regardless of why he made it to mtl, he made it; something that certain people said would never happen based on watching a few games he played in the ahl back in 06-07 after his junior career was over.

lets take a look at the score sheet: no points=no big deal, lots of guys don't register points every night. no takeaways=who cares, i notice you failed to mention that he had no GIVEAWAYS donnie and if i recall, you said that was something that would plague his hockey career based on the handful of games you saw him play in during the aforementioned few games in 06-07. he was 50% in the face-off circle, that's something that a lot of centers would love to be able to say. he was a -1, that -1 came against the crosby line. are you suggesting that every player that is on the ice when crosby, gonchar, staal hook up should be sent to the minors?

david is young and he probably won't be a regular in the mtl lineup at this point, but based on his first game, he's proven he's not a liability. david's work ethic is outstanding, something that a player of his size needs to be to succeed in the nhl. there is no reason to think that with his work ethic and skating ability he won't someday be a third line guy in the nhl, perhaps even a second liner at times. the most important thing to come from the game is it gave david a taste of the nhl game and the confidence that he can compete at that level.

The kid had 10 points in 7 games this year.

His 58 points last season would have placed in first (or tied) in scoring on 11 (of 29) AHL teams.

He proved himself more than capable at the AHL level and his time was going to come in the NHL. One doesn't have the skill to lead almost half the teams in a league in scoring in his rookie year and not ultimately get a look from the next level.

Years from now he can tell people sitting around the bar in Chicoutimi he played as long in the NHL as former WHA Stinger Gene Sobchuk.

He never went back !! DD most likely will return to Hamilton but no
reason to think he won't be back in the future for his skills, not
just to fill a roster slot.

Ivan Rodriquez was one of the top prospects in baseball when the Texas Rangers called him up. He was expected to make it to the Major Leagues and have a standout career.

I'm sure DD took in everything he experienced and will be able to use that to his advantage in his development as a player.

He's had a taste of the big time and will have to again ply his trade in the AHL before his next recall. This is the rule for most players; their first promotion to the NHL is most often not their last.

The NHL is an exclusive club. David Desharnais will always be able to say that he was a member of that club no matter what the future holds. Most who aspire to the NHL in any capacity never get there. And it is a quite bitter pill for some of them to swallow. DD will never have to contend with that frustration.

Ten years from now we'll see if he went on to become an NHL player or if he ended up being what he was projected to be as a career minor leaguer. Don't be surprised if the bulk of his professional career is spent playing in Europe. He could make some good money there.

Europe is a possibility for many non-NHL players.

Desharnais is 23 and isn't even close to being thrown into the category of "career minor leaguer". His story is in its initial stages and the chapters to be written could very easily include a long term NHL tenure.

In separate and unrelated news, the Dayton Gems are looking for a media relations director. Anyone with previous media relations experience in minor league hockey is urged to call (937) 275-7777 if interested.

Thanks. I'll let Joe Kelley, Aaron Roof and Gregg DeVitto know.

Minor league games = 164
NHL games = 1

I'd say he's closer to career minor leaguer than long term NHLer.

When Don Biggs was 23, he was leading the Hershey Bears in scoring with 103 points, and came back with a 92 point season the next year. At 24, he finally got the call to Philadelphia, and appeared in 11 games with the Flyers that year, scoring 2 goals. Biggs never played in another NHL game despite going on to lead the AHL one season with 138 points, and averaging 87 points over 12 consecutive seasons in the AHL and IHL.

Are you kidding with that one! David has only started his career, not
on the last leg. If he was 34 and that was his playing stats you can
call him a "career minor leaguer"! I will agree that the pattern of
the NHL is anyone spending more than two seasons in the minors seems
to have only a 20% chance of a long NHL career. If David spends more
than half the year of 2011-12 in the minors, you can start to think
career minor leaguer.

Very good and accurate analysis of "career minor leaguer", bags.

The Biggs analogy was so rife with logical and situational flaws that I didn't feel like spending the 15 minutes necessary to blow it apart.

The Schlockey Babbler's logic is, well, illogical.

Desharnais tidbit:

When DD donned number 58 in his Candiens debut Wednesday, it marked the first time in the 101 year history of Les Habitants that 58 had been worn.

There are now only 9 numbers which have never been worn by Canadien players. I don't know what they are

Nice note on Desharnais.

More players have worn #20 than any other in Montreal Canadiens history with 55 different players taking the ice in a regular season game wearing that sweater number.
