Troy has a team in the AAHL that plays in Hobart they are called the Bruins. I think the Storm are done, and won't be appearing in a Dayton suburb anytime soon. That would give Dayton 3 hockey teams. |

I agree with HRC that there aren't any superstar goal scorers on this team. Didn't have that last year either, and it didn't keep us from winning the whole thing.
I post the following not to infuriate, but just to state my point of view.
It's been said that it's best to "not succeed the legend". And Weber had legendary status among the faithful. I think Stork is very fortunate that things shook out the way they did and he was able to begin his head coaching career elsewhere.
Skalde inherited the core of a team that won a Championship that they wouldn't win 1 in 20 times if they had to do it all over again.
This is not to denigrate the grand accomplishment of winning the Kelly Cup by last year's squad. The simple fact is that last year's team would have lost the first round vs. SC if it weren't for a lucky carom off the crossbar that didn't go in. The Cyclones were outplayed in all five of the first five games vs. Charlotte and only survived that round because Jeremy Smith stood on his head.
Then came Reading. Down 0-3, the only way the Cyclones could have won was if Reading completely imploded. Which they did (and I was glad for it). Reading came completely unglued and took a season's worth of stupid penalties in games 4 and 5. Their rookie coach, Larry Courville, looked completely lost on the bench in games 6 & 7-which was almost certainly mirrored in his behind-the-scenes stewardship of the Royals.
My overall point is that looking at the 2010-11 Cyclones as a defending Championship team which was likely to repeat isn't probably a very realistic view of the team. I think a lot of people believe that this team and last season's team are/were much more talented than they actually are/were. As such, the expectations for this team and Skalde are pretty unrealistic-at least from my way of looking at things.
My expectation is that the team will either very quickly emerge from their recent doldrums or some very familiar faces will soon be missing from the roster.
And deservedly so. I'd cut two fan favorites yesterday if I were running the show.

I understand your point HRC, but the fact of the matter is last years team was much better than sub .500, this one is not. Last years team showed resiliency, this one can't get out of its own way. You never really felt last years team was out of the game, you never feel this years team can hold a lead...if it gets one. Last years team had confidence between the players and coaches, this years team shows no sign of that at all. There are tons of other differences between last years team and this years everyone on this board can point out...its comparing apples to oranges. If this team makes the playoffs...and that is a HUGE if...its going to be because our division sucks so bad it would be the best of the worst.
I'm certainly not knocking your post...quite the contrary I appreciate the "Glass half full" mentality. I love this team as much as anyone, but the reality is its probably as good as it is going to get this year, and that ain't good. |
...And on the eighth day, GOD created the Cyclones! |

Now that the Queen City Storm have folded, how about firing Scott Fankhouser and replacing him with Dwayne Zinger.
The Storm folded?
No info on their website or the AAHL website.

As this league goes, cancelled games before folding is announced. |

I totally agree that last years cup was a feat bordering on miraculous, and a repeat was unlikely. I never said anything to the contrary.
BUT, last years team didn't spend the season wandering aimlessly at the middle of a terrible division. Last year's team could win home games. Last years team did not look lost more often than focused. Last year's team could kill a penalty.
This years team can't. It's basically January now and I've still only seen two home wins, and one of those was against an awful Bakersfield. I've left the arena happy and hopeful exactly once... Gwinette. That hope was short lived.
In short, last year was not crappy, frustrating, boring hockey. This year... I'm getting to the point that I'd rather give away my ticket and go to a movie. And if you know me, that is HUGE.

| I have seen them win twice this year at home as well. Against Bakersfield, and Toledo in OT. The scoring chances seem to be there, but I can't for the life of me understand why they don't bury the puck in the net. The D is horrible, terrible, and lazy. They seem to stand there, and allow the other team to set up their offense, and get off good passes without stepping in the passing lanes, and allow good open looks for shots without getting in shooting lanes. Whenever we're on the pk I truly believe the other team will score. Hopefully something will be done. Someone needs to stand up in the locker room, and light a fire under the boys. |

| Just got off the phone with the Storm's owner, the game tonight is on. Some of the players have left town and they are trying to get ahold of them. Also, Dwayne Zinger is going to dress for the game, whether he plays or not is depending on if the players are back in time. The equipment is on its way back to the rink. |

... but do they have anyone to play against? I'd assume the Troy management would just be done with the situation after the games were postponed. |

He said the Troy team is on their way down for the game. This is what I was told just 15 minutes ago. Not sure about Sunday's game. Looks like the new owner of SportsPlus is giving them 1 game to prove they can draw a crowd.
If you click on the link I provided earlier, that link says message not found. But if you go to the Storm's website it says game on.

Oh gees. They're given a New Year's Eve slot to prove their draw? Why not "postpone" tonight's game, and give them Sunday so they can get the word out?
I hope I'm wrong, but this reeks of a 'last hurrah'. I hope Coach Zinger and the players land on their feet after this and at least go out with a bang. I enjoyed what I saw of the play, but can't say that I enjoyed the baggage that came with it. |

Yes it does reek as a last hurrah, but worthy of a try. |

I really don't mean to be all doom & gloom. I wish I could be there tonight. I hope the draw is decent and the goal horn nice and loud.

Thanks. If you know of anybody looking for something to do tonight, please pass this on. |

Everyone has made some very good points regarding the team. The bottom line is that we all love the team and want very badly for them to succeed. As frustrated as I get, I do have fun going to the arena and watching a game. Maybe not as much fun as the last two years, but still fun.
Heres the problem for me though, do I get season tickets next year, or wait and pick and choose some games based on what changes are made. I think I can relate to Catch22 very well in the fact that I can handle a loss, its part of it, but I dont feel the same after a loss this year as I did maybe last year or the year before. Last year I definitely felt like "we'll get'em next time," this year I dont feel that. It is different this year.
