CINCINNATI, Ohio - Toledo's Willie Coetzee banged in the game-winning goal midway through the third period to lift the Toledo Walleye (31-30-4-2) over the Cincinnati Cyclones (31-27-6-4) by a 3-2 final score in front of 4,756 at U.S. Bank Arena on Friday night.
Thanks to an early power play, Toledo jumped out 1-0 as Evan Rankin deflected home Jason Lepine's point shot past Cyclones goalie Brian Foster (L, 18 saves, 9-5-0-1) just 1:43 into the opening frame. Then, during a Cyclones power play, Garrett Suter lost an edge at the Toledo blue line and allowed Andy Bombach to break away all alone on Foster. While Foster made the first save, Bombach poked in the rebound at the 17:14 mark to extend the Walleye lead to 2-0 at the end of one period.
In the second period, Cincinnati cashed in on a power play of its own as Barret Ehgoetz fed a tape-to-tape pass to Dustin Sproat in the slot, who roofed a shot past Toledo netminder Thomas McCollum (W, 27 saves, 10-8-1-1) to pull within a goal. About eight minutes later, at the 16:08 mark, Garrett Suter blasted in his first professional goal from just inside the right point to knot the score at two after 40 minutes of play.
Despite several Cyclones chances early in the third stanza, Toledo cashed in the go-ahead (and eventual game-winning) goal at the 11:12 mark when Willie Coetzee slammed in a rebound left along the goal line to push the Walleye ahead for good, 3-2. They would hold on to win by the same score.
The Cyclones Radio Network Three Stars of the Game are as follows: 1. Andy Bombach (1 goal, 2 assists for Toledo) 2. Willie Coetzee (Game winning goal for Toledo) 3. Garrett Suter (First career professional goal)
The defending Kelly Cup Champions will return to U.S. Bank Arena tomorrow night when they once again battle the Walleye at 7:30pm. Tomorrow is Child Abuse Awareness Night when the first 2,500 fans in attendance will receive a FREE Reminderband as they walk through the gates. In addition, the Cyclones will wear special-edition jerseys that will be auctioned off after the game to benefit the Northern Kentucky Children's Advocacy Center. 2010-11 single game and discounted group tickets are available now. 2011-12 season tickets are on sale NOW! The first period was disgracefully bad.
And Suter being one of the stars solidifies that the exercise has become a joke. That's one of the worst games I've ever seen a defenseman play, but he got a flukey goal.
That might be the first shorthanded 2 on 0 I've ever seen too.
Awful.

Same old story for home games against Toledo,Kalamazoo or Wheeling: 1st period= Don't show up or hard play and no scoring 2nd period= Play hard and get right back in the game 3rd period= Play no offense and either let the lead slip away or seem content to play for overtime. Sorry guys-this was a game we couldn't afford to go away with no points. |

| What a lackluster effort. I was hoping the boys would play fired up, and win since they have been gone for 3 weeks. Hope we get them tomorrow. |

| It's the story of the whole season. Pi$$ poor performance against their own division. If a team can't win against ANYONE in their own division, they don't deserve to make the playoffs. And with Toledo and K-Zoo all thats left on the schedule, if they make it will be because they back in. |

At least Toledo didn't have their best offensive player.

Guess I watched a different game. Thought the effort was there but inability to play against a forechecking team continues. We had two defensemen fall down leading to two goals-one indirectly on a power play and one on the two on none breakaway. Thought the defense played OK except for those spills holding them well below their game average in shots.
The problem all year had been the offense. Lots of effort but no real highly skilled offensive players. The leading goal scorers with one week left are Sprout, Aubin, and Sprout all of whom have only about 20 goals each and Barret and Dustin would rather pass than shoot. In the last five games we have scored SEVEN goals (not counting empty nets)with no games scoring more than 2 goals. We are still four points ahead and need to find some way to finish plays. We are in a five game playoff and are down 1-0 |

Those three have been around long enough to realize that there are no pure scores on this team. They need to step up, and SHOOT the puck! |

The 1st period was so abysmal the guy sitting behind me said at one point "This is my first hockey game but even I know this is pretty bad." Lots of standing around, no physicality (except Liambas... Again), and passing up scoring chances to make cutesy passes (again). At least they woke up in the 2nd and started playing harder, but spotting the opponent a couple of goals in the first (again) is typically a recipe for a loss (again).

And to me that translates to a pi$$ poor performance.
This team may be up by four points with five to go, but all five are against Toledo and K-Zoo, teams we can't beat (yeah we won 1-0 against K-Zoo thanks to a lights out performance by Foster). |

Mike Hedden was sent down from Grand Rapids today, should be in Cincy in time for tonight's game.

Getting stomped 3-0 in the 2nd.
I'm going to accentuate the positive and think of all the beer I can buy with the money we save on not buying playoff tickets.
