Neither Ellis nor Smith has impressed this season, although I watched Ellis play a few times last month and he played well 2 of the 3 times I watched him on the tube.
Given the tepid performances of both of these guys, it's possible that Cedrick could be worked back in via several ways:
1) Continued mediocre performances of either Smith or Ellis
2) Injuries to any of the 3.
3) A trade of any of these three goalies. Smith and Roloson are both UFAs (unrestricted free agents) at season's end so Tampa receives nothing from either if they leave. Given that they just traded for Roloson it would follow that it's highly unlikely he'd be moved; not so with Smith.
Also, who knows what Yzerman really thinks of Cedrick? This Roloson deal had been in the works awhile according to published sources, so Desjardins shining debut wasn't really factored into Yzerman's thinking during the initial phases of the trade.
Also, as Awesome Sauce pointed out, the Lighting weren't likely to go anywhere with Smith or Ellis, so that's the real motivator behind the trade for the vet Roloson; not Cedrick.
In any case, Cedrick is in the Terminator mode: "He'll be back". It's only a question of when and where. |

Worth noting: There's been a lot of goalies over the years in the National Hockey League that were called up due to injury, played in a couple games, played well and got a couple wins and were never heard from again. |

quote: Even Yzerman said Desjardins did great, and reaffirmed what Boucher had said about him. But that being said, it was never the short-term plan for Desjardins to stay up here. He wasn't even supposed to play (at least, until G Mike Smith got hurt), rather work with goalie coach Frantz Jean during Norfolk's break.
Yzerman said they see Desjardins as part of their future, but just not their present.
"Our plan was to bring Cedrick up while Smitty was hurt and send him back down when Smitty was healthy," Yzerman said. "He got a chance to play in two games. We had hoped to see him at the NHL level and assess him. It's mostly for the future."
"We're very pleased with how Cedric played. "Having said that, he's played two games in the NHL. We're not going to rush anybody into something. And this opportunity (trade) might not have been there had we waited longer. SO we feel like we have the best of both worlds. We still have Cedric Desjardins in our organization and available to us. And we have Dwayne Roloson."

From ESPN's Scott Burnside on the Lightning acquiring Dwayne Roloson:
"Minor leaguer Cedrick Desjardins got in a couple of starts and won both, but clearly GM Steve Yzerman did not like the looks of an Ellis-Desjardins or Ellis-Smith tandem moving forward, even though the Bolts continue to vie with Washington for the top spot in the Southeast Division and their goals-against average has improved in the past month or so."

Nice Norfolk article about Cedrick and his NHL experience:

quote: It's the stuff of theater.
The star has laryngitis, and an understudy is called in from off Broadway - in this case, 800 miles off. The kid's performance gets rave reviews.
Meet the new star.
It's a script for the Chrysler, not one for just across the plaza at Scope, where hockey life seldom imitates art.
In this play, Cedrick Desjardins beats Montreal 4-1 in his NHL debut as the Tampa Bay goalie. Two nights later, he shuts out the New York Rangers for 59-1/2 minutes, then wins 2-1 in overtime. When the game's stars are announced, he's No. 1.
Standing ovation.
Bring down the curtain.

Cedrick injured. Extent of injury unkown.
http://www.tampabay.com/sports/hockey/lightning/tampa-bay-lightning-coach-guy-boucher-takes-blame-for-losses-goalie/1146112
quote: Desjardins hurt: AHL Norfolk goaltender Cedrick Desjardins, who made such an impression in two victories for the Lightning on Dec. 30 and Jan. 1, sustained an undisclosed upper-body injury in Sunday's game with Charlotte and will have tests over the next day or two to determine the extent of the injury. Desajrdins, 14-6-1 with a 2.56 goals-against average, a .906 save percentage and a shutout for the Admirals, left Sunday's game in the second period after a collision with a Charlotte player.
