quote: 1. Benoit Pouliot looks like a man renewed.
It's amazing what a difference a good center can make to a winger's play on the ice. It's also amazing what a couple of goals can do for a goal-scorers confidence.
Since playing with David Desharnais as his center, Benoit Pouliot looks every bit the player that scored 15 goals in 39 games with Montreal last season.
After scoring a regulation goal and the game-winning shootout goal on a sweet stick drag, Pouliot is once again playing with confidence. It is no coincidence that his revival came at the same time as he was placed with the hottest player in the AHL this seasonDesharnais.
Desharnais' speed and grittiness allowed Pouliot to get open in prime scoring position for excellent one-timer shots. Combined with Mathieu Darche's never-quit attitude and nose for the net, these three formed an excellent trio.
The renewed production from Pouliot allowed Coach Martin to switch up his lines in the third period, reuniting Hamilton's dynamic duo of Desharnais and Pacioretty (with Gionta) and moving Gomez to center with Darche and Pouliot.

To gather the personal possessions he left behind and tie up loose ends. No doubt about that. Good call.

Hopefully he plays well enough to stick. That would be great. It would prove that I, along with the scouting departments of all 30 NHL teams, was wrong about him.
I saw Desharnais play twice for Bridgeport at the end of the 2006-07 season, and he couldn't keep up with the play. He was easily pushed off the puck and was overmatched. Carolina had considered bringing him in for a look (with Albany) before Bridgeport did, but its QMJHL scout said he was too small and wouldn't be able to play in five-on-five situations and recommended another undrafted player that was also on the small side, Danick Bouchard (after one game it was clear Bouchard couldn't play in the league and he was a healthy scratch the final few games of the season). I didn't see Desharnais play much in the ECHL, but when I did I thought he had great hands and vision, but based on what I (and yes, others) had seen of him in the AHL with Bridgeport, he wasn't someone to get excited about.
I called the game when he scored his first pro goal for Bridgeport --a power-play tally from along the goal line to the left of the net. If memory serves, he wore #42 for the Sound Tigers.
BTW ... the Soung Tigers had him for seven games at the end of the 2006-07 season and based on what they saw in those games, they weren't interested in inviting the guy to their 2007 training camp. It wasn't only me, Joe, that didn't think he could play although you like to try and paint that picture. |

| Desharnais was minus-1 and was given just 8:46 minutes of ice time in Montreal's 2-1 win over the New York Rangers tonight. He won just one of the five faceoffs he took. |

Isn't the main goal a win ? If he was plus 2 and they lost, you would blame him for the loss. Instead they win and all you can point out is that he was on the ice when they scored their only goal. |

Great to see he scored a goal but what the Canadiens coaching staff and GM Pierre Gauthier are going to evaluate him on tonight was his play away from the puck and in the defensive zone, how many battles he won/lost for the puck along the wall, and how he did in the faceoff circle. From what I could tell watching the game on TV, he was pretty good in all those areas which matters more to the coaches than the goal he scored.

Outstanding stuff!!!!!!!!
I can only imagine how good it felt to him to score it at home in front of all his fellow Quebecois. Probably better than an ECHL MVP award.
What people will notice about DD is how he is always a part of the offensive flow whether he has the puck or not. He is a gifted offensive talent. He is also a tremendously hard-working player in all facets of the game. Anyone who saw him play as a Cyclone can attest to that.
I'll say that when he is placed in his proper role as a 2nd line center (with wingers who can take full advantage of his superior passing) and with ample power play time, he'll be a 50+ point producer. Probably not with the Canadiens who have the center position locked up with long term contracted players (Gomez, Plekanec, and Cammellari). I believe that DD is an Unrestricted Free Agent after this season. If so, he would be free to sign wherever he wanted without any compensation due Montreal.
Regardless of the what the future holds, it's spectacular to see this kid realizing his goal of being an NHL player. It would have been a major miscarriage of hockey justice for DD to have not outscored Greg Stewart in the NHL. |

| DD needs one more goal to move past 11 NHL goaltenders on the all-time career goal-scoring list, including Martin Brodeur and Ron Hextall (in addition to their regular-season goals, they also scored a goal in the Stanley Cup playoffs). |
