Make sure you check it out on HNIC on CBC (or NHL Network)! He should be in the lineup tonight.

David Desharnais spent the game eating popcorn in the press box as a healthy scratch. At least he had a great view of the game.

Montreal has enough smurfs with the likes of Brian Gionta (5-7), Mike Cammalleri (5-9) and Scott Gomez (listed at 5-11 but plays like he's 4-11) and are looking for someone that brings some much-needed size to its lineup, which has led to them calling up Desharnais linemate in Hamilton, left wing Max Pacioretty.

The AHL's player of the month for November, Pacioretty has 17 goals and 15 assists in 27 AHL games this season and deserved another chance to show the Canadiens why they took him in the first round, 22nd overall, in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft after failing to produce in his previous two opportunities in 2008-09 and 2009-10.

Pacioretty, who was recalled from Hamilton Sunday, gave Desharnais a glowing recommendation yesterday after his first practice with the Canadiens. Pacioretty said Desharnais was a major reason why he has scored 17 goals with the Hamilton Bulldogs this season.

"He's the best player I've ever played with," Pacioretty said.

And yet despite that ringing endorsement from a Canadiens' first-round pick disappointment, Desharnais remains in the AHL in Hamilton.

For the time being.

He will get his legitimate NHL shot. Good chance it may not be in Montreal given their contract commitments at center. With Plekanic, Cammalleri and Gomez all signed to long term and expensive deals, DD won't get a legitimate shot (injuries notwithstanding)in Montreal. He needs a good 15-20 game trial as a second line center to be properly evaluated. Given his creativity (which everyone apparently recognizes) and how hard goals are to come by for so many NHL teams, DD will probably get his shot next season in a different organization-unless he's traded this season.

It's nice to have been right about Desharnais. I always knew that he was AHL capable-though I probably underestimated his impact at that level.

It amazes me that others couldn't see that. lol

While it is clearly apparent you are in love with David Desharnais, the reality of the sitaution is there are 30 NHL teams that are not. If he could help an NHL team as a second line center, that team would make a trade for him (and they'd have to give up nothing but another minor league player that Montreal might like to get him or a late round draft pick).

When he's still not a regular in the NHL next season -- his fifth year as a pro -- then maybe it will dawn on you he's nothing more than what he was projected to be: Career minor leaguer. As most non-drafted, undersized players out of the QMJHL are.

He'll get his shot.

You've downplayed this kid's ability from day 1 (along with Desjardins) and have been proven wrong. You claimed neither would be regulars in the AHL; not only have they become regulars, they've both been stars. You've said neither would ever make the NHL and they both have. You predicted Matthieu Aubin and James Sixsmith as NHLers. Your track record regarding projections of where players will progress (or not progress) is astoundingly poor. Perhaps you should follow the old adage of "it is better to be thought a fool, then to open one's mouth and remove all doubt" when it comes to assessing player's talents.

As Tracy Jones likes to say: "You never played the game". It shows in your analysis. lol

"The only way David Desharnais will see an NHL game is if he buys a ticket".

"David Desharnais will be invisible during 5 on 5 hockey. IN THE AHL"

Guys like Chris Kunitz and Zenon Konopka made it to the NHL. Desharnais played in six NHL games, and only because Montreal had a depleted lineup. There is a big difference between making it to the NHL and playing in the NHL. Desharnais falls in the latter category.

If the day ever comes where Desharnais plays regularly in the NHL, then you can yap all you want about how wrong I was. Right now, he's in his fourth season in the minor leagues, enough time where the projection of career minor leaguer begins to become a reality.

Desjardins is in the NHL only because of an injury to Mike Smith. If you were to look back at my comments on Desjardins, you'd find posts where I said he might be like former Cincinnati Mighty Ducks goalie Chris Mason, someone that plays five or six years in the minor leagues before he gets a chance to play in the NHL. I'm tracking well with what I said about him a few years ago.

Spoke to the man in charge of the Montreal roster before Thursday night's game and asked them about Desharnais. They said he was "highly skilled but small" and that there were no plans to call him up "unless we have to."

As WLW's Tracy Jones would say, it is what it is.

The way the Canadiens are going they may have a new man in charge of the roster in very short order. lol
