CINCINNATI, Ohio - The Cincinnati Cyclones, the ECHL affiliate of the Montreal Canadiens and Nashville Predators of the National Hockey League, announced they have submitted qualifying offers on eight players for the 2010-11 season. The eight players are forwards Chris Morehouse, Matt Pierce and Brett Robinson and defensemen Jamie Coghlan, Brett Motherwell, Brian O'Hanley, Kevin Roeder and Brock Sheahan.
Morehouse finished second on the team in penalty minutes (102), while Pierce collected a team-high 28 goals and Robinson led all rookies in playoff goal scoring with nine. Coghlan finished third among defensemen on the team in the regular season at +14, Motherwell and O'Hanley tied for the team lead among rearguards in regular season scoring with 28 points. Roeder finished third on the club in playoff plus/minus among defensemen at +5, while Sheahan was second best in the category at +6.
Each team was entitled to reserve the rights to a maximum of eight qualified players. Of the eight qualified players, no more than four could be veterans (260 regular season professional hockey games played as of the start of the upcoming 2010-11 season). Players on open qualifying offers cannot be traded.
The qualifying offer must remain open for acceptance until Aug. 1 at which time the qualifying offer becomes null and void and the team may sign the qualified player to any salary or may elect to take no further action. Teams that extend a valid qualifying offer to a non-veteran player shall retain the rights to that qualified player for one playing season.
A team that extends a valid qualifying offer to a veteran player will retain the rights to that veteran until Aug. 1. After Aug. 1, if the veteran player is not signed to a contract by the team, the veteran shall be deemed a restricted free agent and shall be entitled to seek and secure offers of employment from other ECHL teams. Restricted free agents may not be traded. When a restricted free agent receives a contract offer from a team other than the team with the player's rights and the restricted free agent wishes to accept the contract offer, the restricted free agent and the offering member must, within 24 hours, notify the ECHL, the team with the player's rights and the Professional Hockey Players' Association. The member with the player's rights shall have seven days after the date it is notified to exercise its right to match the contract offer.
If a restricted free agent is not signed to either an offer sheet or a contract by an ECHL team by Aug. 31, the player shall be deemed an unrestricted free agent.
Teams are not allowed to sign more than 24 players to contracts during the summer. Players that were not signed by July 1 or extended a qualifying offer by July 1 become unrestricted free agents.
The Cincinnati Cyclones will open training camp in early October. Season tickets for the Cyclones are currently on sale and can be obtained by contacting the team's sales department at 513-421-PUCK (7825).

Why did we put a offer on Roeder? I thought he signed up with another league? |

That makes no sense otherwise there would be a offer for Sproat too. |

Coach Weber has very rarely qualified veterans; I believe because the contract is an automatic (at least 5%) raise and is guarenteed. Any veterans unqualified are free agents and can sign anywhere. Barret could sign with anyone but most likely is setting up a home here and would very much like to play here. Sproat most likely told the staff he was (is) going to Europe and not waste a spot for him.
The Roeder situation bears watching. Like most players his age he's looking for a major promotion. That may, or may not happen. While I think Kevin is a good ECHL defenseman he is undersized and was beat more than a few times by better skaters in the playoffs (He can really hit though...). Honestly he was our #5 or #6 defenseman on the ice in the playoffs but may have been battling his previous injury. If Coghlan was available in the playoffs I have to think Roeder's the healthy scratch. I hope he makes the jump to the AHL but I would welcome him back here.
I am very happy to see Morehouse was qualified. Chris is genuine on and off the ice. He plays with heart and was a fan favorite. He may never make the AHL but has the potential to be a real leader on the team like Barret.
Lastly I hope even though Sproat has moved on the other guys take the reins of HP4K and continue its mission. I think HP4K has been one of the best things to come out of Cincinnati hockey in a long time and really makes the team shine. Barret, Coghlan and Morehouse were big participants and I hope they step up into the leadership role. BTW, continue to support HP4K by bidding on Sproat's game worn helmet!.. http://cgi.ebay.com/Autographed-Helmet-Cincinnati-Cyclones-Dustin-Sproat-/260628963718?cmd=ViewItem&pt=U_Hockey_Fan_Shop&hash=item3caeb26186 |

Yeah, I love Chris Morehouse. I'm not ashamed to admit that. |
