I said at the beginning of the season the team had too many players back that had been with the team for two or more years and won a Kelly Cup (or two) and knowing this is as far as they're going to go, they weren't going to be as motivated. They're not as young as they were when they first came here, and they're not as hungry. Skalde inherited a roster that for the most part had been-there, done-that, got the t-shirt.

I don't buy that theory and never have.

Professional athletes are almost always highly competitive individuals, and that type of individual simply HATES TO LOSE. I'm that kind of person, always have been. It doesn't matter how many times I win or how many trophies I have, I want MORE.
I HATE TO LOSE. I hate to lose more than I enjoy winning.
I'd doubt anyone on the Cyclones bench is different than me.

Is it Pickard's fault? Some of it, but Cheverie is getting lit up tonight and Wheeling doesn't even have 3 full foward lines on the bench. Thats pretty sad.

Is it Skalde? Some of it, but not all of it. But as the coach it's his JOB to figure out what will owrk with what he has. It'll always be that way at this level. An ECHL coach never completely controls his personnel, especially with 2 affiliations.
If he can't adjust to the cards he's dealt, he might as well quit now. Thats the game.

Is it the veterans? Some of it. These guys can play better than they are playing.

There is some dysfunction with this team and even if the coach isn't the problem if he can't fix it he IS THE PROBLEM.

Look at what happened with the Cowboys this year by doing nothing but firing the coach. The Devils seem to have also gone from being the clones of the NHL to playing good hockey as well.

Just sayin'.

Nobody likes to lose but there does come a time when an athlete no longer wants to do what it takes to win. They're no longer willing to take the hit to make a play, sacrifice their body to block a shot, things like that. And this happens a lot faster for athletes that are playing at a level where they're not making any money.

Every once in a great while, even the blindest of squirrels finds an acorn. Congratulations. Don't press your luck.

@dbc. Your analysis of the goaltending is spot on. While I won't relegate Cheverie to permanent ECHL status yet (he's only a rookie and the defense has been lax at times), he's certainly not been a stellar performer.

Pickard is about as bad Gajewski was and will be on the roster much longer than "juice" was and will ultimately cause far more damage than "juice" was allowed to cause. At this point, Pickard has played about the same amount of minutes as "juice" did during his tenure here. But, Pickard's horror show has two more months to run. He's a season killer. And there's nothing that Skalde can do about it. Chuck would have been screwed as well. Dumping the undrafted, organizationally-insignificant "juice" isn't comparable to being able to toss a failing first round pick in only his second season into the ash heap. Any comparison between the two is apples and orangutans.

Who on this team has much upside potential? The only likely future non short term AHLers whom I see on the current Cyclone roster are Comrie and Minella. Also, no reason why Olson can't find a spot given that lesser fighters Bonneau and Johnson have. But he's strictly an enforcer. Perhaps O'Hanley has an outside shot as well.

Last season's team had a healthy Pierce and Robinson. Both of whom (healthy) may have AHL potential. From last season's team: Lacroix, Motherwell, Jozsa (retired now but had a lot of AHL time), Cashman, Jeremy Smith and Van Guilder are all playing in the AHL or an equivalent league. Kilpatrick is as good as any scorer on our roster (he's in the ECHL with Greenville).

I won't even make comparisons with KC Championship Team #1

Face it, this team is very average. The at best average (Cheverie) and dreadful (Pickard) goaltending make this team below average. It's barely a playoff caliber team. The same that it would have been under Weber. Jarrod Skalde is doing the best that he can with what he has.

He ain't the problem.

It seems we might be spoiled to great hockey, but then looking back I see so many instances of our defense letting down our goalie as he has let them down. I can not count the number of times they have left his backside completely exposed. Then to make matters worse thier passing has lost so much it is as if they are actually passing the puck to the other team on purpose, infact doing so that are goalie does not have a chance to even catch his breath before being blasted again. I only hope to see them at least pick up thier play as a team , because if they don't that is how they will loose , is as a team. Win or loose , even as much as it breaks my heart to see them loose, I will continue to come to watch in hopes of a better day. I too grew up in BAMA.

War Eagle or Roll Tide?

It's always one or the other. There is no other option.

I'm from Birmingham, so I grew up watching the Bulls. Sometimes a hockey game would break out in the middle of the fights.

Have you been to Alabama?
They stop you at the state line and make you declare a Auburn or Alabama allegiance. A few years ago there was discussion of an NFL expansion team in Birmingham and the answer was "No thanks, we're fine."

As far as Hockey, Birmingham is ALOT like Cincinnati. There is a small group of folks that are die-hard hockey fans and religious Bulls supporters (and like the Cyclones the Bulls have been on and off in different leagues over the years). But college football is king and nothing else comes remotely close. High school football probably comes in 2nd (I'm not kidding).

Why is the SEC so good in football?
The same reason the ACC is so good in Basketball and hockey is so good in Canada and the US border states... It's a religion.

I'd venture that I've been in Alabama more times in the past year than you lol.

Yes, I know it's a football state, but this is a hockey board and when it comes to college hockey in the south there is only one...

I wish UAH had been there when I lived there. There was no hockey in the state for a very long time.

I do remember watching guys like Ramage and Vaive when I was a kid though. Given that I grew up in Birmingham its amazing I saw any hockey at all.
I think we also had Dave Hanson for a while.
The team folded when I was like 12 or 13, then came back in the 90s as an ECHL team but I was in Atlanta by then.

Ain't that the truth! Both the WHA Bulls and Stingers were the only teams to not be admitted to the NHL during the merger.

Earlier you mentioned that the NFL had considered a Birmingham expansion team, doesn't Birmingham have a UFL team? Do people go at all?
