaks by coach Weber do the trick.
From what we saw of Reading Fri & Sat, there is no reason the Clones shouldn't beat them handily because they are not at all physical like South Carolina and Charlotte, and we managed to beat each of them.
I firmly believe coach Weber can work "MAGIC" LOL!
We are patiently awaiting the next game at USBA.

It's a miracle that the team is still playing given how abysmal its offense has been.

The team has struggled with its goal scoring since about the midway point of the regular season. It's gotten much worse in the playoffs.

In 14 playoff games, the Cyclones have scored 34 goals. If one eliminates the 9-5 fluke vs. Charlotte and the first game of the playoffs (a 6-1 victory over SC) then the team has scored all of 19 goals in 12 games-including overtimes. This adjusted figure comes out to an anemic 1.5 per 60 minutes. It's impossible to win on a sustained basis with this type of offensive output.

Dalton played outstandingly in game 2, but the Clones just aren't sharp around the net. The Cyclones have generated more than ample scoring chances against the Royals (unlike the SC and CHT series). Dalton is hardly the second coming (a 3.3 gaa in the regular season), so he's a goalie who should be able to be scored upon.

Our power play appears to be hopeless. Weber has tried every combination possible. Reid Cashman (-6 / 0 points in four games) certainly hasn't helped things. It's pretty apparent why he was sitting in the stands in Milw. Still, I don't think that Weber has any other option but to hope that Cashman regains his game.

This team has scored 8 goals in its last six games. Weber ought to put in his two college signees (Heidinger and Ortiz) and McKenzie (if healthy). The offensively-challenged Del Monte and the deeply-slumping Aubin ( 1 meaningless goal in 14 playoff games) need to sit as does Benson if McKenzie is healthy. We need goals not grit.

Reading can be beaten. A couple of two game winning streaks is very possible against the Royals. But if the Cyclones don't win Tuesday, then butter 'em up; they'll be burnt toast.

Sure it doesn't look good, but how soon we forget. Last year, round 1 against Wheeling, we lost games 1 and 2 at home and proceeded to win 3 in a row at WesBanco.

What you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

I hope they can pull it off but realistically speaking, I think it's doubtful!
only because so far in all the play off games, they have yet to string two wins in a row.
I hope the boys come out smokin and kick some serious Reading butt!!!
And as I continue to stress, lets take one game at a time and hope things turn out in our favor!

They did win game 5 of the South Carolina series and game 1 of the Charlotte series, so they technically have won 2 in a row during the playoffs....just not in the same series.

It can be done. As others have mentioned Dayton came back on us in 06-07 and we came back on Wheeling (who was probably a better team than us that year) last season.

Other than a goalie that is standing on his head, Reading has shown me anything to make me think they are THAT good.
