Desharnais becomes only the 3rd player in history to play his first NHL game after leading the ECHL in scoring. Bill McDougall was the ECHL's top scorer in 1989-90 and went on to play 28 games over 3 seasons in the NHL with Detroit, Edmonton and Tampa Bay. Stan Drulia was the top point getter in the ECHL in 1990-91, and went on to play 126 games in 3 seasons with Tampa Bay.

Two other players (Ed Courtenay and Scott Gomez) led the ECHL in scoring after having previous NHL experience. Coincidentally, Gomez' injury was one of 8 Habs injuries that necessitated Desharnais' promotion.

Desharnais had 7:55 of playing time on 12 shifts in his debut.

He won 2 of 4 face offs and registered one hit.

He was -1. He got a little toasted by Gonchar on this one.

The goal at 16:56 of the second period is the one where you can see DD. He's number 58.

Congrats to David! My favorite opposing player ever. Always enjoyed watching him play against the Nailers, even as he torched us. He was a threat to make a play every time he was on the ice, and it's great to see him getting a shot in The Show.

I always viewed Desharnais as a bit more talented version of Sean Collins. These two players were definitely my most favorite players to watch in the years in which they played in the E.

You Wheeling fans are used to seeing your guys get the call to the show, but it's pretty new and exciting for Cyclone fans.

Will you be at either the Sat or Sun game??

David Desharnais became the latest AHL player to make his NHL debut this season. He arrived here by limousine from Hamilton yesterday and had a decent debut. He played nearly eight minutes, won two of four draws, had a hit and was minus-1.

I was a little nervous at first but I settled down, said Desharnais, a 5-foot-7 sniper who started last season in the ECHL. I played in exhibition games, but this was different tonight. I knew it was going to be faster, but when you see guys like Sidney Crosby and (Evgeni) Malkin. But this game gives me confidence I can play at this level.

On the Canadiens message board which I visit, the posters who commented on DD mentioned that he played on "the worst line in the NHL" when paired with Wyman and Chipchura. He had 4th line exposure in his first NHL game which was a good way to get his feet wet. He also was saddled with pretty weak linemates and I'm sure that Martin and Gainey didn't expect much from him.

I hope he is given time to show his stuff and that he isn't tentative like he was on his first call up to the AHL during his MVP season.

In any case, he's now officially an NHL veteran (of one game, I know!) and he's on the radar of other NHL scouts. He just turned 23 and has overcome numerous obstacles (size, not drafted) to get to the NHL. Just think, two years ago his next game would be at USBA vs. Kzoo and listening to my taunts and instead he's (let's hope) going to be playing at the Bell Center in Montreal.

Allez DD!!

It's too bad hrc had to bring everyone down on this joyous occasion, telling us how DD is one of the worst 3 players in the NHL. Next thing you know, he'll be letting us know that DD is on pace for zero points in his NHL career. Why is it important that we are reminded that this is the worst line in the NHL? An excuse for no points and a minus-1? Who cares? The guy got a 6 hour limo ride to get a cup of coffee for the greatest franchise in NHL history, and won 2 faceoffs. Congratulations to him.

But it's good to know he didn't disappoint. Martin and Gainey didn't expect much from him, and he met their expectations. Just curious, which scouts have told you he is on their radar?

I'd say the Weber era will produce several more NHL players. It will be old hat for you guys soon enough. It's extra special to see Desharnais make it, seeing how he was overlooked because of that always important height statistic.

I'll be in Wheeling Saturday for sure. Sunday's attendance will be based on how bad we look. I thought they were turning it around some, and then they crapped all over themselves last night. WBS is gonna take at least one or two from us for the weekend too.

C'mon Hockey Traveller, you know the cell phones of general managers throughout the NHL were going off last night from scouts at the game in Pittsburgh after he wowed them by going scoreless on no shots, posting a minus-1 rating, and accruing no takeaways during his 7:55 minutes of ice time. Pedestrian-like performances like that put him on everyone's radar last night. NHL organizations are kicking themselves for not drafting him when they had the chance.

LOL, because everyone scores a hat trick, goes +6, and has 10 shots on goal in their first game.

Great to see former Cyclones called up but the only reason Desharnais and Wyman were called up to Montreal was because of injuries.

Montreal has six forwards that are out of the lineup right now -- five due to injury -- and one that's suspended. They also have two defensemen out with injuries.

The only other alternative the Canadiens had to field a team besides calling up Desharnais and Wyman was to bring Guy Lafleur and Steve Shutt out of retirement.

Although it's not hockey but in the mid 80's the Texas Rangers had
injuries to their catchers. At the time the triple AAA catchers were
also hurt so they turned to the Double AA catcher- Ivan Rodriguez.
He never went back !! DD most likely will return to Hamilton but no
reason to think he won't be back in the future for his skills, not
just to fill a roster slot.
