Why start a thread blaming Pickard? It was the whole team who keeps losing these games

Yes it is the whole team to blame, but is Randy Petrauk coaching Pickard behind the scenes? We've been spoiled with excellent goalies since our return, but I don't see any impovement in Pickard's game. He is hot then extremely cold. I don't get him at all.

It is what it is.

We're a developmental league team and Chet was sent here to find his game. If he's not finding it... Oh well.

As I've said, you take the good with the bad. Last year it was good, but so far this year not so much.

We had our best chance to pull 2 points tonight with 3 of Wheelings best players not on the bench. Instead we got blown out. Again.
Seems like every time we have 2 or 3 games that give us hope we get one that is awful.
Whatchagonnado.

At this point the best thing is likely for us all to adjust our expectations and just be happy with making the playoffs. Anything beyond that is gravy.

We're stuck with him. Every other game, I guess.

He's on a 3 year NHL entry level contract with Nashville. Given his draft status (1st Round 18th overall pick 2008 draft), Nashville could have invested $2.5-3 million in Pickard. If he's got a two-way contract, then it's much less. In any case, Nashville has a high draft pick and a significant amount of money sunk in this player already.

The Nashville organization is probably ordering Skalde to play Pickard every other game so that they can decide whether to continue with him or get rid of him. It's our esteemed priviledgeto be the venue which serves Nashville's purpose. It's important for me to keep in mind how positive the overall (5 year) affiliations have been for the Cyclones. We've had the yin and now we're getting the yang.

The thing that really bugs me about Pickard is how he reacts after getting shelled. Last night, he went down the walkway to the locker room and returned in a short time. He seemed a little bit down for a while, but seemed that all was ok just a few minutes later.

I contrast that with the reaction of a Desjardins when he played horribly. Cedrick took it to heart-you could just see it in his eyes. I'm not so sure that Pickard does. While an individual's outward reaction doesn't tell the entire story, it does reveal some of it. I don't know if Pickard's competitive fire burns too brightly.

I was on the other end of the ice for the first period goals, so I couldn't judge their "saveability". While I can't say that all three of the second period goals should have been stopped, I'm pretty confident in saying that at least one of them should have been. It would be pretty hard for me to defend Pickard's performance last night-even if I were inclined to do so.

Skalde got red-hot with the team after goal 5. His face was purple and he was obviously being very loud. As much s*** as he gave them, they deserved more.

Has anyone EVER seen a more idiotic pass on a 2 on 1 than Sproat tried in the first period? The defenseman had completely committed to defending the pass and the potential recipient (Calla-he of 7 goals in the past two seasons) can't score. Sproat, Eghoetz and Fast are the absolute worst in this area. It's as if they want a medal because they're such "giving teammates" that they always look for others to score first. It's such crap. They're all mediocre passers who should be ordered to shoot when within the hash marks of a 2 on 1. None of them have earned the priviledge of being allowed any discretion whatsoever. All three of these players' 2 on 1 passing instincts flat out suck.

Nashville is patient with its prospects, especially goalies. They'll give him every opportunity to show he can't play (be consistent) before cutting him loose, just like they did with another goalie they took in the first round, Brian Finley (sixth overall, 1999).

I personally am a big believer losing the Hamilton/Montreal affiliations really hurts. Anything associated with them seems committed with winning at all levels. Between having that and the Pittsburgh affiliates, Wheeling certainly has the connections we lack. I can't help but think unless Wheeling really chokes they have the ability to go very deep into the playoffs, if not all the way.

The big debate for Cyclones fans is what to do when the season ends. This team will have a lot of decisions to make, and it will make for an interesting, full of debate, hot topic. I'm sure we will see a thread on that.

I can say that right now I'm not interested in any sort of season ticket package for next year. It's not a matter of being a fair weather fan, it's a matter of 60% of the home performances being embarrassingly awful.
It's just no fun to watch, and I'd honestly rather just do something else.

While I feel the goaltending has been sub-standard (compared to what we have seen in the past) our defense is letting these opportunities arise.

Wheeling's second goal with five seconds left was a backbreaker. A guy sitting at the far post without a defender anywhere close isn't the goalies' fault. Letting the opposition in shooting lanes unopposed is a problem.

Once again I know our defenders can defend. I have watched them do it (like all last year, and occasionally this year). In all the games I've watched I still can't figure out our defensive system. Wheeling is a talented team but our defensive system lets them shine.

Couple a porous defense in with lukewarm goaltending and well, here we are. Maybe we'll get hot down the stretch.

@ Randy, I am not just blaming Pickard. I know this team has allot of things that are factors in them losing games. Watching a goalie for the 4th time give up 5-6 goals a game is very frustrating. Not to mention knowing that we are stuck with him. Considering our assistant coach was a goalie you would think our goalies would be showing a little more promise this far in to the season.

@ Cloneinator, I completely agree that us loosing the Montreal/Hamilton affiliation has hurt us tremendously. Wheelings goalie Delmas is from the Montreal/Hamilton affiliation. Enuf said!

I knew that this season would be a challenging one with all of the coaching changes. I will always be a Cyclones fan and I will continue to support our boys through it all. I really hope that they get "hot" down the stretch. However, I think we are in for more the the same. I really strongly believe that we are in need of some coaching changes.

GO CYCLONES!!

I'm sure you are not alone and would not disagree with things as tight as they are money wise. I have the 2/3 package myself but I will re-evaluate after the season if I would maintain it or downgrade to the 1/3.

For my two cents worth (and I no doubt will draw a lot of criticism), the search should have started immediately after the season last year for a new coach. If it was in the cards, promote Dean (Stork) right away or find someone when there were good, quality candidates available. Offer Chuck a contract (as I am sure they did), and if he did not accept it, move on. I understand the want and desire to keep him, but he never made a secret about his ambitions and he deserved the shot he got. By waiting, we find ourselves in the mess we are in.

Yes I do remember they were in the same position after the 2008 championship, but he was still not a proven commodity. I can't believe anyone realistically thought he would not be picked up after 2010. I think the only surprise is it took so long.

I personally can't believe there is a better ownership group in the league, and quality candidates would kill at the opportunity to work for this organization. They have proven they will do what it takes to win.

...Just my two cents worth...

They still scored goals on us after Pickard was pulled. So blaming only Pickard is just dumb.

Chevy only gave up one goal after he came in, but still I agree this loss is not entirely on the back of Pickard.

On the topic of what to do next year--lets remember this is the ECHL and the Cyclones are not the Reds or Bengals. There is no one on this team who is signed for next year or beyond. We don't have multi year contracts. Supposedly each year the best players we get are from the Nashville and Florida organizations. These organizations will determine who they want to send here and by definition those will be among the "best players" we get. The other source is free agency but these are the players who could not get an AHL contract to start with. There is no long-term building strategy and you can't develop players like the Reds did. As much as I am disappointed in this year's product, I love the game and will be back next year to see what cards we are dealt. Each year we are dealt a new hand.

This years team is not as talented as what we have become use to-especially in goal. Neither is athletic enough to really move on. I was trying to remember last night when I saw one of them make a really great save. There is a big difference between blocking shots and making saves. You can teach technique but you cant teach athleticism. They get in the right position to block shots but neither then expands that coverage to make saves.

While we are not as talented as the past few years, I am most disappointed with the seeming lack of effort. Seen them give up too often. I remember in the first Kelly Cup year asking Chuck about their record when giving up the first goal. It is standard hockey lore that you will lose more than half the games when you do, yet the team had won something like 13 of the first 16 games when it gave up the first goal. His answer was that that team not only never gives up, it never thinks it is going to lose. Last night after giving up the late first period goal and the fluke third goal you could see the life go out of the team. They were toast and it showed with two more goals against them in two minutes. Their talent isn't great but they are not even playing up to that level. Is it the coaching? Is it the vets who are tired of toiling in this league? Don't know but hope we all renew tickets if we can for next year and hope the deck is stronger.

I'm not sure what happened with Chet, but it's almost guaranteed that if a 1st round pick has numbers like he has in the ECHL, their career is pretty much toast.

It can be frustrating to watch as a fan, but I feel bad for him. He's certainly not giving them up on purpose.

As far as next year's season tickets, for me, it'll depend on how the team finishes this year and what happens in the offseason. I need to see changes in order to be willing to write that check again next year. Like I said earlier, I'm just not enjoying this brand of hockey. It's not about wins and losses, it's about the product on the ice.
If there aren't changes, I'll just do the individual game thing when I have nothing better to do next year.
